Aston Villa has lost another player this summer as midfielder Aleksandar Tonev has moved to Celtic on a loan with an option for the move to become permanent.

The problem with Tonev leaving Villa isn't so much that he was exceptional in his first season at Villa Park but rather than Villa are losing players from a poor squad and not doing much in the way of replacing/upgrading. Philippe Senderos, Joe Cole, Keiran Richardson and Aly Cissokho - Villa's incoming players thus far - reads more like rounding out the bench for a mid-table team than being headline acquisitions. Things are going to be rough for the Villains this season, especially if Benteke doesn't return to form, and quickly.

Crystal Palace Football Club can today confirm that Neil Warnock has been relieved of his duties and is no longer first-team manager.

And so we have out first Premier League managerial casualty of the season. Warnock joined Crystal Palace for a second time in August 2014, following the departure of Tony Pulis, but won just three of his 16 Premier League games in his second spell in charge, giving a win percentage of 18.8%. The 3-1 home defeat to Southampton put the Eagles in to the relegation zone and forced the club to act before things got any worse. Assistant manager Keith Millen will be in charge for the trip to Queens Park Rangers on Sunday but it is understood that Palace will begin their search for a permanent successor immediately. Tim Sherwood is one of the early favourites to take the role, with Pulis himself also mentioned, although the latter seems extremely unlikely.

Adnan Januzaj became the second United - and Belgium - player to be struck down with a virus which has affected a number of Manchester United squad members to varying degrees.

Januzaj joins Marouane Fellaini on the sidelines and the pair will miss Sundays' trip to White Hart Lane as they struggle to shake off the effects of the 'Belgium Virus'. Januzaj has fell down the pecking order this season following a number of new arrivals - Angel di Maria / Radamel Falcao / Daley Blind - and despite a host of injuries to key personnel the youngster has been restricted to just four starts this campaign only completing 90 minutes twice. Januzaj may look for a loan move in 2015 to help continue his development and gain some valuable game time / experimence with Newcastle reportedly interested.

Flying winger Jefferson Montero could miss the remainder of the Christmas schedule because of injury after limping out of the win over Aston Villa at the Liberty Stadium on Friday.

The Ecuadorian had just returned to the side having tweaked his hamstring last week and this latest setback - recurrence - will need a scan to confirm the extent of the strain. Even a grade one tear could mean at least two weeks on the sidelines and his recent problems could mean Garry Monk may not risk a hasty return. However the Swans should be able to welcome back Leon Britton against Liverpool – a knee injury has troubled him recently but the midfielder did train this week while Gylfi Sigurdsson showed no signs of the foot injury - which kept him out of GW17 - by scoring the winning goal with a superb free-kick. Wayne Routledge is on standby if Montero misses out.

Angel di Maria has suffered another injury – this time in training – making the Argentine winger a serious doubt for GW19.

Louis van Gaal confirmed di Maria has a pelvic problem which is being assessed having pulled out of the warm-up during a session on Christmas Eve – the player had just returned to the side following a hamstring problem and worryingly this latest setback is his sixth since signing in the summer. Di Maria is almost certain to miss the trip to Tottenham on Sunday while the United manager also confirmed Marouane Fellaini and Adnan Januzaj [Belgium Flu] are both out along with Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo – around two weeks. Luke Shaw is close and trained with the team during the post-match warm down at Old Trafford today.

Alexis Sanchez was all over the pitch winning a penalty, having it saved, scoring Arsenal's first and then assisting on their second in a 2-1 Boxing Day win over QPR.

It was a little bit of everything from Alexis Sanchez and Arsenal on Boxing Day. Sanchez was very good drawing a penalty, scoring a goal and getting an assist. On the down side, Giroud was sent off for a rash headbutt on Nedum Onuoha and Sanchez saw a weak penalty saved by Robert Green. Arsenal also conceded a late penalty that Charlie Austin scored to make the final ten minutes tense at the Emirates.

Charlie Austin was at it again with a goal from the penalty spot but QPR couldn't stage another big comeback as they lost their ninth consecutive away match at the Emirates 2-1 on Boxing Day.

It seemed unlikely that QPRs first road points of the season would come at the Emirates and they didn't but it was closer than expected after Olivier Giroud was sent off. Austin spent most of the first half as a make-shift defender warding off set pieces and corners in the QPR box. With Giroud off early in the second half, Austin and the Rs took a more attacking posture and were eventually rewarded with a penalty that Junior Hoilett drew from Mathieu Debuchy and Charlie Austin converted. The Rs pressed for the equalizer and had some solid chances and potential penalty claims but couldn't get the second.

Roberto Martinez will be sweating on the fitness of a number of players ahead of the clash with Newcastle at St James’ Park in GW19.

The Toffees came through a particularly bruising encounter against Stoke having lost the game one nil and up to four of today's starters because of injury. In the first half alone over ten minutes of extra time were played as Phil Jagielka and John Stones [both ankle], Tim Howard [calf] and Ross Barkley [nose] all received treatment while Ryan Shawcross was left with a bloodied and bandaged head. Kevin Mirallas was also the recipient of a heavy Charlie Adam challenge during the second half. Howard and Jagielka remain the biggest doubts with Joel Robles and Antolin Alcaraz the likely benefactors in what the manager bills as a "pivotal" game on Tyneside – Everton are currently 13 points behind last season’s total at the same stage.

Southampton defender Toby Alderweireld continued his hot fantasy form with a goal in the Saints' win over Crystal Palace.

Alderweireld makes it two consecutive weeks with double digit points despite not getting a clean sheet today. He is nailed on as a starter in Southampton and only costs £ 8.16M, making him an attractive options for fantasy managers in various formats. He can be used with confidence. Ryan Bertrand also scored today and is an even better fantasy option, but the price difference makes Bertrand hard to own unless you have him at a discount.

Leonardo Ulloa returned to Leicester's starting lineup with a goal.

Ulloa was impressive today and created danger in front of Tottenham's goal. He scored the Foxes' only goal of the day and did enough to warrant being started again in Leicester's next match. Ulloa has shown he can be streaky, but he just finished a long drought and a match away at Hull City is probably not the best matchup for a striker. Stay away for now but consider him if he earns another start and plays well at Hull.

Southampton got on the board early in the 17th minute and kept their foot on the gas, cruising to victory over Crystal Palace 3-1 on Boxing Day.

Sadio Mane got the Saints off to a great start, finishing a breakaway produced by a brilliant through ball from James Ward-Prowse. Mane and Ward-Prowse each assisted on the second and third goals. Palace finally got one back in the 86th minute off a set-piece header from Scott Dann, bringing some life to the home crowd, but that's about it. Saints were in control for most of the day. Palace play on the road vs QPR in two days and Southampton take on the league leaders (Chelsea) at home.

Diego Costa was back in top form today with a goal and an assist against West Ham United.

The Chelsea striker was a force from the start and was taken off with about ten minutes left to be presumably saved for Sunday's match against Southampton. Jose Mourinho stated earlier this week that no player will play in all three games over the holidays but with Costa being regularly pulled early, he may be risked for all matches. Check lineups before using him.
