With Roberto Soldado finally signed and sealed the rumors have started circulating about Jermain Defoe's future with WBA mentioned.

A forward line of Jermain Defoe and Nicholas Anelka with Shane Long as a third forward would certainly be a solid recovery from the loss of Lukaku and the fading/presumed departure of Peter Odemwingie. With the Gareth Bale situation still up in the air and Adebayor still on the block Spurs are probably not quite ready to sell Defoe. Depending on what happens with those two players though, Defoe might be a strong late-window pick-up for WBA or another club like QPR.

After speculation linking him with a move away from the club this summer, Ashley Young has agreed to a three year extension at Manchester United.

With only this season remaining on his contract before the extension, there was talk that United might sell Young to a mid-table team so as not to lose him on a free at the end of the season. That speculation has been put to rest and a player who was very useful last season will remain at the club, presumably as a valuable squad player for what are likely to be the final three seasons of his top flight career. There aren't too many 34-year-old wingers starting in the Premier League and that's how old Young will be when this deal ends.

Norwich have reignited their interest in Dynamo Kiev striker Dieumerci Mbokani after the club slashed their initial valuation…

We know Norwich boss Alex Neil likes a bargain. The haggling over the price of Robbie Brady dragged on for weeks – although Norwich paid Hull’s £7 million valuation in the end. But Neil has his poker face on again, trying to secure the services of DR Congo international striker Dieumerci Mbokani. Norwich lodged an opening bid of £4.3m, which Dynamo Kiev dismissed valuing the 29-year-old at £8.5m. At that point the deal seemed dead, with Alex Neil picking up his chips and leaving the table. But Kiev chief Sergei Rebrov has since dropped the price to £6m, suggesting an agreement can be reached. Mbokani scored 13 goals in his first season with Kiev, following his £7.7m transfer from Anderlecht. But failed to hold down a first team spot last season and is keen to try his luck in the Premier League.

Crystal Palace new signing Connor Wickham made his debut just hours after putting pen to paper, but his strike partner limped off casting doubt over his selection for the weekend…

Alan Pardew gave a hint to the formation he is looking to play this season with the latest friendly at Dagenham. Palace started with two up front again in a traditional 4-4-2, not the more fluid 4-5-1 that brought success last season. Pardew could be experimenting of course, giving new signing Connor Wickham his debut in the central striking role alongside Frazier Campbell. It is thought Campbell has slipped behind Wickham, Patrick Bamford, Glenn Murray and (perhaps Fulham-bound) Dwight Gayle in the pecking order. So being forced off injured after barely ten minutes will do him no favors at all. Expect Pardew to play two strikers against teams Palace are expected to dominate, but revert to the counter attacking 4-5-1 against the better teams, particularly away from home…

Ryan Shawcross remains a doubt for this weekends’ opener at home to Liverpool as the Stoke skipper battles a persistent back problem which has hampered his pre-season.

Shawcross missed 6-weeks earlier this year due to the issue and the niggling injury has restricted the defender to just 65 minutes of friendly action against Brentford and now the 27 year-old will meet with a specialist amid fears he could require surgery. However there was better news regarding defensive team mate Marc Wilson - who limped out of Sundays’ defeat to FC Porto with an ankle problem - and winger Marko Arnautovic [thigh]. The pair are expected to be ready for game week one. Mark Hughes also hinted that Bojan Krkic is not ready for a start just yet although he has been pleased with the progress of his Spanish striker following his ACL rupture.

Joe Allen looks set to miss the trip to the Britannia this weekend after the Wales international limped out of last Sundays’ friendly win over Swindon Town with barely 12 minutes on the clock.

Allen was hoping to stake a claim for a place in the match-day squad against Stoke but the midfielder is now expected to be sidelined after tweaking his hamstring – a scan will confirm the extent of the problem. Any decision regarding the involvement of Christian Benteke this weekend is likely to be left until the last moment but his debut goal - a stunning strike - and overall performance pleased Rodgers who hinted he could get the nod despite not being 100% match fit. However the same cannot be said of summer signing Firmino who is still lacking sharpness according to Brendan - following his late return from the Copa America - which means the Brazilian can only hope for a place on the bench at very best.

