Arkansas head coach John L. Smith indicated that junior RB Knile Davis would be a bigger part of the offensive gameplan Saturday against Kentucky.

"He's had a much better week than he had a week ago (in practice)," Smith said. "We're looking forward to (him playing more) and certainly hope that." Davis only carried the ball four time last week against Auburn, and Smith attributes the lack of touches to the junior's seven fumbles on the season. We attribute it to fellow back Dennis Johnson being the better player.

On the question of whether Louisville junior QB Lamar Jackson is a first-round pick, Draft Analyst's Tony Pauline wrote: "Yes, but I as of right now I think he’ll be overdrafted due to the demand for quarterbacks."

Pauline likes Jackson's tools but believes he needs major work. "Jackson is tremendously athletic, elusive and has a rifle arm," he wrote. "He can make all the throws and has enough arm strength to power the ball through tight windows or drive deep passes. Jackson easily eludes pass rushers behind the line of scrimmage to buy time or picks up big chunks of yardage carrying the ball." The issues? Size/thin frame (6'3/205) and accuracy. "All too often Jackson delivers wild passes out to the flanks and has open receivers working hard to come away with the reception," Pauline wrote. "He must improve his passing fundamentals and polish his passing game before he’ll be ready to step under center on Sundays, but Jackson has great potential."

Oregon HC Willie Taggart declared redshirt senior DT Scott Pagano (foot) was ahead of schedule in his recovery.

After transferring from Clemson to Oregon in mid-April, the Ducks' medical staff found that Pagano needed to undergo foot surgery for the break he suffered in November while a member of the Tigers. "He’s ahead of schedule right now. I don’t like putting certain weeks on guys because everybody heals differently," Taggart said. Taggart could not guarantee that Pagano would be able to play in the 2017 opener.

Utah redshirt senior WR Darren Carrington II has been cleared and admitted to the university.

Carrington will be out on the practice field with his new team when summer camp opens Friday night. Carrington was booted off the Oregon football team by new head coach Willie Taggart following a DUI charge on July 1 (the receiver pleaded not guilty on Monday). "It’s always a tough decision when you talk about a player that you’re going to add to your program potentially that has a checkered past," HC Kyle Whittingham said Thursday. "You’ve got to make a decision based on all the information you can gather, based on the athletes’ attitude. … I feel, in this case, that it was the right thing to do to give Darren another opportunity." Carrington (career 112-1,919-15 line at UO) figures to lead Ute receivers in touches this fall if he can stay on the field.

LSU coaches are uncertain if junior edge rusher Arden Key will be available for the season opener against BYU and won't make the conclusion until late August.

In fact, Key has basically been ruled out for the first half of fall camp. It is a shoulder injury that is slowing down Key, and he missed a bulk of the offseason with the ailment. For as much acclaim as his play has drawn, this storyline will absolutely be monitored and brought up during draft season.

Arizona State head coach Todd Graham hinted at senior RB Kalen Ballage seeing 80 plays per game.

Ballage split carries with Demario Richard last season (126 to 155 carries), but beat writer Doug Haller notes it is clear the team wants to get Ballage more involved. "Both those guys have great hands, but one of the things with Kalen, he is really a dynamic receiver," Graham said. "He can really do some things out of the backfield and really even as a slot receiver." Ballage could be the breakout performer in all of college football. Ballage also has a background as an edge rusher.

Texas A&M HC Kevin Sumlin called UCLA junior QB Josh Rosen the best quarterback in the country.

"He's not only a guy with great arm talent, he's very smart," Sumlin said. He spoke specifically to what he saw from Rosen when the Bruins tangoed with the Aggies in last year's season-opener, explaining, "We hit him a bunch. The game was over and he got up, came back out there and put them back in with a chance to win the game and put it into overtime." In the game in question, the then-sophomore gunslinger threw for 343 yards while tossing one touchdown and three interceptions (the Aggies led for most of the game before Rosen tightened things up). We are jazzed to see what Rosen can do coming back from the shoulder injury which cost him a large chunk of the 2016 season. He will get that party started against Texas A&M (again) in a spotlight Sunday game on September 3.

Nevada HC Jay Norvell named redshirt junior QB David Cornwell the starting quarterback.

"David’s the starting quarterback right now and he’ll have to compete and earn that spot throughout training camp and if there’s reason for him not to be we’ll address (it)," Norvell said. He cited Cornwell's performance in the spring as one reason he currently sits at the top of the depth chart -- the Alabama transfer completed 22-of-32 passes for 302 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the team's spring game (all in the first half at that). He has yet to make a start at the collegiate level, but if he can take advantage of his opportunity, he could potentially post big numbers during the coming season in OC Matt Mumme's Air Raid.

Former Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze said his family and church have helped him deal with the firestorm surrounding his resignation.

"God is good, even in difficult times," Freeze said. "Wonderful wife and family, and that’s my priority." Freeze resigned last Thursday after it became known that least one call from his university-issued cell phone was placed to an escort service. He claimed it was a misdial, but Ole Miss AD Ross Bjork responded by saying that "further vetting of Freeze’s phone records disclosed a ‘pattern of conduct’ that led the school administration to confront Freeze this week" and that the "moral turpitude" clause in Freeze’s contract would have been invoked in a firing had Freeze not stepped down.

Stanford redshirt junior QB Keller Chryst (knee) is on track to participate in most drills when the Cardinal open camp Monday.

Chryst suffered the knee injury against North Carolina in the Sun Bowl. "He's right on schedule, if not a little bit ahead," coach David Shaw said. "We're going to be smart with him in training camp, very cautious with him, but he's already doing full-speed dropbacks, he's already throwing with the guys. We'll keep him out of team stuff for a while." Chryst threw for 905 yards, 10 touchdowns and two interceptions last season. He'll compete with K.J. Costello, Ryan Burns and five-star true frosh Davis Mills for the starting gig next month. Stanford opens on Aug. 26 against Rice in Sydney, Australia.

Former Alabama redshirt junior DT O.J. Smith transferred to Minnesota.

Smith, a 2014 Under Armour All-American, was a three-star member of Alabama’s 2014 recruiting class. He'll have to sit out this season. In 2018, he'll have one year of eligibility to use.

USC dismissed redshirt senior K Matt Boermeester.

"Boermeester… won’t return because of a student code of conduct issue," the football program wrote in its preseason notes. The program indefinitely suspended Boermeester in early February, reportedly because of an incident involving the placekicker’s ex-girlfriend. Boermeester hit 75-percent of his 25 field goal attempts last year, as well as all but one of his 54 point after tries. Michael Brown will now take over at kicker.
