Wayne Routledge scored two goals against Romanian champions Petrolul Ploiesti to all but assure Swansea an aggregate win in their Europa Cup playoff.

There were lots of heroes between Routledge's two goals, Michu's goal and assist, Pablo Hernandez's assist and forcing of an own goal and Pozuelo's goal. It is also worth noting that Jonjo Shelvey retained his starting spot despite Jonathan De Guzman being available after recovering from a concussion. It will be interesting to see if Shelvey keeps that spot as De Guzman gains greater fitness after some enforced time off.

Newcastle have continued to rebuild their attack by going back to the French-attacking-midfielder well that proved so successful last time around.

The man who will be counted on to replace Yohan Cabaye's creativity in Newcastle's midfield also replaced Cabaye, as a substitute, in his first international appearance for France in the lead-up to the World Cup. An alternate on the French World Cup team, the diminutive Cabella brings goals - one in every four matches for Montpellier - as well as creativity to the table for the Magpies. He can play centrally or on either flank and has been effective off of a target forward as well. This appears to be another strong signing for Newcastle. When they eventually get to the transfer market, they seem to be getting it right these days.

West Bromwich Albion continues their squad makeover with the acquisition of Belgian left back Sebastien Pocognoli.

After years with a center back, Liam Ridgewell, holding down the left back spot at the Hawthorns, West Brom have gone in a different direction with Belgian left back Sebastien Pocognoli. The former Hanover 96 man is an adept crosser of the ball but isn't highly rated for his actual defense. He is also a bit on the combative side having had altercations with two teammates while on duty for his country in 2009. His new teammates will be hoping he has mellowed a bit.

Tottenham striker Emmanuel Adebayor has been diagnosed with malaria.

Not the ideal way to kick off pre-season training. Adebayor was admitted to hospital on Saturday with what Spurs describe as a "mild bout" of malaria and will be unable to return to training for at least a week. He will stay in England to recover while the club tour North America.

Juventus are making a £20 million bid to sign the Brazilian midfielder Paulinho from Tottenham Hotspur, according to The Telegraph.

Paulinho had a difficult World Cup following an up-and-down début season at White Hart Lane. The talented midfielder started brightly under AVB but suffered an injury last December and then lost his place in the Spurs team under Tim Sherwood on his return. When he did feature he often looked tired and that trend continued in Brazil as he lost his place in the starting XI after some weak performances. Paulinho will now earn a much needed break before returning to pre-season training and one would think he could work well in new manager's Maurcio Pochettino's standard system, but if Juventus come calling with a massive bid then it could be too good for the club and the player to turn down.

Daryl Janmaat's agent has tweeted that his client's move to Newcastle United will be completed tomorrow for a very reasonable €6 million.

Coming off of a World Cup campaign that increased his profile and value, you'd have expected an inflated price for Daryl Janmaat. Instead, Newcastle United continue to show exceptional acumen in the transfer market by selling Mathieu Debuchy for almost double what they paid only a year ago and buying relatively low on a highly-though-of young player in Janmaat. It seems likely that they'll get a couple of seasons of high quality play from the Dutch international and then sell him for another profit after Euro2016. Nice work by the Magpies.

Germany have won the 2014 FIFA World Cup with a late extra time goal from Mario Gotze.

The final scored was 1-0 in favor of Germany. Germany and Argentina both played well in the final, but the Germans proved to the better team. Chelsea's Andre Schurrle came on in the 30th minute to replace the injured Christoph Kramer and had a phenomenal match. Schurrle provided pace down the left hand side and the Argentine defense had trouble containing him. The move also allowed Mesut Ozil to play in his favorite position in the middle of the pitch. At the end, it was Schurrle who plays a magnificent ball to Mario Gotze, who chested the ball down and scored with a nice volley. The Germans were undoubtedly the best team in the tournament and fully deserve the victory.

A questionable penalty awarded to The Netherlands in the early going was converted by Robin van Persie and the Dutch would not look back as they finish World Cup 2014 in 3rd place with a 0-3 win over Brazil.

Arjen Robben's blazing speed was once again the fulcrum that created trouble for opponents. Thiago Silva brought him down in what replays show was just outside the box. It was a clear goal scoring chance but the referee pointed to the spot and issued Silva just a yellow card, getting the call all wrong. RVP converted the chance as he usually does and less than 15 minutes later, a poor clearance by David Luiz landed in the path of Daley Blind who blasted it home. The final goal of Louis van Gaal's career as manager of the Dutch national team came in the closing minutes and was scored by Georginio Wjnaldum.

Brazil could not recover from the blowout loss to Germany in the semi-finals as they were defeated by The Netherlands 0-3, ending their World Cup run in embarrassing fashion.

Part of the outcome today belongs to a few blown calls by the referee, but in the end, Brazil were beaten fairly by a Dutch side that showed their dominance on both sides of the ball. Oscar put in a decent shift and the hosts were not without their chances, but the key pass to give an attacker a clear shot on target was not to be had. Meanwhile, the defense showed a lack of cohesion that was evident in their semi-final drubbing. They finish the tournament by being outscored 10-1 and their streak of avoiding back-to-back losses at home of any variety, a record older than the actual Girl From Ipanema, comes to a bitter end.

Southampton have completed the signing of Italian striker Graziano Pelle from Feyenoord.

Pelle has established himself as a prolific scorer in Holland, scoring 55 goals in 65 games under current Southampton manager Ronald Koeman in the Eredivisie. Koeman has decided to bring his star man along for the Premier League ride and Pelle will have every opportunity to prove his worth. Southampton have no clear strikers and forward Jay Rodriguez is injured for the beginning of the season. Pelle can be a good fantasy choice for those looking outside of the ordinary, especially since he'll likely be available for a reduced price.

West Ham are reportedly interested in taking Chelsea winger Christian Atsu on loan as a boost to their attack.

With Joe Cole gone and West Ham struggling for goals last season, the Hammers have been making big improvements to their attack this summer and Atsu would be the icing on the cake. The young winger had a great World Cup and has been hyped up for the past few years as the future of Ghana. Chelsea have enough attacking midfielders on their books so they can afford to loan out Atsu if they think he'll benefit from the constant first team action. Jose Mourinho wants to use Atsu in pre-season matches before he decides whether to loan him out. Atsu's fantasy appeal would be exponentially higher at West Ham than at Chelsea due to playing time.

The inevitable has come to pass. Liverpool have officially announced the sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona.

With Suarez out the door there is a massive gap in Liverpool's exceptional attack from last season. There is a rumor circulating that they will attempt to fill that gap with Karim Benzema. Not exactly a like for like change but certainly not a bad consolation prize if it happens.
