ESPN's Adam Rittenberg reports that UMass has fired HC Mark Whipple.

It's not a huge surprise, or a surprise at all, really. Reports on Tuesday indicated that UMass was expected to part ways with the 61-year-old coach after completing a 4-8 season. Whipple has been with the program for five seasons at the FBS level, and he has a record of just 16-44 over that time. He did have success at the FCS level, winning a title with the program in 1998. It could be tough to draw a big-name coach to the school, so it wouldn't be a surprise if the Minutemen went with either a retread or outside-the-box hire.

Uncommitted five-star ATH Quavaris Crouch told the Washington Post that he'll play linebacker at whatever school he signs with.

Crouch is considered one of the very best prospects in the class -- at one point he was ranked as the top prospect by recruiting site Rivals -- and many believe his best position is running back. The 6-foot-2, 225-pound athlete will instead play linebacker, and he gave an interesting reason why. "I want to be smart about it," Crouch told the paper. "My passion is running back. I love to play running back. I love to score touchdowns. Realistically, I feel like linebacker is the best for me." In other words, Crouch believe his best chance at a big payday is playing linebacker, and we can't blame him. He's still deciding between schools like Clemson, Michigan, Alabama and Florida State.

Penn State redshirt senior QB Trace McSorley accepted an invitation to play in the Reese's Senior Bowl.

McSorley has battled some injuries this year, and his passing numbers have been disappointing with a 53.6 completion percentage and 15/6 TD/INT ratio in 2018. He's also one of the best "dual-threat" quarterbacks in college football, and he's led the Nittany Lions to Rose Bowl and Fiesta Bowls in the last two years; with another big bowl game possible. Performing well at the event would go a long way towards McSorley becoming a draftable quarterback.

WR Miami sophomore WR Jeff Thomas has been dismissed from the football team.

Wow. Thomas missed practice on Wednesday for "personal" reasons, but the Hurricanes stated that he was still part of the team despite rampant speculation that the sophomore wideout was leaving the program, with an early report indicating that Illinois could be a transfer target. Then this statement from head coach Mark Richt: "We have high standards for excellence, for conduct and for the commitment to team for all of the young men who wear our uniform, and we will not waver from those standards." Thomas is considered among the most talented sophomore wideouts in the country, and he could be a big get for whatever program he ends up at. He'll have to sit out 2019 unless he is awarded a hardship, and he'll have two more seasons of eligibility left.

Hawaii HC Nick Rolovich told reporters that the starting quarterback for Saturday's game against San Diego State will be a game-time decision.

Rolovich is deciding between sophomore QB Cole McDonald and freshman Chevan Cordeiro. McDonald started out the year as one of the nation's hottest quarterbacks. But since that magical September, he's gone into the tank. Cordeiro came on in relief of McDonald last week and led a furious fourth quarter rally to upend UNLV and guarantee a winning regular season record. One fascinating wrinkle to this decision involves the new NCAA redshirt rule. Cordeiro, a ballyhooed true freshman who played high school ball at nearby Saint Louis School, has played in three games this year. He can appear in one more and still redshirt in 2018. But if he appears in two more, he'll burn a year of eligibility. Including the bowl game, the Warriors have two games left. In other words: If Cordeiro doesn't appear in the SDSU game, he'll qualify for a redshirt this year.

Texas HC Tom Herman expects sophomore QB Sam Ehlinger (shoulder) to play against Kansas on Friday.

Ehlinger returned to practice as a full participant on Wednesday. He increased his workload to 40 throws during Texas’ last practice before traveling to Lawrence on Thanksgiving Day. Expect to see him out there with the starting lineup Friday.

Former Penn State senior LB Manny Bowen will transfer to Utah.

Bowen's rollercoaster ride of a year appears to have reached its final destination. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound linebacker was kicked off Penn State last November before being reinstated over the summer. But instead of playing out his senior year in Happy Valley, Bowen left the team a few weeks later (whether of his own accord or not we do not know). Bowen announced he would transfer in mid-October. He's set to graduate next month, which would mean he will have immediate eligibility with the Utes in 2019. When active, Bowen is absolutely a starting-caliber Power 5 linebacker. This flier makes a ton of sense for Utah. But Bowen figures to be on a very short leash.

Alabama senior RB Damien Harris (head) has cleared concussion protocol.

Alabama HC Nick Saban told the media Wednesday that he expects Harris to play against Auburn on Saturday. "He cleared, and he practiced yesterday," Saban said. "So, we hope, without setback, he’ll be OK." Harris suffered a "mild concussion" in The Citadel game. Harris won't have to shoulder a huge workload against the Tigers with Najee Harris and Joshua Jacobs around to spell him.

Miami (OH) redshirt senior RB Alonzo Smith ran for 207 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries in a 42-21 blowout victory over Ball State on Tuesday.

Smith and the RedHawks ran all over the Ball State defense to the tun of 368 yards in the rout. The three scores give the senior multiple touchdowns in three-of-four games, and he has found the end zone nine times on the season. This was the sixth with of the season for Miami (OH), so they're now eligible for a bowl game. If Buffalo loses this weekend, there's also a slim chance that they could play in the conference championship game.

LSU redshirt sophomore TE Thaddeus Moss underwent foot surgery.

Moss (6'3/240) had already been ruled out for the remainder of the season by mid-October. He did not end up playing in a game prior to his being nixed for the campaign. The redshirt sophomore has now required two surgeries on the same foot over the last calendar year. There has been no indication that Moss might be able to make it back for LSU's bowl game. Looking like an offseason of rehab.

In Tuesday's release of the College Football Playoff rankings, Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame and Michigan were ranked Nos. 1-4.

No change once more in the top four, but we did see some interesting movement further down in the rankings. While Ohio State remains at No. 10, same as a week ago, UCF has jumped them, moving up from No. 11 to No. 9 on the strength of their dominating win over Cincinnati -- coupled with OSU's near-loss to Maryland -- on Saturday. Filling out the remainder of the top-10 rankings, Georgia, Oklahoma, LSU and Washington State slot in at Nos. 5-8.

Football Scoop reports that should Purdue HC Jeff Brohm leave for another job, the program has already come up with a short list of replacement candidates.

Brohm is viewed by many as the top option to take over the vacant head-coaching position at Louisville. Should he leave, Troy's Neal Brown, Alabama's Butch Jones, Louisiana Tech's Skip Holtz, Clemson's Tony Elliott, Maryland's Matt Canada and Memphis' Mike Norvell are all reportedly being bandied about as possibilities to replace him. The name that sticks out like a sore thumb, here, would be Butch Jones, who has been working as an analyst at Alabama after being canned by Tennessee last autumn.
