The 6'4 Oscar Cardozo has an exceptional track record for Benfica (106 goals in 160) matches. He'd be a great get if this one happens.

Cardozo has now past his 30th birthday meaning that the purpose of buying him is purely staying in the Premier League. He would not likely be interested in a season in the Championship nor is he likely to have significant sell-on value. Still, for a team that didn't have anyone over 10 goals in the Championship last season, bringing in a proven top-division (even if it is Portugal's top division) forward would be a big plus.

After missing three league matches due to a hamstring issue, Steven Naismith returned to Everton's starting XI and promptly delivered a goal and an assist in the Toffee's win over QPR Monday night.

Naismith got off to a red-hot start to begin the season, scoring once in each of Everton's first three matches, but could only add another between then and this past weekend as his form dipped and then his hamstring put him on the shelf. Naismith will never be a flair pick at the forward position but he is generally undervalued in most fantasy formats. In the Yahoo game, he can also pad his numbers with some non-scoring categories that many other forwards are rarely able to do, speaking to his workman's like approach that Roberto Martinez recognizes. He may not repeat his 20 point Yahoo haul this weekend away to Southampton, but a home game against Stoke to follow after promises plenty of chances.

Mesut Ozil was spotted heading to a training session before the weekend win over Newcastle and is hopeful that he will return sooner than the January estimate.

There isn't a great deal of time between now and the suggested January return date that has been mooted for Mesut Ozil's return from his knee ligament injury. That said, returning in the early part of January would be a big boost for Arsene Wenger's men. Ozil told Arsenal's internal media group "I am working every day to get myself fit and I am on the right path now. It won't be much too much longer before I am back on the pitch. I hope to be back training with the whole team again as soon as possible." Make of that what you will.

Arsene Wenger has indicated that he isn't certain about Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's prospects for playing against Liverpool on Sunday after injuring his groin against Newcastle.

The Ox was already playing in an unusual spot last weekend with Aaron Ramsey, Mikel Arteta, and Jack Wilshere all injured. When Oxlade-Chamberlain went off with a groin problem it left Arsenal incredibly thin at the base of midfield with only Mathieu Flamini, the recently returned Francis Coquelin, and 17-year-old Ainsley Maitland-Niles to fill two spots with none offering a great deal going forward. Oxlade-Chamberlain faces a Saturday fitness test before there is any additional clarity on this situation so managers in salary cap leagues with early Saturday transfer deadlines should consider the Ox out unless you have a huge tolerance for risk and/or a great bench.

With the busy festive schedule ramping up, fantasy managers will be looking for cheap bench players that can offer something should a fantasy starter be rested and Scott Arfield can provide that in midfield.

Arfield raised some eyebrows by scoring against Chelsea on opening day but has failed to find the net since. After the acquisition of George Boyd from Hull at the transfer deadline, Boyd has been the more dangerous of the Clarets' regular starting wide midfielders but Arfield at the very least has his position nailed down, and at a price of just 2.9m in Yahoo, he can provide some depth, and you never know, a possible nice score in place of one of your regulars should they miss a match.

With the current rash of injuries among the Reds, Brendan Rodgers has been using three centerbacks and playing Alberto Moreno further up the pitch as more of a wingback/midfielder which adds to his fantasy value.

This would be extremely significant if Liverpool were defending anywhere near adequately right now, but they are not, so expecting a clean sheet along with any potential attacking returns from Moreno this weekend is asking a bit much as they host Arsenal this weekend. Still, any out-of-position players moved farther up the pitch are worth alerting as the chance of reaping points through attacking and defending is always possible.

Stephane Sessegnon collected three shots on target in West Brom's 1-0 win over Aston Villa in Week 16.

Sessegnon is a frustrating player. He has moments when he absolutely sparkles but then he'll disappear for long stretches. He was at his active best in Week 16 firing three shots on target. He didn't get a goal but between the shots on target and winning four fouls, he put up a strong fantasy total for a West Brom team that didn't put up great stats despite winning. The problem is that history tells us that this is the anomaly rather than the start of a trend. Probably best not to overreact to one active match as Sessegnon is just as likely to be on the bench of ninety minutes in Week 17 as he is to repeat the double digit performance.

Gareth McAuley started his second straight match for West Brom in Week 16 and the Baggies recorded their second straight clean sheet in the 1-0 victory over Aston Villa.

Craig Dawson appeared to be playing well and have supplanted veteran Gareth McAuley in the spine of Alan Irvine's starting line-up. Irvine appears to have done a 180 degree turn on that decision over the last two weeks and inserted McAuley back into the heart of the defense. The result has been two consecutive clean sheets and four points to show over the two matches. Whether this is a permanent change or just an extended break for Dawson remains to be seen. Regardless, it is good news for Albion that they have three quality center backs to choose from as the season wears on.

It appears that Alan Irvine may have changed Saido Berahino's role to "late-match change of pace" after dropping the forward from the starting line-up for two consecutive weeks.

West Brom isn't enough of an attacking force that you'd think they could afford to rotate their leading goal-scorer on a regular basis but that is what Alan Irvine has done over Week 15 and Week 16. After starting Berahino consistently from Week 1 through Week 14, Irvine decided to try a different approach with a player who hadn't scored since the end of October. While bringing Berahino on late didn't directly create a goal, it certainly changed up the attacking mix and a goal and a win did come within a few minutes of the player being introduced. Fantasy managers should be aware that the arrangement could continue which would have an impact on Berahino's opportunity to collect phantom points over the course of an entire match.

Bojan had been on fire for close to a month leading up to the Crystal Palace match but a relatively quiet display culminating in a hip injury may slow his progress.

Although it won't show up in any stat sheet or fantasy point tally, Bojan did make a significant contribution to Peter Crouch's goal against Crystal Palace on Saturday. It was the former Barca man's attacking drive that eventually found it's way to Peter Crouch after Jon Walters muffed the shot that Bojan teed up for him. Early in the second half Bojan had to be substituted with a hip injury. His status for Week 17 remains up in the air.

Juan Mata scored one and created one in Manchester United's 3-0 win over Liverpool continuing a strong run of form that has run from November into December.

With Angel Di Maria out of action with a hamstring issue, Manchester United needed someone to step into the Argentine's creative role in midfield. Juan Mata, an afterthought for much of the early part of the season, has taken the opportunity provided by Di Maria's absence and run with it. With three goals and an assist since the beginning of November he is definitely forcing himself into Louis Van Gaal's thinking. Hard to believe there was a time this season when Adnan Januzaj was starting ahead of a healthy Mata.

Wayne Rooney scored United's opening goal and contributed a little bit of everything to the not-as-convincing-as-the-scoreline-makes-it-look 3-0 victory.

If ever there was a stat line and a match that summarized Wayne Rooney as a player, this was it. Manchester United won, he scored a goal, added a couple shots on target, got a yellow card, committed a couple additional fouls and contributed various and sundry other stats. The end result was good for both the team (they won) and Rooney (17 fantasy points in the Yahoo system). How they got there wasn't necessarily as great (it could easily have been 3-2 Liverpool but for De Gea's greatness and a blown off-side on Mata's goal). Hard to figure but it works out far more often than not for Rooney.
