The 6'4 Oscar Cardozo has an exceptional track record for Benfica (106 goals in 160) matches. He'd be a great get if this one happens.

Cardozo has now past his 30th birthday meaning that the purpose of buying him is purely staying in the Premier League. He would not likely be interested in a season in the Championship nor is he likely to have significant sell-on value. Still, for a team that didn't have anyone over 10 goals in the Championship last season, bringing in a proven top-division (even if it is Portugal's top division) forward would be a big plus.

Southampton failed to beat Hapoel Beer Sheva and knocked themselves out of the Europa League in doing so tonight at St Mary's.

Southampton needed a win or 0-0 draw to go through to the knock-out rounds of the competition and played for the latter option for the vast majority of the game. They successfully limited the Israeli outfit beyond the 75th minute without a shot on target before Maor Buzaglo scored for the visitors from the edge of the box. Earlier in the match, Southampton's chances were too limited by their compact defensive style with their only efforts of note being a Redmond curler which was batted away and a wide Van Dijk header. As they chanced the game in the dying moments, seeking two goals desperately, the Dutch centre-back did score with a prod in stoppage time but it was too little, too late. To compound Claude Puel's bothers, Charlie Austin was also forced off in the first half with a shoulder injury.

Southampton talisman Charlie Austin was forced off in the first half of their 1-1 Europa League draw with Hapoel Be'er Sheva with a shoulder injury.

Doubts are now being cast over the Englishman's ability to play in this weekend's Premier League encounter with Middlesbrough. Austin has been Southampton's main provider of goals this term, supplying nine. That's three times more than their second best goalscorer, Nathan Redmond, on three. Their over-reliance on Austin has been to their detriment already this season and now that issue is going to raise itself again. More should be known about about Austin's issue by press conference time on Friday but it can probably be assumed he is out of GW15 and maybe beyond.

One of Arsenal's two biggest injury concerns could be alleviated with Hector Bellerin pushing for a Week 15 return against Stoke City.

While the Gunners haven't lost in a competition where they fielded their first team since Bellerin went out in early November, they will be excited to get their superstar right back in the line-up soon. With Carl Jenkinson failing to re-establish himself and Gabriel a questionable fit at right back, Bellerin's return will be welcomed, especially as the fixtures start coming fast and furious in late December/early January. If Bellerin doesn't pass his fitness test for Saturday then expect him back in mid-week at Goodison Park on Tuesday.

Diego Costa, Pedro and David Luiz are all just one yellow card away from a one-match ban due to card accumulation.

Be aware if you have one (or more) of the starting trio, who are all sitting on four yellow cards at the moment, in your team as Chelsea still have five Premier League games before the December 31 cut-off, meaning the quota extends to 10 yellow cards by April starting on New Year's Day. Make sure to plan accordingly by adding depth to your squad during the festive period to ensure that you're not caught without a backup in case of a yellow card, not to mention the squad rotation expected to take place throughout the Premier League during the packed fixture list.

Seamus Coleman is expected to be in the Everton lineup against Watford this weekend, according to Ronald Koeman.

The right-back only just returned to training on Thursday after sustaining a knock that saw him leave the club's 1-1 draw with Manchester United on Sunday. But Koeman said the Irish international came through training without an issue and is set to be available for the weekend:"Seamus is okay. He did a normal first training session today. In the beginning of the week he still had some pain but it looks positive. Normally I’d expect him to be available for the match."

Arsenal center-back Per Mertesacker said he is hoping to return to match action early in the New Year following knee surgery.

Mertesacker suffered a knee injury in July in a preseason friendly that required surgery, which has kept him out for nearly six months now. But the veteran defender is nearing a return which the New Year on the horizon. Said Mertesacker: "I'm able to run now, painless, and it's what it's all about. When you are able to run again after such a long time it makes you feel happy. I'm hopeful that I can join the team properly and be available to the team next year. That's my resolution. I want to be back on the pitch and with the ball."

Leicester City ended their Champions League group phase on a sour note after they were thumped 5-0 by FC Porto, the heaviest defeat for an English side in the competitions history.

In a much-changed Foxes line-up, only captain Wes Morgan kept his place in the XI from the loss on Wearside four days earlier. Having already qualified for the knockout phase, Claudio Ranieri saw this game as an opportunity "to see something different" and to give those players on the fringe of the first team an opportunity to prove their worth, but some "missed their chance." Danny Drinkwater came in for his first game in a fortnight, the midfielder is currently serving a three-game domestic ban, but the sight of him limping off with a knee injury after 76 minutes is a concern although Ranieri played down fears post-match: "It doesn't look serious," he said. "He is suspended for Saturday anyway, but he should be ok."

Dusan Tadic is closing in on a return to action after missing almost a month due to a broken nose.

The Serbian attacker was injured while representing his country in a World Cup qualifier against Wales in November. Despite his initial optimism that he would play in a mask [versus Liverpool] just a week later, Tadic has missed Southampton’s last five matches. But, after re-joining the group, Claude Puel will consider Tadic for their Europa League contest with Hapoel Be’er Sheva: "He has come back into the training sessions for a few days and we will see if he can come back into the group for Thursday's game, or perhaps for Sunday. I don't know at the moment. It's important he continues to work, because he had three weeks without training sessions. It's a long time and it's important he can come back with a good physical level to help the team." Matt Targett and Alex McCarthy [both hamstring] remain on the sidelines.

After almost two months on the sidelines with an injured knee, Toby Alderweireld made his return to action last night in Tottenham's final Champions League group stage match.

While Tottenham put together a disappointing Champions League campaign, they ended on a positive note with a win last night that gives them a spot in the knockout stage of the Europa League and, in the 68th minute, ALderweireld was brought into the match for his first taste of action in nearly two months. Perhaps his pitch time and some training over the next couple of days will give him enough fitness to start for Spurs this weekend when they face Manchester United. Tottenham's entire preferred back line is healthy now and it couldn't have come at a better time as they enter a congested festive period. They should continue to be one of the tougher defenses in the league.

Tottenham were quickly eliminated from Champions League competition this season but a 3-1 win over CSKA Moscow in their final group match earns Spurs a place in the knockout stage of the Europa League.

Despite a major disappointment in this year's Champions League, Mauricio Pochettino made it pretty clear that his aspirations for a European trophy have not waned as he named a very strong XI against CSKA. What he got was Spurs most positive performance in their group stage and the club finally found success at Wembley Stadium. Dele Alli was at the center of the action for most of the evening and scored the equalizing goal on 38 minutes after CSKA has opened the scoring five minutes earlier. Harry Kane kept his consistent scoring up with the go-ahead strike just before halftime. The match was put out of reach as CSKA's keeper was the culprit in an own goal that came when Alli headed the ball on target. Perhaps the most important event of the evening, Toby Alderweireld made his first appearance back from injury as a second half substitute.

Raheem Sterling could come back into contention at Leicester City on Saturday after missing the last two games because of injury.

The 21-year-old sustained a kick to the knee at Turf Moor in game week 13, and despite training ahead of the clash with Chelsea, Sterling was not 100 percent and Pep decided to err on the side of caution. But, speaking after the 1-1 draw with Celtic, Guardiola revealed Sterling was "much better," and although he was not ready for the Champions League tie, he could return this weekend. The Citizens have three games over the next 8 days, and given the depth of Guardiola’s squad, plus his penchant for rotation, no-one is guaranteed a starting place and Sterling may have to settle for a place on the bench.
