On third downs this season, Texas A&M starting freshman QB Johnny Manziel is 14-of-15 passing, converting 10 of those for first downs and three for touchdowns.

At times, Manziel has looked outstanding, using his blend of pocket movement and arm talent to keep plays alive and convert opportunities. Perhaps most important of all, Manziel has been included on seven touchdowns but has yet to throw an interception. The running game has weakened around the freshman, but he seems content on carrying the load in both phases for now.

Duke junior DB Jeremy McDuffie suffered a fractured thumb on Saturday.

McDuffie (5'11/185) underwent surgery to repair the fracture on Tuesday. Blue Devils HC David Cutcliffe said that he expects the 5-foot-11, 185-pound McDuffie to be able to return in "fairly short order." He could still potentially suit up for the team's season-opening tilt against N.C. Central on September 2. Sports Illustrated's Bruce Feldman hears from some around the program that McDuffie could potentially develop into Duke's best defender this season.

Ole Miss and Louisville will play in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in 2021.

This, per FBSSchedules.com, who learned of the matchup through an open-records request. There is still apparently some flexibility as to when this game will be played, with Saturday, August 28, 2021, Saturday, September 4, 2021 and Sunday, September 5, 2021 all possible options. Louisville and Ole Miss have never played before.

Florida sophomore T Jake Fruhmorgen transferred to Baylor.

Fruhmorgen (6'5/290) initially transferred to Florida from Clemson in June, but did not take part in any workouts with the Gators. It was reported shortly after his initial transfer that he planned on walking away from football altogether. Whether that is still the case remains to be seen. Should he decide to stick it out at Baylor, he would have to sit out the 2017 season to satisfy NCAA transfer regulations and would have two years eligibility remaining starting in 2018. He started eight games for the Tigers last season.

UCLA HC Jim Mora does not expect junior QB Josh Rosen to leave for the draft after the season.

"My firm belief is that he will not leave ... as we sit here right now, I can really honestly say I don’t think he’s going to leave," Mora said. Rosen has the potential to be a top-five draft pick if things break right this season. We've heard many a-coach wax poetic about how their players will stay only for said players to leave when given the opportunity. Stay tuned.

USC sophomore WR Michael Pittman Jr. (ankle) is looking doubtful for the season-opener against Western Michigan.

Pittman suffered a high left ankle sprain in practice on Tuesday and subsequently needed the assistance of a cart to leave the practice field. He was unable to put any weight on the foot. While X-rays came back negative and he has not officially been ruled out for the opener, both the Los Angeles Daily News and Rivals believe that the injury could potentially keep him on the sideline come September 2. We should have a more clear idea as to his availability in the next week or so.

FAU senior WR John Franklin III will not be transitioning back to quarterback with the Owls.

Franklin announced his transfer from Auburn to FAU on Tuesday. Up until the spring, he had been working as a quarterback. The Tigers subsequently moved him to wide receiver. He'll be sticking at the position with the Owls rather than attempt a quarterbacking rebirth. Early reports from Auburn camp this month had Franklin struggling in the receiving game, but if he can get his feet under him, FAU offers a far more pass-heavy attack than the Tigers. There is opportunity there if he can take advantage.

Former Oklahoma freshman QB Chris Robison, who was dismissed two weeks ago, said he is transferring to FAU.

Robison was a highly regarded recruit who instantly ran into trouble at Oklahoma, leading to a dismissal before playing a single game for the Sooners. Kiffin's strategy is obvious, bring in former high profile recruits until he can leave his mark on recruiting classes. Robison likely will need to sit out the season.

Sports Illustrated's Bruce Feldman reports that the Penn State Board of Trustees will discuss a contract extension for HC James Franklin this week.

There have been rumblings of an extension for Franklin throughout the offseason, with AD Sandy Barbour essentially confirming at the beginning of July that a new deal was in the works. Franklin and the Nittany Lions are coming off an 11-3 season and enter 2017 with sky-high expectations.

West Virginia suspended sophomore WR Marcus Simms for the season-opener against Virginia Tech.

"While every case is unique and discipline imposed is based on varying factors, this suspension is warranted," said HC Dana Holgorsen. "It is my hope that Marcus works hard to fulfill his obligation as a member of our community and as a member of our football program." Simms (6'0/196) was arrested on charges of DUI and driving on a revoked license early Sunday morning after being initially pulled over for a broken taillight. He was expected to take on a bigger role in the offense this season after logging a 6-95-1 receiving line as a true freshman. West Virginia is looking mighty thin at receiver at this juncture.

Kentucky redshirt senior T Cole Mosier will miss the 2017 season due to a torn ACL.

Mosier (6'6/342) suffered the severe knee injury during the team's first scrimmage over the weekend. In a statement, HC Mark Stoops said that the redshirt senior "helped set the example of hard work that is the theme of this program, as he came in as a walk-on and earned a scholarship." This past season, Mosier started 10 games, missing three due to injury. With his collegiate career ended by this injury, sophomore T Landon Young is expected to start at left tackle for the coming season.

Wisconsin and Notre Dame announced that they will play a series split between Lambeau Field and Solider Field for 2020 and 2021.

Wisconsin will be the "home team" when the two teams tango at Lambeau on October 3, 2020, while Notre Dame will return ostensible hosting honors at Soldier Field on September 25, 2021. The two squads have played 16 times (Notre Dame holds an 8-6-2 series edge), but none since 1964.
