England youth international Jesse Lingard has been photographed leaving hospital after the midfielder suffered a knee injury during Saturdays’ loss to Swansea City.

Injury problems mount for Manchester United as Jesse Lingard looks set for an extended spell on the side-lines; the youngster was making his first competitive start for his club side in the season opener but lasted only 24 minutes as he overstretched to challenge Ashley Williams. Lingard limped away from Bridgewater Hospital in Manchester today on crutches with his knee fixed in a hinged brace; a support typically associated with ligament damage. Louis van Gaal could now be forced to quickly add to his current squad with potentially up to ten first team players out of next weekend’s clash against Sunderland.

Aston Villa defender Ciaran Clark will be assessed after a back injury forced the Irish defender off during Sundays’ home draw against Sunderland.

Clark has enjoyed the last month in the Villa starting eleven with Ron Vlaar and Philippe Senderos both struggling with injury recently – the central defender has formed a solid partnership with Jores Okore in the heart of Paul Lambert’s back four. However injury now threatens to keep him out of the New Year’s Day clash at home to struggling Crystal Palace with Okore ready to slot back into the side after he was rested to help protect him against the heavy fixture schedule following his long lay-off this year. Paul Lambert also confirmed the club may appeal the straight red card Fabian Delph received against the Black Cats – the first of his career – as he overstretched to tackle Jordi Gomez.

Irish midfielder James McCarthy was enjoying his brief foray back into the Everton starting eleven following a number of weeks out due to a hamstring problem.

However McCarthy was withdrawn during half-time in the defeat to Newcastle at St James’ Park after the midfielder was flagged as being at "high risk" of injury with Ross Barkley taking his place. For the first time in his Everton managerial career Roberto Martinez is feeling the pressure of the Goodison crowd having only won one from seven losing five – and despite being in twelfth the Toffees are just 5 points above the relegation zone. Their downturn in form can be attributed to a number of injuries to key players including the likes of Phil Jagielka, Tim Howard, Steven Pienaar, Leon Osman and Darron Gibson. Next up Everton travel to the KC to face a Hull side who have their own league problems at the moment.

Bojan Krkic will have a scan on Monday to determine the extent of a hamstring injury which forced his withdrawal late into the second half on Sunday having already played his part in helping Stoke secure their second win within 48 hours.

Bojan had been a doubt during the build-up to GW19 because of a back problem but following a late fitness test was deemed fit enough to play although this latest setback could be related. The win over West Brom marked the scoring return of Mame Biram Diouf – two goals – the first a well taken strike before grabbing his second with a rather fortuitous deflection from an Arnautovic shot which wrong footed Ben Foster in the Baggies goal. Alan Irvine’s men are hovering precariously above the relegation zone with only one win from their last nine Premier League outings.

Yaya Toure missed Manchester City’s disappointing draw at the Etihad on Sunday as the Ivorian midfielder was rested as a precaution because of concerns regarding a minor groin problem.

Manuel Pellegrini confirmed post-match yesterday that Yaya Toure was missing from Sundays’ match-day squad because of a muscular issue which he felt during the build-up to GW18 at the Hawthorns. However those comments were contradictory to the answer he gave on Boxing Day when questions were asked regarding the early withdrawal of Toure and Silva against West Brom "[both players] are fine and were [substituted] to keep them fresh [for Sunday]." But having seen City lose a two goal lead at the Etihad Pellegrini confirmed Toure would be assessed on Monday because of a niggling groin issue although the rumour mongers will have you believe the manager is trying to save face having rested Toure [four yellow cards] against what would be perceived as weaker opposition to keep him available for the Sunderland game on New Year’s Day.

Papiss Cisse was instrumental in Newcastle's 2-3 win over Everton at Goodison Park, as an elbow and a goal swung the game in the Magpies direction.

