Sebastien Pocognoli has had a strong start to his West Brom career but he won't get to continue it in Week 3 with the right back out with a thigh injury.

He certainly isn't setting the world on fire but Sebastien Pocognoli has been a solid addition to a West Brom back line that needed a big renovation over the summer. As more of the projected starting group (Gareth McAuley and Cristian Gamboa) return to the line-up, Pocognoli will exit for at least one week.

After a delay of several weeks, the FA have punished Joey Barton with an 18-month ban for his decade-long gambling offenses.

The FA initially charged Barton back in early March, but the disciplinary hearing was delayed for several weeks because a chief investigator on the case fell ill. This allowed Barton to make a few more appearances for Burnley but, with a 34-year-old banned from football for a year and a half, one has to speculate whether Barton may have kicked the last ball of his professional career, a career with no shortage of controversy. While his temperament led to trouble both on and off the pitch, he has been able to succeed at a high level as a midfield enforcer, most recently helping Burnley to the top flight last season. Whether or not this is the end of the line for Barton, it is hard to imagine him fading quietly into the sunset. For the handful of fantasy managers who had been using Barton in draft leagues, it is now safe to drop him.

Joey Barton will appeal his 18-month suspension after he admitted a Football Association charge relating to betting on matches.

The Burnley midfielder is said to be "very disappointed at the harshness of the sanction" and if Barton is unsuccessful in having his ban reduced, then it’s unlikely he will ever play professionally again, certainly in the top-flight. At the age of 34, Barton admits: "The decision effectively forces me into an early retirement from playing football. I accept that I broke the rules governing professional footballers, but I do feel the penalty is heavier than it might be for other less controversial players." Barton was reunited with his former boss Sean Dyche in January following an unhappy stint at Rangers, and has enjoyed a successful return to Turf Moor. However, his contract will be terminated with immediate effect, if his ban for placing 1,260 bets between March 2006 and May 2016, breaching FA Rule E8, is not reduced. Steven Defour is poised for a return at Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Hull City will once again be without the services of Omar Elabdellaoui when they face Southampton at St Mary’s this weekend.

The Norwegian international has been struggling with a back problem since March and Marcos Silva will have to wait for another week, at least, before Elabdellaoui is ready for a return to first-team action. Everton loanee Oumar Niasse is available for selection after the Football Association decided to rescind the red card he was issued versus Watford in game week thirty-four. The Tigers have no fresh injury concerns but Ryan Mason [skull fracture], Moses Odubajo, Will Keane and David Meyler [all knee] remain on the sidelines. Greg Luer and Brian Lenihan continue to build fitness with the development side.

Tottenham kept their title hopes alive with a hard-fought 1-0 victory at Crystal Palace thanks to Christian Eriksen's superb 78th-minute strike.

Tottenham struggled to break down an in-form Palace side for much of the match at Selhurst Park. But, despite a quiet performances by Harry Kane and Dele Alli, Mauricio Pochettino's side stayed patient before a magic move from Eriksen finally broke the Palace defense. The Dane exploited a rare bit of space in the center of the park, letting fly from 35-yards out and into the bottom corner beyond the reach of Wayne Hennessey. The result means Tottenham move on to 74 points, surpassing their previous best ever league total of 72, and within four points of leaders Chelsea.

Sunderland sit on the brink of relegation after Wednesday's 1-0 lose to Middlesbrough in the Tees-Wear derby.

Marten de Roon's early goal was too much for Sunderland to overcome at the Riverside Stadium despite the visitors controlling the attacking chances throughout the match. Didier N'Dong was denied by Brad Guzan 10 minutes from the break, with Billy Jones heading the rebound over the bar, while Wahbi Khazri's early second-half free-kick drew another stop from the Boro keeper. Their best chance of the match came late on when Jermian Defoe looked to be in one-one-one, but the striker was flagged offside. The result leaves the Black Cats 12 points adrift from safety with five matches remaining, meaning they must win out to have a chance at pulling off another remarkable relegation escape.

Arsenal left it late but Nacho Monreal bounced a shot off of Robert Huth and past Peter Schmeichel as the Gunners beat Leicester City 1-0 at the Emirates.

