Tottenham midfielder Mousa Dembele has cited his side's poor record against the Premier League's smaller teams as the reason they missed out on Champions League football.

Dembele appears accurate in his assessment as Tottenham enjoyed a decent record against the Top 4 - beating Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal - but often struggled to break down teams that defend in numbers. Sandro's return from injury will allow Dembele to move back to his advanced midfield role, but Andre Villas-Boas will be looking to add more creativity ahead of the new season.

Nathan Ake insists that he would rather finish out the season on loan at Bournemouth from Chelsea rather than be recalled.

The young Dutchman has grabbed his opportunity to break into the Cherries first team in recent weeks due to an injury to Charlie Daniels at cleft back and because of Adam Smith's suspension a few weeks ago at right back. He has scored twice in three league games, the memorable late winner last weekend against Liverpool and the decider in the 1-0 win over Stoke. His recent goals tripled his PL tally, having notched up one during his loan spell at Watford last season too.

Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe has eased fears that the club could lose playmaker Jack Wilshere back to Arsenal in January in a recall as part of the loan agreement between the teams.

After the news about Santi Cazorla's lengthy layoff until March emerged, heads of many swivelled to the England midfielder rebuilding his career on the south coast. Southampton's long-serving centre-back Jose Fonte has been given permission to leave the club in the January transfer window.

Fonte, who arrived at the club in 2010 from Crystal Palace has failed to reach an agreement to sign a new contract after negotiations opened in the summer. His Euro 2016 winning performances with Portugal and PL consistency attracted interest from the likes of Man Utd and Everton in the summer but both parties persisted with trying to agree new terms on his current deal which runs for another 18 months. Reports in Portugal state that Southampton will accept offers in excess of £5m for Fonte. Leading the charge in rumours are Man Utd, as they previously expressed interest and Mourinho shares the same agant, Jorge Mendes, with the 32 year old.

Hull City centre-back Curtis Davies has pleaded for reinforcements in the January transfer window to save the Tigers from the drop.

Hull now sit 19th in the league table, just above Swansea, after a poor patch of form which has included 8 defeats in ten league games. Their defeat to Middlesbrough was one of the most dour affairs of the season, with Hull only mustering up 2 shots on target and 39% possession at the Riverside in the 1-0 loss. They held off and stayed in their own half for most of the game, seemingly looking for a draw from the first whistle. Davies and Dawson were commanding and strong in defence throughout the game, ensuring that only Ramirez's moment of quality decided the tie. However going forward, Hull had no ability to hold possession and couldn't create anything of note until their late rally. Hull's first shot on target came in the 92nd minute -that's how subdued the Tigers were. Davies needs knows that the Hull squad enters the festive period paper-thin, he says they need to add to their 3 deadline day acquisitions in August in order to survive.

Stoke City fans can breath easier knowing that goalkeeper Jack Butland has not suffered another major injury setback.

The England international was pulled from last week's U23 match due to discomfort in the warmup, and reports suggested the keeper had sustained another injury to his ankle. But assistant coach Mark Bowen confirmed there is no major setback as Butland recovers from an ankle problem that has kept him out for the last eight months: "He has had his MRI scans and as far as I’m aware it’s one of those where it’s nowhere near as complicated or as bad as the last time it happened to him...It would have been a crushing blow for him if it had been a major setback but at this stage, it’s nowhere near as bad. He’s just aggravated it a bit and we hope to see him back in the next week to 10 days."

Hull City lost 1-0 at Middlesbrough on Monday and as a result remains second-bottom in the Premier League table.

Hull struggled throughout the match at Middlesbrough but looked better after the introduction of Tom Huddlestone and Jarrod Bowen, and almost stole a point through Adama Diomande in injury time. However, Diomande was denied from distance by Victor Valdes and on the resulting Robert Snodgrass corner failed to get a touch on a flick-on at the far post. Despite the late surge against the run of play, Hull City were unable to overcome former midfielder Gaston Ramirez's 60th-minute goal and suffered their third-straight defeat. The loss leaves Mike Phelan's side in the drop zone ahead of their fixture at the KC Stadium with Crystal Palace next weekend.

Gaston Ramirez headed home his second goal of the season as Middlesbrough defeated Hull City 1-0 on Monday at the Riverside Stadium.

Gaston Ramirez, who made 22 appearances with Hull City during the 2014/15 Premier League season, headed home a Vitkor Fischer cross on the hour mark to push Middlesbrough past his former club. Fischer replaced Adama Traore in the Middlesbrough starting XI and was the lone change from the side that drew at Leicester City last weekend. Boro controlled the chances in the first half and had the ball in the net after close-range header by Fischer, however, he was judged marginally offside. The home side did find the breakthrough in the 60th-minute thanks to Ramirez's simple finish from inside the six-yard box. Hull did have a chance to tied the match late - after a save from Victor Valdes produced a corner, but Adama Diomande couldn't connect at the far post. The victory was Middlesbrough's second home win of the season, and secured them a vital three points.

Mark Hughes will assess several members of his squad ahead of a tricky trip to the Emirates in game week 15.

Speaking after a bruising encounter with Burnley, the Stoke City manager revealed that Bruno Martins-Indi may have a "crack in his cheekbone" after he was caught by Ashley Barnes’ swinging elbow. The central defender will be fully assessed over the coming days, once the swelling has begun to subside. One potential replacement is Ryan Shawcross, but even though Hughes insists his skipper is not "far away," he is still feeling discomfort and has not re-joined the group in training. "The injury is right in the belly of the calf and these can be a little bit difficult to really shake off quickly because that's clearly where you get your power and you push off from." Marko Arnautovic is also managing an ongoing hip problem which stiffened up during the second half of Saturdays game following a crunching tackle from full-back Jon Flanagan.

David Moyes admits the early signs "do not look great" after Duncan Watmore was stretchered off during the home win over Leicester City.

The Sunderland forward was carried from the field late on following a heavy collision with Christian Fuchs. Watmore fell awkwardly, and now the 22-year-old looks set to join long-term injury absentees Lynden Gooch and Paddy McNair after suffering what looks to be serious knee ligament damage. Moyes also revealed that his half-time double substitution was enforced, and not "tactical genius" as the returning Jan Kirchhoff helped Sunderland on the way to a valuable three-points. "Steven [Pienaar's] eye closed over and he had blurred vision and Jason [Denayer] felt ill." Both players should return for the trip to Swansea but Watmore will be lucky to play again this year, although a scan will confirm the full extent of his injury.
