The anticipated debut of Louis van Gaal's Manchester United did not go as everyone predicted as an upstart Swansea City dealt the hosts a stunning 1-2 defeat.

Fantasy managers, United supporters, and pretty much the entire global soccer community were not expecting this result, though one has to wonder if somewhere right now David Moyes is grinning. Even if this version of United were not poised to completely turn around the disappointment of last season, one would have at least thought they wouldn't lose their home opener for the first time in forty-two years. Rooney managed to grab his first goal of the season and not ruin the day for the vast majority of managers who invested in him, but those looking for a clean sheet or attacking production from the likes of Juan Mata and Ashley Young will have little to celebrate. van Gaal will get to enjoy a solid week of media pressure after this debut. Welcome to the Premier League Louis.

Swansea City have reached an agreement with Eredivisie side Ajax for the transfer of center back Mike van der Hoorn for a fee of around £2m.

The 23-year-old Dutch defender will travel to Wales this week to hash out the terms of his deal with the Swans, but, unless there is some sort of unforeseen faux pas, he will become the first signing of the summer for Franseco Guidolin. van der Hoorn would not likely be an automatic starter from the jump for Swansea, but Federico Fernandez would seem the likeliest to be under threat with Ashley Williams a mainstay as the club captain. The Jacks still have Jordi Amat in the mix as well. It will be a situation to monitor in preseason as there could be a bargain player to emerge as Williams' partner this coming fantasy season.

Republic of Ireland looked to be in line to upset host France with an early goal by Robbie Brady, but things fell apart for them in the second half and France would score twice unanswered to win, 2-1.

It was the perfect start for Republic of Ireland when Southampton's Shane Long was tripped in the box by Paul Pogba, allowing Brady to step up for a spot kick. He fired it home with great accuracy and pace. Ireland outplayed France in the first half, winning 50/50 challenges and putting pressure on a shaken French defense. Everything changed in the second half though as Ireland began to tire and France would put two past them in quick succession, then were given a man advantage when Shane Duffy was sent off trying to keep another goal from scoring.

France were behind for the majority of the match, but a brace inside of four minutes by Antoine Griezmann turned things around, and they were able to advance to the quarterfinals with a 2-1 win over Republic of Ireland.

It was the worst possible start for the host country, as they handed Republic of Ireland a penalty chance which was converted, inside the first three minutes, the quickest penalty scored in the history of the tournament. France went into the halftime looking the weaker side, but some tactics were changed for the second half, and they payed off. Most important was shifting Griezmann to a central role, playing behind Olivier Giroud. Just after the hour mark, Griezmann leveled the match, heading home a fine cross from Manchester City right back Bacary Sagna. Just a few minutes later, Olivier Giroud headed a ball into Griezmann's path and he sizzled it past the Irish keeper. He nearly made it a hat trick within five minutes, but Shane Duffy fouled him and was sent off for the infraction. France couldn't distance themselves from then on, but they allowed Republic of Ireland virtually no chance to search for an equalizer.

Chelsea's Cesar Azpilicueta is reportedly wanted by a number of big European clubs.

It's unlikely that Chelsea will sell Azpilicueta, who is 26 years old and just entering his prime. Some of the rumors are saying that Jose Mourinho may be interested in Azpilicueta, but it's hard to image Chelsea selling to a rival. The defender will likely be a Chelsea player next season, so draft him as you normally would.

Romelu Lukaku has left his future in the hands of his agent - Mino Raiola.

There are rumors sending Lukaku to Chelsea or Manchester United, but it is reportedly going to come down to Lukaku's agent as to where he ends up next season. The striker has previously stated he wants to play in the Champions League, and Chelsea wouldn't be able to provide that, but money always speaks louder.

Gareth Bale served in a great cross that force a bad touch from Gareth McAuley and ended up as the only goal of the match.

It wasn't a great match as far as entertainment value. Northern Ireland were intent on making it a grind of a match with few chances in either direction. It nearly worked but Gareth Bale produced a moment of magic that would have been guided home by Hal Robson-Kanu had McAuley not intervened unsuccessfully first. Wales are now on to the quarterfinals of Euro 2016

Southampton have announced the signing of winger Nathan Redmond.

The Norwich winger joins the Saints on a five-year deal scheduled to keep him at St Mary's until 2021. The youngster has a bright future ahead of him and was very impressive for Norwich last season, despite failing to keep them in the Premier League. Redmond will likely start and is a decent mid to late round fantasy pick.

Xherdan Shaqiri delivered what has to be the goal of the tournament so far to get Switzerland level with Poland, but Poland would win in a penalty shootout, 1-1 (5-4 pens).

It was an entertaining affair with shots aplenty from both sides throughout the match, though the finishing was not there for the most part. Poland took the lead in the first half, as a cross by Kamil Grosicki in the 39th minute found Jakub Blaszczykowski in space and he was able to nutmeg the keeper for the score. Switzerland won the possession battle in the first half and they kept the ball even more in the second frame, but Swansea's Lukasz Fabianski was superb in the Polish net, making a couple of spectacular saves. There was nothing he could do about Switzerland's leveler in the 82nd minute though, when Shaqiri delivered a stunning bicycle kick from distance that caromed in off the post. The two side played a goalless extra thirty minutes and went to a shootout. Each side scored except for new Arsenal signing Granit Xhaka, who's shot went well wide of the target. Poland advances now to face the winner of Croatia v Portugal.

Liverpool is reportedly in the advanced stages of securing a summer transfer for Southampton midfielder Sadio Mane.

The Reds have been in talks with Southampton over the past week and are close to agreeing to a fee in the range of £30 million. Southampton originally wanted £40 million for the 24-year-old bought for just £10 million from Salzberg in the summer of 2014, but the departure of Ronald Koeman has hastened negotiations over a summer move. The Senegalese international scored 11 goals last season in the Premier League but really found his form with eight goals in the final eight games of the season.

"Sky Sports" confirm that Norwich City midfielder Nathan Redmond is undergoing a medical at Southampton on Saturday.

Norwich City has reportedly accepted an £11 million bid for the 22-year-old as the Canaries are looking to sell their most valuable players as they face another season in the Championship after just one year back in the Premier League. Redmond scored six goals in 34 Premier League appearances last season and helped lead the England U21s to a Toulon Tournament title last month. Redmond is expected to replace Southampton star Sadio Mane as the midfielder is expected to join Liverpool in a £30 million-plus deal.

Luke Shaw is closing in on a return to action with the Manchester United full-back pencilled in to play in the International Champions Cup against Borussia Dortmund in July.

The 20-year-old was originally said to be targeting a place in United’s FA Cup final squad in May but following a minor setback, the then manager Louis van Gaal confirmed, Shaw would not be ready and instead would use the time to get ready for pre-season. Shaw posted a social media update this week confirming he was on track to re-join the main group when they return in early July: "Training done for the day. Building up to pre-season now." The left-back will be assessed before a decision is made on whether he will travel to Shanghai for United's first game of the summer and his first since suffering a double leg fracture in September 2015.
