Laurent Koscielny is targeting a return to action within six months following surgery to repair his ruptured Achilles tendon.

The Arsenal centre-back said he felt like he had been tackled by Diego Costa after falling to the turf during the opening minutes of the Europa League semi-final tie in Madrid earlier this month. But in the moments that followed, Koscielny suddenly realised he was all alone and his dreams of playing at the World Cup finals in Russia were over: "My first reaction was to say: 'It's done - my tendon has snapped.' I was screaming on the pitch. I remember hitting my hand on the ground several times. It was an atrocious pain. At that exact moment, I knew that it would be at least six months before I could play again." Former Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger said at the time: "You will not see him now before the beginning of December at least." But Koscielny is hoping to be back in the first-team by November.

Spurs fans will be relieved to see that manager Mauricio Pochettino has signed a new long-term contract.

Amid links this summer to Chelsea among other big-club vacancies, the Argentine manager signs on for five more years with Spurs after leading the club to back-to-back top-three finishes in the Premier League. Said Pochettino after the deal was announced: "I am honoured to have signed a new long-term contract as we approach one of the most significant periods in the Club's history and be the manager that will lead this team into our new world-class stadium. This is just one of the factors that makes this one of the most exciting jobs in world football and we are already making plans to ensure we continue to build on the great work that everyone has contributed to over the past four years."

Liverpool were handed a major boost on Thursday as both James Milner and Emre Can were deemed fit for the weekend.

The Reds will already be without starting midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and were preparing to go without Emre Can due to a back injury that has limited him since March and kept him out of the German national team for the World Cup. But manager Jurgen Klopp confirmed that Can and Milner have come through full training this week without a hitch and will now be available for selection against back-to-back Champions League winners Real Madrid in the final on Saturday night: Millie was clear [he would be fit] and Emre is a surprise. He told me he would come back, try this and that and then we would talk to people...Now he trains completely normal. He's a nice option and that's why he is with us."

Sergio Romero has been ruled out of this summer’s World Cup finals in Russia.

The Argentine Football Federation confirmed on Tuesday that the Manchester United goalkeeper will undergo surgery to remedy a "joint blockage in his right knee". Romero had just returned to the United first-team on the final day of the Premier League season having sustained an injury while on international duty. However, he was dropped for the FA Cup final six days later due to a lack of fitness affording David de Gea only his second start of the competition. "Romero was injured for a long, long time," Jose Mourinho said in the build-up to Wembley. "He was injured for two and something months. It’s not about trust, it’s not about confidence in him." Romero was initially named in Argentina’s 23-man squad, but it remains unclear whether he suffered a setback in training with the national team or whether he arrived carrying the problem. There has been no official timeline offered at this stage. Nahuel Guzman has been called up.

Ciaran Clark is targeting a return in pre-season after injury ruled the defender out of Newcastle’s final three games.

The 26-year-old has found himself of the peripherals of the first-team team after picking up a knee injury at Crystal Palace in early February. The setback coincided with the return to fitness of Florian Lejeune, who came in to partner captain Jamaal Lascelles, and Rafa Benitez never deviated from the defensive pairing for the remainder of the campaign. Earlier this month, Republic of Ireland manager Martin O’Neill confirmed that Clark would miss the upcoming friendly internationals versus France and the United States due to injury. "I had an injection a couple of weeks ago in my knee," Clark told nufc.co.uk. "Coming towards the end of the season, I'd been trying to train and doing a little bit outside, but it'd not been quite right, so we took the view that we'd leave it for a couple of weeks. Hopefully by pre-season it'll be back to normal and I'll be ready to go again for next season."

Brighton have made their first signing of the summer, welcoming Leon Balogun on a free transfer.

The Nigeria international, 29, spent last season at Bundesliga side Mainz. The centre-back has signed a two year contract. "Leon will add more depth to our defensive options," said Brighton manager Chris Hughton. "[He] has valuable experience, having played in the Bundesliga, the Europa League and at international level," he added. Balogun has 16 caps for the Nigerian national team and is in their 30 man provisional squad for the World Cup. He missed the 2014 edition through injury.

West Ham United have appointed one of the world’s "most respected" football coaches according to joint chairman David Sullivan.

The club announced on Tuesday that former Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini had signed a three-year deal at the London Stadium. The 64-year-old joined Chinese Super League outfit Hebei China Fortune after leaving The Etihad in the summer of 2016 but returns to the Premier League to succeed the recently deposed David Moyes. "Manuel brings a reputation for attacking football and getting the best out of his players," said Sullivan. "We believe he will attract new talent to the London Stadium as well as improving the current squad." The Chilean is said to be "excited about this project" and believes with the addition of another "four or five players" West Ham are going to have a strong team capable of "reaching important targets for the season." Pellegrini becomes the club’s highest ever paid manager, believed to be in the region of £10 million-per-year, despite agreeing a hefty pay cut from his bumper deal in China.

What a boost it could be for Liverpool if Emre Can is deemed fit for Saturday's Champions League final.

The star midfielder has been out since March with a back injury and was left off Germany's provisional World Cup roster as a result. But manager Jurgen Klopp confirmed that Can participated in training at Anfield on Monday with the team and now has a chance to play in the final against Real Madrid on Saturday night, where the Reds could use as much help as possible, in what could be Can's final game in a Liverpool shirt before an expected summer move to Juventus: "With Emre or players in the situation of Emre it depends on the reaction on things [but] let me say it like this: 10 days ago, I didn’t think it was possible that he could do what he did today, and that he could do what he did in Marbella already. "That looked good and my impression of him is really positive, but we have to wait again until tomorrow. But the door, of course, is open. It’s really nice to have him back in the group and he is really desperate to be part of [the final] and we will see."

Arsenal officially confirmed that midfielder Santi Cazorla will leave the club at the end of his contract this summer.

The 33-year-old midfielder has not played for the Gunners since October 2016 due to an Achilles injury and looks set to join former club Villarreal. Cazorla made 180 appearances for Arsenal since 2012/13, when he scored a career-high 12 goals. "Santi is always one of my favourite players to watch," chief executive Ivan Gazidis said. "His natural ability with both feet, his speed of thought and movement were central to our best performances in recent years. He plays with a joy and freedom which is very rare. We wish him well for the future and thank him for his important contribution to our club."