Crystal Palace are sweating on the fitness of French midfielder Yohan Cabaye who limped out of Saturdays’ draw with Fulham due to a knock.

Cabaye suffered a dead leg during a frantic opening 15 minutes at Craven Cottage and although the 29 year-old was able to hobble his way through the first half he did not emerge for the restart. Alan Pardew remains hopeful that Cabaye will be ready but the Eagles boss can take nothing for granted "He's one we're going to have to look at, to make sure he's OK. I think there's a slender chance he might not be available." The news came just hours after Palace confirmed Julian Speroni will miss around a month because of a finger injury. His absence leaves Wayne Hennessey and Alex McCarthy to fight it out for the goalkeepers jersey at Carrow Road on Saturday.

Man City are getting mixed messages from Kevin de Bruyne, but are still yet to formally place a bid for the Belgian playmaker…

As a transfer ‘saga’ Man City’s pursuit of Kevin de Bruyne has perhaps overtaken that of Raheem Sterling, which had a happy ending. But is still someway short of Paul Pogba, which didn’t. Although no formal bid has been, the de Bruyne affair took another couple of twists this weekend with the Wolfsburg midfielder saying in The Sun newspaper that a return to England would be ‘tempting’. But his current manager Deiter Hecking insists that he will stay in the Bundesliga. Perhaps, de Bruyne’s positive comments were made before Man City’s first half horror show against Stuggart. And Hecking’s made after half an hour, when City were four goals down…

Problems are mounting for boss Roberto Martinez ahead of Everton’s opener with Watford, with injuries to several first team players…

Roberto Martinez has bullishly responded to speculation linking center-back John Stones to a move to Chelsea (or possibly Manchester United). Stones was impressive against Villareal before going off – as a precaution - following a slight knock on the ankle he had surgery on last season. Kevin Mirallas also picked up an ankle injury and Romelu Lukaku missed the match – again, a precaution – after pulling up in Everton’s previous friendly. And now it appears Gerard Deulofeu will miss this weekend’s match after picking up a hamstring injury. After a frustrating and uncertain summer Everton need a positive start. Attracting players and, of course, keeping current ones will not be any easier if they don’t hit the ground running…

Crystal Palace have confirmed the signing of Sunderland forward Connor Wickham for a fee in the region of £7 million…

Crystal Palace have added their fourth signing of the summer, agreeing a £7m fee for Sunderland forward Connor Wickham. The fee, which could rise to £9m with add-ons, looks better business for Sunderland than Palace based on Wickham’s goal return in his four seasons there. Just 15 strikes in 91 matches led to Wickham being mainly used as a left-sided attacker, rather than the central role he is expected to fill at Palace. His arrival looks to have pushed Dwight Gayle down the pecking order, who now looks set for a season-long loan move to Fulham. Wickham will partner, or compete with Chelsea starlet Patrick Bamford in the Palace attack.

Enner Valencia could miss up to three months with a knee and ankle injury.

Valencia hurt both his knee and ankle in West Ham's friendly last week and will miss significant time. He won't need surgery, which is a plus, but 12 weeks is a long time to miss at the beginning of the season. West Ham can't catch a break with injuries in the past few seasons and this one hurts as much as any they've suffered in recent years. Look for Diafra Sakho to step up while Valencia is out.

Roberto Martinez has confirmed that Kevin Mirallas and John Stones will be assessed after the pair were substituted against Villareal due to ankle injuries.

However the Toffees boss didn’t seem overly concerned post-match "I don’t expect it to be anything too serious" suggesting there withdrawal was more of a precaution. Romelu Lukaku was missing from Sundays’ testimonial [for Duncan Ferguson] but the striker was rested after feeling discomfort in his hamstring midweek while Gerard Deulofeu was another absentee despite early optimism that the Spanish winger would be fine following his recent thigh problem. Everton are already struggling with Tony Hibbert, Aidan McGeady, Mo Besic, Steven Pienaar and Darron Gibson out of the opener although they have been boosted by the return to fitness of Leighton Baines and Bryan Oviedo.
