Brek Shea, hot off his Gold Cup winning goal, was injured in Stoke City's friendly with MLS' Philadelphia Union.

Shea set up Stoke's opener and scored their second before being injured in a nasty tackle. He is out for at least several weeks, and awaits further information about the severity of the injury. This is another setback for the player who has yet to show his worth at Stoke.

The Argentina Football Federation [AFA] have confirmed that West Ham playmaker Manuel Lanzini has been ruled out of this summer’s Olympic Games after suffering a knee injury during last week’s warm-up game against Colombia.

In a statement by the AFA they confirmed: "The West Ham man will remain in Miami from where he will leave for London." Lanzini was expected to miss to opening matches of the new Premier League season with the Olympic tournament due to run until August 20, but now the 23-year-old could make the trip to Stamford Bridge in game week one depending on the severity of his injury. Lanzini becomes the second West Ham player within a matter of days to be struck down, after Aaron Cresswell was ruled out for around four months, leaving Slaven Bilic without a naturally left-sided full-back until November.

Arsene Wenger is expected to provide an update on Per Mertesacker this evening amid concerns that the German defender has been ruled out for the remainder of 2016.

Mertesacker was part of the side which drew 1-1 with Lens last Friday in Arsenal’s first preseason game of the summer, but despite playing 90 minutes, the club announced yesterday that the 31-year-old would not be a part of the travelling squad to America after sustaining a knee injury. No specifics were given although rumours began to surface suggesting Mertesacker may miss up-to five months due to ligament damage. If confirmed, the Arsenal boss could be forced into the transfer market to provide defensive cover. Laurent Koscielny is expected to miss the opener against Liverpool due to his involvement at the Euros which would leave Calum Chambers to partner Gabriel Paulista [currently suffering from tonsillitis] in the heart of the Gunners defence.

Chelsea are reportedly interested in defender Kalidou Koulibaly.

Chelsea are obviously shopping this summer after the disappointment of last season and they've already added reinforcement with Michy Batshuayi and N'Golo Kante. They are now trying to reinforce defensively, and with John Terry getting old, they have eyes set on Koulibaly. Koulibaly will likely start and be a solid pick in late rounds of fantasy leagues if he ends up at Chelsea.

Idrissa Gueye could be headed to Everton after the club have triggered his release clause of £7.1m.

The clause has also been triggered by Marseille, so Gueye could be playing outside of the Premier League this season. Gueye was average with relegated Aston Villa last season and is unlikely to be a fantasy option regardless of where he ends up. You can safely avoid him in all formats.

Erik Lamela, looking to fend off a potential challenge to his spot in the line-up, scored Spurs' lone goal in their 2-1 loss to Juventus on Tuesday.

Spurs, traveling to Australia for their part in the International Champions Cup, lost their initial match to Italian Champions Juventus on Thursday. While they lost, their lone goal was promising with new arrival Victor Wanyama who won the ball as Juve attempted to clear their own end. He passed up to youngster Shayon Harrison who fed Lamela for a fine finish low to the far corner. A solid effort from a predominantly second team and youth squad for Spurs.

Arsenal have reportedly made a €35million bid for Alexandre Lacazette and had it turned down by Lyon.

Lacazette makes all the sense in the world for Arsenal and reportedly has a release clause in the €42million range. Despite the clause, Lyon has stated in no uncertain terms that Lacazette is not for sale. If there is a release clause then they don't really get to decide that but it does seem clear from their posturing that Arsenal will have to meet that release clause if they want to land their target.

Joe Allen has officially moved from Liverpool FC to Stoke City FC for a reported £13 million fee.

The Wales midfielder had an outstanding Euro2016 tournament that reaffirmed (or perhaps created) the value of Allen in the transfer market. Marginalized to varying degrees since his move to Anfield, the feeling is that his ceiling is as a mid-table player. That the slight player arrives at the Potteries, that once boasted one of the roughest and toughest squads in the division, is perhaps the biggest nod yet to the changes that Mark Hughes has instilled at the club. Don't expect a great deal in the way of statistics that show up in the box score but Allen will be a steadying presence linking defense and attack that the Potters have lacked.

Stoke City have signed Egypt international Ramadan Sobhy from Al Ahly for a fee that could reach €6 million based on the winger's performances.

Sobhy's name has been in the press with Arsenal and Roma both credited with interest prior to Mark Hughes' side capturing his signature. The player is only 19-years-old so it remains to be seen how quickly he can make the jump from the Egyptian league to the Premier League. It is likely that Sobhy is "one for the future" at Stoke City rather than there being any expectation that he will star this season. Probably not someone worth considering for fantasy purposes this season but definitely one worth watching as the season plays out. His ceiling is certainly such that he could play towards the end of this season with a view towards next.

The ICC match between local rivals Manchester United and Manchester City in China has been cancelled due to poor pitch conditions after significant rains.

With both clubs featuring new managers and needing pre-season action to solidify their new systems, the cancellation is probably more frustrating than the average pre-season cancellation might be. United are coming off a drubbing at the hands of Borussia Dortmund and would certainly have been eager to put something other than that in short term memory. City lost 1-0 to Bayern Munich last Wednesday and will now face Dortmund next Thursday.

Swansea City continue their search for a much-needed striker to add to their squad and are now approaching Manchester City about the possible acquisition of former Jack, Wilfried Bony.

The Swans are really looking to turn back the clock as they have already expressed publicly the interest in getting Joe Allen back from Liverpool. The Bony-Swansea partnership was nothing short of ideal a few years ago. They brought him in for £12 million fee, he excelled for them and they profited £13 million by selling him to City for £25 million some 18 months ago. Bony's time with the Citizens has not gone well for him. He could only crack the XI under Manuel Pellegrini when Sergio Aguero was injured and, once Kelechi Iheanacho emerged last season, Bony's chances were sliced even thinner. The Swans are hoping to convince City to at least loan Bony back to where he enjoyed so much success, if not, purchase him back outright for a fraction of what they sold him for.

Liverpool's Joe Allen is set to meet with Stoke City manager Mark Hughes about the midfielder's possible transfer to the Potters.

Swansea City were courting Allen in the hopes of getting him to return to his former club but the Jacks were not close enough in matching the money Liverpool were looking for, a valuation that surely rose after Allen's showing in Euro 2016. Stoke, however, are much closer on agreeing terms, willing to bid £13m, just £1m short of the Reds' asking price. Another attractive aspect of this possible move for Allen is to play for Hughes, who himself is a former Welsh international player and manager. Allen also has arguably more talent around him on the pitch with players like Bojan, Marko Arnautovic and Xherdan Shaqiri. This deal looks like it could happen in a few days unless Swansea up their offer.