With both clubs struggling, it is no surprise that a controversy may have played a role in how their fates were sealed. Down 1-0, Cisse was poised in the box waiting for a corner to come in, and he clearly elbowed, or at least attempted to elbow, Seamus Coleman in the face three times. The ref did not see what will likely result in a 3 match ban once reviewed by the league. Just a few moments later, Cisse rubbed salt in the wound by scoring the equalizer. Everton's morale, which was already fragile to begin with, was all but shattered from then on, and Newcastle would add goals from Ayoze Perez and Jack Colback in the second half to seal the points. Cisse's goal record continues to impress when he can just get on the pitch. He now has 9 on the season in just 636 minutes, or, just a touch more than seven full matches. The problem is his pitch time is too erratic to deal with in fantasy and a likely 3 match ban looming only supports that notion.

Everton lost their third straight league match, a first under the reign of Roberto Martinez, as a lack of confidence and subsequent errors cost them in a 2-3 loss to Newcastle United.

Newcastle arrived to Goodison struggling with three losses on the trot and the atmosphere pre-match was one of optimism for the Toffees that today would mark a positive turn in their season. Instead, they were booed off of their ground at the final whistle. The day began perfect, as Arouna Kone put them ahead on five minutes after finishing from a Seamus Coleman cross. Then the wheels began to fall off as Newcastle scored three unanswered. Kevin Mirallas would score from a precision pass by Leighton Baines to give the Toffees a chance late, but it was not enough. Roberto Martinez made seven changes to his side from Boxing Day, more than any other manager. He probably wishes he could make twelve changes to his XI if it were possible.

Leicester got their first win since September with the help of a Riyah Mahrez goal in the first half.

Mahrez scored a curling shot from outside the box that ended up being the match-winning goal. The game was not short of drama, as both Paul Konchesky and Stephen Quinn were both sent off near the end of the match. This is Leicester's second game in a row where they've played well away from home and they seem to be gaining some momentum.

Manchester City blew the chance to close the gap on leaders Chelsea as they threw away a two goal half-time lead to draw 2-2 with Burnley.

Chance blown by Manchester City, as they threw away the chance to move within one point of Chelsea. The reigning champions cruised through the first half thanks to goals by David Silva and a magnificent strike by Fernandinho gave them a 2-0 half time lead, but it all changed in the second half as Burnley fought back in impressive style. George Boyd pulled one back for the Clarets when he turned home Danny Ings' shot (although Boyd was clearly in an offside position) before Ashley Barnes reacted quickest in a crowded penalty area to smash home a loose ball to make it 2-2. City were shaken as Burnley pushed for a winner, but the game ended in a draw, a fair result after a ding-dong battle. Manuel Pellegrini's men remain second, three points off the top, while Burnley remain second from bottom but only goal difference away from safety.

Queens Park Rangers vs Crystal Palace ends 0-0 after a sloppy affair from both sides.

Steven Caulker had a chance cleared off the line for QPR and Jason Puncheon had a decent stoppage time effort for Palace, but beyond that there were very from chances from either team Sunday at Loftus Road. The quick turnaround from Boxing Day seemed to take a little bit out of the players both physically and mentally. Palace (16 points) are winless in their last seven and remain in the relegation zone while QPR now sit three spots above them with 18 points. Rangers battle Swansea at home on New Year's day and Palace travel to Aston Villa.

Aston Villa held on to secure a 0-0 draw against Sunderland after playing the majority of the second half with 10 men following Fabian Delph's dismissal.

Bore-draw alert! This was a poor match which had just a single shot in target in a forgettable first half. The game improved after Delph was sent off for a late lunge on Jordi Gomez and both sides missed chances including Gomez hitting the post, but a draw was a fair result in the end. Villa remain in 13th while Sunderland sit one place below them, four points above the drop zone.

Chelsea midfielder Oscar missed the gameweek 19 match against Southampton due to an illness.

We had hyped up Oscar as a low-chance of being rested for this week and it backfired by him missing out completely due to an unannounced illness. Jose Mourinho brought the news in the post-match conference but didn't specify a return for the Brazilian. Oscar has a good chance of returning for New Year's Day but we would check back before the deadline for any updates.
