Paul Scharner, apparently not interested in a relegation battle, has reportedly turned down a move back to the Premier League with Hull.

Scharner spent last season at Wigan on loan from Hamburg and apparently didn't enjoy playing first team football for a club bound for relegation. The player has turned down a move to join other Premier League journeymen at Hull in favor of keeping his family settled and likely not seeing any action with Hamburg's first team. Not a ringing endorsement of the Hull "project".

Adam Johnson got the opener for Sunderland, but Hull City clawed their way back to win 3-1 at the Stadium of light.

Hull conceded 29 seconds into the match on a sloppy giveaway at the back, but Gaston Ramirez equalized in the 33rd minute, James Chester got the winner in the 51st and Nikica Jelavic put the nail in the coffin in stoppage time to put Hull within striking distance of escaping relegation. Ramirez finished with a goal and an assist, giving manager Steve Bruce plenty to consider when Tom Huddlestone and Jake Livermore return from suspension. Hull are at home vs Leicester in a couple days while Sunderland travel to Aston Villa.

Bojan was at the center of a major turning point in the match between Stoke City and Everton when the referee awarded a penalty after he was brought down, and it would be Bojan himself that converted the penalty which led to the controversial 0-1 final.

Stoke played the Grinch today and really stole the presents away from Everton fans at Goodison Park. Their lone goal was awarded via a penalty chance that looked rather soft, especially when just moments earlier, Jonathan Walters appeared to have committed a much more egregious foul that many would say deserved a red card. Otherwise, the Toffees dominated the stat sheet in just about every way and should have come away with something. Instead, Stoke rise to a more comfortable mid-table position, one point ahead of Everton.

Brad Guzan earned his 100th appearance today when Aston Villa faced Swansea.

He becomes the 10th American to get 100 Premier League matches under his belt. Brad Friedel leads all Americans with 450. Guzan made a crucial error in the match when he failed to challenge Gylfi Sigurdsson's free-kick for the only goal of the match. Despite the error, Guzan remains Villa's number one option between the posts. He is also challenging Tim Howard for Team USA's starting goalkeeper spot for upcoming competitions.

Gylfi Sigurdsson scored a brilliant free-kick to give Swansea a 1-0 win over Aston Villa.

The goal came in the 13th minute after Jores Okore fouled Jefferson Montero on the edge of the box. It was the only goal of the game but it was a beautiful one. American goalkeeper Brad Guzan should probably have done better but Sigurdsson deserves credit for the curling strike. Villa pushed late to try and earn an equalizer but Lukasz Fabianski made two huge saves to keep them out. Swansea have been great in recent weeks and earned another win here in impressive fashion. They sit in seventh place and are keeping their European dreams alive.

Goodison Park is not a fun place to be right now following Everton's frustrating 0-1 loss to Stoke City.

The Toffees had been sputtering and this fixture looked to be ripe for a turnaround. Instead, one terrible scenario after another unfolded. Leighton Baines looked to be breaking away for a clear chance on goal when he was brought down from behind by Jonathan Walters but the referee would only issue a yellow card. Then just moments later, Bojan was brought down in what looked like a soft foul by James McCarthy and Stoke were awarded a penalty which Bojan converted. Then, just before halftime, Tim Howard came up limping and had to be replaced to begin the second frame. Meanwhile Everton were creating more than their share of chances, dominated possession, had more shots on targets, took more corners, but just could not for the life of them find the net. Roberto Martinez is a respected manager and Everton had big dreams entering this season having locked up Romelu Lukaku permanently, but something has gone wrong for the Toffees and their fans want things to change post haste.

There wasn't much to like for West Brom on Boxing Day but at least they have a goal from Ideye Brown to show for the visit of the Champions.

Things went downhill quickly for the Baggies who conceded goals in the 8th and 13th minutes against Manchester City. They conceded again in the 34th minute which effectively ended the match as a competitive fixture. Ideye Brown was introduced in the 67th minute for Silvestre Varela and scored 20 minutes after his introduction so at least there was something that Albion could salvage as good news from the day

Raheem Sterling led the line for Liverpool and helped the Reds to three much-needed points with the only goal of the match as they earned a 0-1 road win against Burnley.

It was one moment of magic from the Reds today but they will happily take the points even though their attack still has much to improve upon. Burnley were the better side in the first half and were at least equal to Liverpool over 90 minutes, but the one moment bit them. Phillipe Coutinho collected a loose ball as Pool pushed toward the Claret goal, and he flicked a smart pass to Sterling who used his pace to knife through the defense and dance around the keeper to finish smartly with his sixth league goal this season. Call it a coincidence, but the Reds first win since Week 14 against Leicester. Pool need to do better than to only collect wins against promoted sides and will face a tougher test against Swansea on Sunday.

Papiss Cisse wasn't good enough for the starting eleven but he scored Newcastle's only goal in their 3-1 Boxing Day loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Alan Pardew opted to start youngster Adam Armstrong at forward rather than Papiss Cisse and it didn't work out as Newcastle looked decidedly second best to the Red Devils on Boxing Day. Armstrong looked naive trying to cut a breakaway into the heart of the defense. Not only did it cut the attack short but the ball bounced to Wayne Rooney in midfield who initiated an attack that led to Manchester United's first goal. Starting Cisse over Armstrong might not have made a difference in the long run but Cisse did score a consolation goal in the 85th minute.

Christian Eriksen scored a beautiful curling free-kick to give Tottenham a 2-1 win over Leicester.

Spurs didn't look too impressive today but were able to grind out a 2-1 win over the Foxes. Harry Kane continued his hot form by scoring early on before Leicester equalized through Leo Ulloa. Eriksen then struck his free-kick in the 71st minute to win it for Spurs. Leicester pushed hard towards the end of the game and came extremely close to equalizing on a few occasions but Spurs were able to hold on through a good performance from Hugo Lloris.

David Silva continues his return to the line-up with his third goal in his last two matches as City eased past West Brom at the Hawthorns.

Manchester City seem to be coping just fine without a recognized forward available as they went ahead 3-0 over the Baggies before conceding a late Ideye Brown goal for the final 3-1 score line. City got an early opener from Fernando who pounced on a rebound in the 8th minute. Yaya Toure scored the second from the spot in the 13th minute after David Silva drew a penalty from Joleon Lescott. Finally, Silva scored with a classy strike across the face of Ben Foster's goal for City's third. The Brown goal in the 87th minute was a nice story for Brown but otherwise irrelevant unless you were hoping for a City clean sheet.

Wayne Rooney scored two and created the other as Manchester United raced to a 3-0 lead before letting Newcastle score late for a 3-1 final on Boxing Day.

Wayne Rooney was the story of the day on Boxing Day. For United's opener he picked up a clearance on his side of half field and drove forward. He got the ball to Juan Mata who served it in to Falcao who centered for Rooney who had continued his run. United's second saw Rooney score again before his long cross found Robin van Persie in the penalty area for United's third. Overall, it was a virtuoso performance for Rooney who appears at his best in the role Paul Scholes made his own at United.