Arsenal dominated possession for nearly the entire match but had precious little to show for it heading toward the end of the match. For all of their passing around the outside of the box they had trouble generating anything resembling a solid opportunity on goal. It looked for all the world like the match was going to end nil-nil and effectively end Arsenal's quest for a Champions League spot until Nacho Monreal took a rebound out of the air and got a fortunate bounce off of Huth that was ruled an own goal for the win.

Robert Huth couldn't get out of the way of Nacho Monreal's shot and the deflection, ruled an own goal, ended up as the only goal of the match.

Leicester City have one point to show for their four matches against the Gunners since the start of last season. Arsenal were the only club to beat the Foxes twice last season as Claudio Ranieri's boys shocked the world. Fast forward a year and it looked like it was going to be two nil-nil draws this season as Craig Shakespeare's edition of the Foxes were well on their way to authoring a valiant holding action in the face of dominant Arsenal possession. It was not to be as Robert Huth inadvertently steered Nacho Monreal's shot, which was headed well wide, into the net in the 86th minute.

Jose Mourinho provided a mixed update ahead of Thursday’s Manchester derby with Paul Pogba set to miss out because of injury.

The £89m midfielder performed as a "hero" at Turf Moor before he was replaced during the dying moments of the 2-0 win. Mourinho described Pogba as "dead" on Sunday following a gruelling week of football which included an extra-time victory over Anderlecht in the Europa League. "Dead he is for sure," said Mourinho. "If he's injured or if it's just the super accumulation of fatigue in the muscles, I don't know." However, the United manager confirmed during today’s press conference that Pogba would not be ready to face Man City having failed to train this week. Ander Herrera [ankle] has been passed fit, while Antonio Valencia is also expected to return the ranks, but Mourinho must contend with several absentees with Zlatan Ibrahimović, Marcos Rojo, Juan Mata, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones ruled out through injury: "We go with what we have and we fight with what we have."

David Silva seems certain to miss tomorrow’s Manchester derby having failed to recover the knock which forced him off at Wembley.

The Spain star was caught during the opening exchanges of Sundays FA Cup semi-final by Arsenal centre-back Gabriel, but despite trying to run the injury off, he was replaced on 23 minutes: "David [is a] real, real doubt - I don’t know if he will be ready to play," Pep Guardiola said. However, it does look like Sergio Aguero will be OK following a return to training while Gabriel Jesus is available after three months out due to a fractured metatarsal, although his "physical condition is not optimal." Fernandinho was confident of recovering earlier this week but there was no mention from Pep. Bacary Sagna could also make a surprise return but John Stones is struggling with an unspecified muscular problem and is likely to be absent again.

With Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain playing very well as the primary right-sided wing-back/outside midfielder in Arsene Wenger's 3-4-3 there is an open question about what becomes of Hector Bellerin.

Given that we're only two matches into the 3-4-3 experiment at Arsenal it is hardly a fait accompli that the transition is going to become a fixture at the Emirates. That said, the combination of the new formation and the strong performances by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in that role leaves open the possibility that star right back Hector Bellerin becomes something of a square peg in a round hole for the Gunners. Any plan that relies heavily on Oxlade-Chamberlain playing the majority of a 38 match season is probably fanciful but if Bellerin isn't slotted as a regular starter coming into next season it seems likely he will want to reconsider the frequent interest in him from clubs like Manchester City and Barcelona. Maybe a shift to the left side to replace an aging Nacho Monreal. Maybe a job-share with the Ox. What's certain is that Bellerin is less valuable to fantasy managers today than he was even slumping as a regular starter a few weeks ago.

Ryan Bertrand scored a late goal against former club Chelsea but it wasn't nearly enough as the Blues beat the Saints 4-2 at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.

After a number of reunions in the tunnel leading up to the match, Ryan Bertrand can be happy with scoring a goal against his former mates but not with the outcome for his side. The Saints trailed early and often against the leaders with Eden Hazard opening the scoring after five minutes. Oriol Romeu equalized in the 24th minute but Gary Cahill put the Blues ahead to stay in first half stoppage time. Diego Costa extended the lead twice and ended it as a contest before Bertrand got his goal deep in second half stoppage time to salvage a little pride if not a useful result.
