Newcastle are being linked with young AC Milan striker M’Baye Niang. A one-year loan with an option to buy suits the club, who are looking to bolster their attack.

Niang is a young star in the making, but hasn't shone in Milan. Newcastle are also linked to QPR's Loic Remy and are seemingly missing out on Aston Villa's Darren Bent. Niang would be good cover for Papiss Cisse and would settle in nicely with Newcastle's host of other French players.

West Ham forward Andy Carroll looks set to miss the start of the upcoming season because of a groin injury.

Speaking during West Ham's pre-season trip to Germany, manager Slaven Bilic revealed the 28-year-old forward won't be ready for the start of the Premier League campaign. "Andy is still not able to train with the team but he is working hard at Rush Green with the physios," the manager said. "I am frustrated he cannot play, now he is still injured and it is a big loss for us." Carroll's prolonged absence means he Chicharito will likely be handed his debut when the Hammers open the term against Manchester United on 13 Aug.

Slaven Bilic has confirmed Michail Antonio will miss West Ham's first match of the Premier League season against Manchester United.

The 27-year-old's 2016/17 campaign came to an early end in April when he suffered a significant hamstring, and subsequently underwent surgery. While the winger has been rehabbing with a view to be fit for the season opener, he wasn't included in the squad for pre-season trips to Austria and Germany, and won't be fit for the season opener on August 13th. Though Bilic did not reveal an exact timeline for Antonio's return, he said the England international is ahead of schedule in his recovery. As for the trip to Old Trafford, Robert Snodgrass and Sofiane Feghouli will be in contention to fill in on the right flank.

After a summer of rumors of a high profile departure from Arsenal, Alexis Sanchez will arrive in London to begin training with the club in advance of the upcoming season.

After featuring for Chile in the Confederations Cup, Arsene Wenger held with his tradition and gave Alexis some extra time off to ensure that he is rested for the season. Sanchez's absence from the Arsenal camp has done nothing to curb the flow of rumors connecting him with big money moves to Manchester City, PSG, and other high profile destinations. Where Sanchez ends up remains to be seen but Arsenal have continued to tow the party line that he will remain at the Emirates at least through the end of his current contract which runs through the end of the upcoming season.

Xherdan Shaqiri scored the Potters' only goal and was a consistent bright spot for Mark Hughes side as they fell 2-1 to Sheffield United on a 90th minute winner.

Shaqiri's issues with minor injuries and inconsistency are well-documented. No one disputes that, on his day, he is a rare talent of the sort that mid-table clubs rarely attract let alone retain. As the season nears, Shaqiri put on a great performance at Brammell Lane but supporters and fantasy managers should be wary because we've seen brilliant flashes before from the Swiss international only to be disappointed at his inability to sustain excellence. He may be worth picking up late in a draft as a reserve/lottery ticket but he isn't someone you should depend on for production despite his name and outrageous bursts of talent.

Nathan Chalobah appears to have assumed at least some set piece duties for the Hornets in pre-season action.

You certainly can't judge a season by how pre-season goes but one interesting note from Watford's training ground friendly with Glasgow Rangers on Wednesday was that Nathan Chalobah took at least one set piece in the attacking third. With a free kick positioned just outside the penalty area, Chalobah forced a save from the Rangers goalkeeper. He was also involved in the Hornets only goal as a long range shot from the former Chelsea academy man rebounded off the cross-bar to Stefano Okaka to score from close in. Watford certainly need more in the center of the park so Chalobah's progress is definitely worth watching.

Jon Walters has ingratiated himself to his new manager and supporters by scoring in both of his first two pre-season matches with the latest coming against Preston North End on Tuesday.

Walters is likely to be a reserve behind Andre Gray and Sam Vokes who scored the winner on Tuesday but knowing that there is some effective depth available to him will be great news for Sean Dyche. The arrival of Stoke City veteran Walters to a fairly thin Burnley squad isn't a sexy addition but might be exactly the sort of move that insulates them from being one injury away from near-certain relegation.

Mohamed Salah scored but it was Philippe Coutinho who dazzled as Liverpool beat Leicester City to capture the pre-season Premier League Asia Trophy 2-1.

Apparent Barcelona target Philippe Coutinho was eager to show off his best with an impressive opener from distance against the Foxes. He capped his evening and the match with an excellent pass that found newcomer Mohamed Salah for a headed winner. Despite his massive transfer fee, Salah faces a battle to win playing time in a crowded Liverpool midfield where Adam Lallana seems to be his direct competition. Scoring early in pre-season certainly won't hurt his cause.

Whether it was just to get players playing time or a legitimate experiment, Cameron Carter-Vickers featured alongside Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld in the first half against Roma in New Jersey.

Perhaps it was giving a nod to US youth international Carter-Vickers playing on his "home" soil or maybe it was to give something extra to the supporters. Still, with Vertonghen, Alderweireld, Dier, Wimmer, and Carter-Vickers all available, it is possible that Mauricio Pochettino is interested in experimenting with the now-fashionable 3 CB alignment for use in some circumstances. Perhaps it is just semantics since Dier featured as a holding midfielder with Alderweireld and Vertonghen at CB on many occasions last season. Still, it was an interesting departure for Spurs who were fairly consistent with formation last season.

Huddersfield Town's only home game of the pre-season ended in defeat on Wednesday as Serie A side Udinese came away with a 2-1 victory in front of the John Smith's faithful.

Manager David Wagner fielded two vastly different XIs for each half; with goalkeeper Jonas Lössl the lone man to play the full 90 minutes. The Terries matched Udinese throughout the early stages and took a deserved lead through Ince, his fourth goal in five friendlies outings, but conceded shortly thereafter. And, in a second-half that saw Wagner make eight changes, the Serie A outfit would go on to find the winner after an error by Town's backline. Having failed to clear a free-kick, Udinese substitute Ryder Matos pounced on the loose ball and fired home from inside the area. While the rest of the match was rather uneventful, key midfielder Jonathan Hogg was forced off with an injury late on.

Riyad Mahrez struck seven minutes from time as Leicester City picked up a 1-0 friendly victory over Luton Town on Wednesday.

Craig Shakespeare handed 20 players match time as Leicester City dominated their first of three friendlies this week, attempting 18 shots and controlling 59 per cent of possession. Among those in action only two played the full 90 minutes, with Edlin Jakupovic making his first pre-season start and Ahmed Musa providing the assist on Riyad Mahrez's 83rd-minute strike. Musa, crisp on the left wing throughout the fixture, did well in the left channel to pull Luton goalkeeper James Shea off his line before feeding Mahrez, who took a touch before powering the ball past Shea. The Foxes will have four days before their next friendly, a trip to MK Dons on Friday, followed by another away fixture at Wolverhampton on Sunday.

New Manchester City left-back Benjamin Mendy faces a race against time to make the Premier League opener at Brighton.

The 23-year-old, who joined the club from Monaco for a reported £52 million, arrived at City "a little bit injured" according to Pep Guardiola and his availability for the trip to the south coast hangs in the balance. Mendy missed the start of pre-season with his former club, and the problem, which is believed to be hamstring related, will keep him out for up-to three more weeks. Given the close proximity, and a lack of match-fitness, Guardiola is likely to plumb for another new signing – Danilo – at the Amex Stadium on 12 August. Ilkay Gundogan is another doubt although the injury-plagued midfielder, who is recovering from a serious knee ligament injury, is nearing a return: "If I had to put a figure on it, I would say at 70% [fit]."
