Maryland senior SS/LB Kenny Tate is close to returning to the practice field after suffering a left knee injury during preseason work.

Tate has been working with the scout team but head coach Randy Edsall believes he will go full speed leading up to the West Virginia game. The senior has a history of season ending injuries, so hopefully we will see him on the field, and stay on it, soon.

UCLA received a verbal commitment from four-star 2017 CB Elijah Gates.

Gates had been receiving plenty of interest from Oregon -- HC Willie Taggart gave him a house call over the weekend -- but UCLA had their hooks in for far longer and that long game has paid off for the Bruins. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound Gates ranks as Scout.com's No. 111 overall prospect in the 2017 class, with outlet analyst Greg Biggins writing that he is "a physical player who plays with a nice edge to him, has good short area quickness and closes well on the football." Biggins calls him an "instinctive corner."

Multiple outlets are reporting that Cal will hire former Fresno State HC Tim DeRuyter to serve as defensive coordinator.

DeRuyter was fired by Fresno State in late October after his crew had worked out to a pitiful 1-7 record. They went 3-9 under DeRuyter's watch the previous season. While his first head-coaching gig at the FBS level was a dismal one, he has spent extensive time as a defensive coordinator, having previously served in that capacity with Texas A&M (2010-2011), Air Force (2007-2011), Nevada (2005), Ohio (1995-1998, 2002-2004) and Navy (1999-2000). Since joining Cal as Sonny Dykes' replacement earlier this month, new HC Justin Wilcox has now brought on two coordinators with previous head-coaching experience in OC Beau Baldwin and DC DeRuyter.

South Carolina four-star 2017 verbal S commit Hamsah Nasirildeen flipped his pledge to Florida State.

Pity for South Carolina, as Nasirildeen would have represented a jewel in the recruiting crown of HC Will Muschamp. As is, the 6-foot-5, 210-pound corner will instead link up with Jimbo Fisher's crew in Tallahassee. He had been committed to South Carolina since August, but that was a loose pledge, as he subsequently took an official visit to the Seminoles in October. In the final rankings release by Rivals prior to National Signing Day, Nasirildeen slotted in at a cushy No. 63.

The Michigan team will travel to Rome in April for spring practices.

The NCAA just passed a rule to prohibit team travel during vacation periods -- a seeming reaction to Wolverines HC Jim Harbaugh's decision to bring Michigan down to Florida last spring -- but that will not be implemented until August. One for the road, then. According to a release, they will be taking their Rome trip "toward the end of winter semester in April." Harbaugh and company will use three of their allotted 15 practices while in Rome and plan on using the facilities of the AS Roma soccer team.

Bovada listed Oklahoma redshirt senior QB Baker Mayfield as the favorite to win the 2017 Heisman Trophy at 11/2.

Louisville QB Lamar Jackson, who won the Heisman this past season on the strength of a brilliant campaign as both a runner and thrower, doesn't even follow Mayfield on the board. Instead, Ohio State QB J.T. Barrett comes in at 6/1, with Jackson slotting in at 7/1. Barrett's going to need to improve on a wobbly 2016 season if he is to have any shot of actually winning the award. Other contenders of note: USC QB Sam Darnold (9/1), Penn State RB Saquon Barkley and QB Trace McSorley (10/1) and Washington QB Jake Browning (10/1).

Browns HC Hugh Jackson says he won't hold Clemson QB Deshaun Watson's decision not to play in the Senior Bowl against him.

Cleveland reportedly asked Watson to participate, but Watson rebuffed them, citing the long season that had just concluded. "There are going to be other guys that are not participating either, so I won't hold it against him," Jackson, coaching the South team, said. "I don't think that's the right thing to do. He's still a draftable player, there's still a process we have to go through to evaluate him and see if he can fit here with the Cleveland Browns.'' Jackson admitted he was disappointed when he first learned that Watson declined the invitation. "I think he's a high-character guy,'' Jackson said. "I think he's made of the right stuff. I don't think there's anything malicious about his decision. I just think he's like a lot of guys who have made this decision to do what's best for them." The Browns hold the No. 1 and No. 12 overall picks.

An AFC scout says Miami TE David Njoku is Bubba Franks with better athleticism.

"He's a more athletic Bubba Franks," said the scout. "He's big and athletic. He can run routes and block at the point of attack. Plus, he has some dog (nastiness/aggressiveness) in him. ... I would take him high. I love the kid!" NFL.com's Daniel Jeremiah ranks the 6-foot-4, 245-pound Njoku as one of the Draft's 15-best overall prospects. "You rarely see a big tight end move with that kind of suddenness, which makes him a rare find at the position," wrote his colleague Bucky Brooks. "As a pass-catcher, Njoku displayed strong hands and outstanding tracking ability. He easily adjusted to off-target tosses and expanded the strike zone for quarterbacks with his length and leaping ability." Brooks loved Njoku's blocking ability, too, and said he could "blossom into a Martellus Bennett-like playmaker as a Y tight end."

Arkansas redshirt sophomore QB Ricky Town transferred to Ventura College.

The former four-star prospect originally committed to Alabama before decommitting and signing with USC in 2015. The 6-foot-3, 214-pound Town transferred to Arkansas before that season even began, in August 2015. After a pair of years on the bench, he's on the move again. Once he plays out the 2017 season, Town will have two years of eligibility left for a potential return to the FBS.

Ohio State redshirt senior QB J.T. Barrett says the offensive coaching changes at Ohio State factored into his decision to return to campus.

"Change is not always bad. I think it was needed," he said. Buckeyes HC Urban Meyer replaced Ed Warinner and Tim Beck with former Indiana coach Kevin Wilson and NFL assistant Ryan Day. Barrett indicated that adding new offensive coaches was a positive because "sometimes we get set in our ways." He considered the staff changes as he pondered whether to enter the NFL draft. "That was part of it, just trying to make sure that if I was to come back, it was something I was going to do that was best for me and for me to grow as a quarterback," Barrett said. Barrett threw for 2,555 yards, ran for 845 and logged 33 total touchdowns in 2016.

Former Tennessee senior RB Jalen Hurd visited Cal over the weekend.

Hurd left the Volunteers program on Oct. 31 citing injuries and offensive scheme as the reason he was leaving Knoxville. Some thought he may opt into the Draft, but Hurd's name was not on the NFL's list of players granted eligibility released on Friday. With former Wisconsin DC Justin Wilcox having taken over the Golden Bears program, getting a bell cow back like Hurd would be a boon. Hurd has also expressed interest in shifting to tight end. He's a great receiver.

Rotoworld's Josh Norris believes Troy T Antonio Garcia is the top player attending the Senior Bowl at the start of the week.

It is a huge week for the Troy left tackle. He is not currently listed among the top offensive lineman in this draft, but Norris believes that changes this week. He will face off against premiere edge rushers play after play. Garcia's tape against Clemson is one of the best in this class, and his other games are on that same level. Garcia might shine as a pass protector, but he also loves to finish runs with an aggressive mentality.
