Oregon junior DB Avery Patterson insinuated that the Ducks defensive gameplan for Saturday's game against USC revolves around stopping the run.

"Their run game helps out their passing game a lot," Patterson said. "If they get their run game going like they did last year it could cause some problems for us." The Trojans rushed for 137 yards in their meeting last season, but more importantly a potent running attack opens up the play action passing game.

Michigan State hired former Lions executive Sheldon White to serve as a program consultant.

White had served the Lions faithfully in a variety of capacities -- including interim general manager and vice president of pro personnel -- for the past 19 years, but was let go this offseason. In a statement, he said, "Michigan State has a great program and I’m looking forward to joining in and giving whatever insight I can provide. Anywhere I can help out and wherever Coach Dantonio needs me to go, that’s where I’ll be."

BYU formally notified the Big 12 that it is interested in joining the conference.

While BYU would be open to potentially discussing a football-only agreement with the Big 12, AD Tom Holmoe told ESPN that the school's preference would be to become a full member of the conference. "We're obviously open to listening to what they want to do. We're going to go through this process with an open mind to listen to what they have to say," Holmoe said. He believes his university is in a strong position, here, noting that "[t]he criteria they list fit us well." In an anonymous ESPN poll of Big 12 coaches regarding expansion preferences, BYU and Houston were tagged as the most desirable programs.

Louisville senior LB Trevon Young (hip) will take a medical redshirt for the 2016 season.

"[Young] was really stressing out about trying to come back for this season," HC Bobby Petrino told 93.9 The Ville, "and he just got to a point where he didn't better for a while. So I think it's been a relief to him to know that he's redshirting." The 6-foot-4, 229-pounder is recovering from a debilitating hip fracture and dislocation suffered against Texas A&M during December's Music City Bowl. He subsequently underwent surgery. Last season, Young recorded 32 tackles (10 for loss), 8.5 sacks, an interception and two forced fumbles.

Uncommitted four-star 2017 LB Jacob Phillips will take official visits to Oregon, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Alabama and LSU.

Phillips will take an official visit to Oregon when they host UC-Davis on September 3, Oklahoma when they host ULM on September 10, Notre Dame when they host Michigan State on September 17, Alabama when they host Kent State on September 24 and LSU when they host Missouri on October 1. Rivals recruiting analyst Woody Wommack notes that the Sooners should be considered the front-runner for the 6-foot-3, 231-pounder's commitment at this juncture. Oregon is the only school in that bunch not to receive an unofficial visit. Wommack colleague Nick Krueger noted early in the summer that Phillips' "competitive nature combined with his size" helped turn him into a favorite of coaches during the offseason camp circuit.

Florida State's contingent at the ACC Kickoff has not shed any light on their quarterback starter for 2016.

Dalvin Cook did tell reporters he believes the Seminoles are good enough to beat Clemson this coming season (he noted that they were "just a few plays away" in 2015), but who might be leading the charge against the Tigers on October 29 is another question. HC Jimbo Fisher said that this summer, players in offseason workouts would tell him that redshirt senior QB Sean Maguire might perform better one day, only for redshirt freshman QB Deondre Francois to come out on top in the next session. FOX Sports' Bruce Feldman speculated in mid-June that Francois would overtake Maguire "sooner [rather] than later."

ACC commissioner John Swofford indicated that the NBA's decision to pull the All-Star Game from Charlotte will have no bearing on the ACC Championship Game.

Adam Silver and the NBA are backing off on plans to play the 2017 All-Star Game in Charlotte due to North Carolina House Bill 2, a law which could be seen as limiting anti-discrimination protections for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. While the ACC has yet to take that step for its conference title game, played annually in Charlotte at the end of the season, Swofford said that the conference would reevaluate matters in October. "Right now what our schools want to do is to see how this plays out and where it ends up," he explained, "because it's still in process to one degree or another and the courts may well ultimately decide that."

Arkansas redshirt senior RB Kody Walker squatted 700 lbs on Thursday.

The achievement might be even more impressive considering Walker broke his right foot during a practice session in mid-April. He was fully cleared in June. The Razorbacks lost both Alex Collins and Jonathan Williams to the NFL, along with quarterback Brandon Allen and tight end Hunter Henry. The Razorbacks will basically be fielding an entirely new set of skill players this season, and Walker should be a productive member of the backfield.

The Ivy League has volunteered to test moving kickoffs to the 40-yard line during the 2016 season.

Touchbacks will also line up at the 20-yard line. Normally, teams kick off at the 35-yard line and touchbacks are taken at the 25-yard line. For years, some have suggested kickoffs could be completely eliminated in the future, as it is viewed as the most dangerous series in football. The Ivy League could be viewed as "progressive" in adopting rule changes, as they have banned tackling in practice.

Virginia Tech HC Justin Fuente indicated that redshirt junior RB Marshawn Williams (knee) is expected to enter August camp 100% healthy.

Williams' last two seasons have been cut short due to a pair of serious knee injuries. He tore his left ACL in November of 2014 and subsequently underwent surgery, then was forced to undergo a second surgery on that same knee after re-injuring it last October. Rivals ranked the 5-foot-11, 229-pounder as the 29th best running back in the country for the 2014 cycle. In his nine healthy games during the 2014 season, Williams managed 475 yards on the ground at 3.8 YPC while scoring four touchdowns. He could see backup work behind Travon McMillian this coming season, assuming he can maintain his health.

The ACC and ESPN announced a 20-year agreement for a future ACC Network set to launch by August, 2019.

No surprise here, as ESPN's Brett McMurphy sort of stole his own network's thunder by reporting on the agreement earlier this week. The deal will run through the 2035-2036 academic year. While the ACC Network won't have its proper launch until 2019, they will be starting up their digital platform this autumn. That is expected to show in the neighborhood of 600 live events. The television network will carry upwards of 1,300 when it lurches to life in three years. Also of note, if Notre Dame were to opt out of independence in the next 20 years, they would be contracted to join the ACC.

In an anonymous ESPN poll of Big 12 coaches, Houston and BYU were the most favored candidates to join via expansion.

Each of the 10 coaches in the Big 12 were asked by the Worldwide Leader to name their two preferred expansion candidates. And apparently they had Cougars on their minds, as both Houston and BYU received five votes apiece to pace the field. That pair was followed up by Cincinnati and Memphis (four votes each), with Colorado State and UCF rounding out the proceedings with solitary votes. All of these teams outside of Colorado State and BYU ply their trade in the AAC. If one of them were to eventually opt to join the Big 12 (or any other conference, for that matter), they would have to provide 27 months' notice and a $10 million exit fee.
