Redshirt freshman Johnny Manziel has been named the Texas A&M starting QB by head coach Kevin Sumlin.

This is a somewhat surprising announcement, as redshirt sophomore Jameill Showers was expected to win the job, especially after Manziel was arrested in late June after handing police a fake ID following a fight. The Aggies start the season at Louisiana Tech, so Manziel should be able to give Sumlin's Air-Raid offense a fairly thorough test drive. "Johnny has performed the best at this stage and we will proceed until the season opener with him getting the first-team reps," Sumlin said. "My policy is simple really; the best player plays."

Miami QB coach Jon Richt said that redshirt sophomore QB Evan Shirreffs and redshirt junior QB Malik Rossier are currently leading the competition to start.

Richt explained that "as far as day to day, if we had to start right now, yeah, those two older guys are ready. They’ve been in the system for a year and a half." He noted that while highly-anticipated true freshman QB N'Kosi Perry possesses an "unbelievable talent base," Perry still understandably takes a little more time to process the field than the more experienced Shirreffs and Rossier.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Seth Emerson reports that Georgia senior CB Malkom Parrish broke his foot in practice.

Parrish sat out Wednesday's practice due to an undisclosed injury. Per Emerson, he will have to undergo surgery to repair a broken foot. There is no concrete timetable for his return, but this will likely keep him out of action for at least the next two weeks. Aaron Davis -- who took reps at corner, rather than his usual safety spot on Wednesday -- Tyrique McGhee and highly regarded true freshman Deangelo Gibbs could all potentially see work in place of Parrish during the regular season if this injury sidelines him into September. He was a 12-game starter a year ago.

BYU sophomore LB Francis Bernard (personal) is expected to redshirt during the coming season.

Bernard (6'0/235) is taking the redshirt due to a personal matter, but there is no further detail as to what that matter might be. His loss figures to be a difficult one to paper over -- Bernard registered 79 tackles (5.5 for loss) and three interceptions in 12 games last season. Matt Hadley has been moved from safety to linebacker to help shore up the position group.

Baylor HC Matt Rhule said that he will probably wait until the week of the season-opener against Liberty to name the starting quarterback.

"I just really like the camaraderie and competitiveness between Zach (Smith) and Anu (Solomon). I really believe iron sharpens iron. So we’re just going to keep playing it out," Rhule said. Smith and Arizona transfer Solomon have pulled ahead of true freshman Charlie Brewer over the first two weeks of camp, but beyond that, Rhule has offered no real hints as to what his lean might be.

USC HC Clay Helton called sophomore WR Michael Pittman Jr.'s ankle injury a "significant one."

"I don’t think it’s day-to-day, I think it’s going to take a couple of weeks," Helton said. Pittman (6'4/205) suffered a high right ankle sprain in practice on Tuesday while working in a one-on-one drill against CB Jack Jones and subsequently required a cart to exit the practice field. X-rays taken after the injury revealed no structural damage, but Pittman will need some time to rest up nonetheless.

Texas senior TE Andrew Beck (foot) is expected to miss 6-8 weeks.

Beck fractured his foot during practice on Wednesday. He had been in line for starting duties, but given his current timetable, the 6-foot-3, 253-pounder is going to miss time in September and possibly even October. Syracuse transfer Kendall Moore could see a closer look with Beck down for the count.

Duke junior DB Jeremy McDuffie suffered a fractured thumb on Saturday.

McDuffie (5'11/185) underwent surgery to repair the fracture on Tuesday. Blue Devils HC David Cutcliffe said that he expects the 5-foot-11, 185-pound McDuffie to be able to return in "fairly short order." He could still potentially suit up for the team's season-opening tilt against N.C. Central on September 2. Sports Illustrated's Bruce Feldman hears from some around the program that McDuffie could potentially develop into Duke's best defender this season.

Ole Miss and Louisville will play in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in 2021.

This, per FBSSchedules.com, who learned of the matchup through an open-records request. There is still apparently some flexibility as to when this game will be played, with Saturday, August 28, 2021, Saturday, September 4, 2021 and Sunday, September 5, 2021 all possible options. Louisville and Ole Miss have never played before.

Florida sophomore T Jake Fruhmorgen transferred to Baylor.

Fruhmorgen (6'5/290) initially transferred to Florida from Clemson in June, but did not take part in any workouts with the Gators. It was reported shortly after his initial transfer that he planned on walking away from football altogether. Whether that is still the case remains to be seen. Should he decide to stick it out at Baylor, he would have to sit out the 2017 season to satisfy NCAA transfer regulations and would have two years eligibility remaining starting in 2018. He started eight games for the Tigers last season.

UCLA HC Jim Mora does not expect junior QB Josh Rosen to leave for the draft after the season.

"My firm belief is that he will not leave ... as we sit here right now, I can really honestly say I don’t think he’s going to leave," Mora said. Rosen has the potential to be a top-five draft pick if things break right this season. We've heard many a-coach wax poetic about how their players will stay only for said players to leave when given the opportunity. Stay tuned.

FAU senior WR John Franklin III will not be transitioning back to quarterback with the Owls.

Franklin announced his transfer from Auburn to FAU on Tuesday. Up until the spring, he had been working as a quarterback. The Tigers subsequently moved him to wide receiver. He'll be sticking at the position with the Owls rather than attempt a quarterbacking rebirth. Early reports from Auburn camp this month had Franklin struggling in the receiving game, but if he can get his feet under him, FAU offers a far more pass-heavy attack than the Tigers. There is opportunity there if he can take advantage.
