ESPN's Adam Rittenberg reports that Western Kentucky's Jeff Brohm is expected to be the leading candidate to land the Cincinnati head coaching opening.

Rittenberg notes that Cincy will have to fend off two Power 5 schools, Purdue and Baylor, for Brohm's services -- assuming the coach decides to relocate at all (he could have last winter and didn't). Rittenberg goes on to write that Air Force coach Troy Calhoun and Ohio State defensive coordinator Luke Fickell are also candidates for the Bearcats, while Buckeyes assistant Kerry Coombs "could get a look as he has extensive roots in the Cincinnati area."

Alabama OC Lane Kiffin will stay at the school through the Playoffs.

"People talk about next year," he said, "but we have a lot of work to do." Kiffin is reportedly a prime candidate for openings as Houston's head coach and LSU's offensive coordinator. ESPN's Brett McMurphy previously reported that Kiffin will interview on Sunday for the Cougars' head-coaching vacancy. Last week, HC Nick Saban told the media that Kiffin was "absolutely" ready to be a head coach again. "Those are signs of tremendous maturity as a coach who is not just committed to a system but is committed to doing things that he has to help players be successful," Saban said. "I think he's proven when he was a head coach he had a reasonably good amount of success -- much more than I think he gets credit for -- and he's done a phenomenal job in the three years he's been with us."

ESPN reports that 5-7 Mississippi State will play Miami (Ohio) in the St. Petersburg Bowl.

The Bulldogs (5-7), one of three sub-six-win teams granted bowl eligibility based on its Academic Progress Rate rankings, was the last of 80 teams to earn a bowl berth, per the report. Most bowl bids have not yet been announced. We'll receive the dance card on Sunday afternoon.

Tommy Tuberville stepped down as Cincinnati's head coach.

The Bearcats had back-to-back nine-win seasons in 2013 and 2014 but fell of a bit in 2015 and then went 4-8 this season, winning just one American Athletic Conference game. Tuberville had a 85-40 record (52-30 SEC) at Auburn from 1999-2008. Football Scoop is reporting that Western Michigan's P.J. Fleck and Troy's Neal Brown are possible candidates for the Cincinnati job. We're big fans of both.

Clemson junior QB Deshaun Watson completed 23-of-34 passes for 288 yards, three touchdowns and an interception in Saturday's 42-35 win over Virginia Tech in the ACC Championship Game.

In a rare change of pace, Watson also chipped in with 85 yards rushing and two rushing touchdowns. His ground statistics have been noticeably muted for most of the season. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Heisman candidate entered Saturday's game with just 439 yards rushing and four scores over the course of 12 contests completed, this after he gouged opposing defenses for 1,105 yards and 12 rushing touchdowns in 15 games a year ago. With his five total touchdowns on Saturday, Watson has now accounted for 43 of them. He figures to have a busy month ahead of him, with a potential Heisman trip to New York and a Playoff showing at the end of December. And then, no rest for the weary, it will be on to draft preparation for the star quarterback.
Dec 4 - 12:31 AM

Wisconsin senior RB Corey Clement rushed for 164 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries in Saturday's 38-31 loss to Penn State in the Big Ten Championship Game.

While Clement put forth several impressive runs -- including a 67-yard scoring run around the left edge in the first quarter -- he will be haunted by one play late. With Wisconsin down seven and facing a fourth-and-short late in the fourth quarter, the 5-foot-11, 227-pound senior took the carry and tried to find wiggle room for the necessary gain. It was not to be, though, as Penn State played his dive perfectly and held him short of the line to gain. The Nittany Lions proceeded to run out the clock. This loss unofficially knocks Wisconsin out of Playoff contention.
Dec 4 - 12:20 AM

Penn State redshirt sophomore QB Trace McSorley was brilliant in Saturday's 38-31 win over Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship Game, throwing for 384 yards and four touchdowns.

McSorley was nothing short of phenomenal in this one, helping the Nittany Lions to withstand an early flurry of punches from the Badgers via a monster comeback from down 28-7 midway through the second quarter. The 6-foot, 195-pounder showed beautiful touch and placement on multiple passes, including a 70-yard scoring toss to Saeed Blacknall early in the third quarter. McSorley averaged a stellar 12.3 YPA in the win. His performance on Saturday boosted him to single-season school records for both passing yardage (3,360 yards) and passing touchdowns (25).
Dec 4 - 12:05 AM

San Diego State senior RB Donnel Pumphrey rushed for 110 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries in Saturday's 27-24 win over Wyoming in the Mountain West Championship Game.

Pumphrey and backfield buddy Rashaad Penny both surpassed 100 yards rushing in this one, with Penny actually leading the Aztecs with his 117 yards. As a team, San Diego State rushed for 242 yards and three touchdowns. The 5-foot-9, 180-pound Pumphrey looked absolutely unstoppable for much of the season, but had been held under 100 yards rushing in each of his last two games prior to breaking out of his mini-slump on Saturday. San Diego State has now won back-to-back Mountain West titles. A year ago, they defeated Air Force to earn conference bragging rights.
Dec 3 - 11:37 PM

Arkansas State sophomore RB Warren Wand rushed for 135 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries in Saturday's 36-14 win over Texas State.

Wand scored from 26 yards out early in the second quarter. That was the only touchdown the Red Wolves managed in the first half. They clung to a 16-14 lead entering the fourth quarter before dropping 20 consecutive points in the fourth to pull away for an easy-on-the-scoreboard victory. This was just Wand's second 100-yard rushing effort in 12 games. At 7-5, Arkansas State will be going bowling in the coming weeks.
Dec 3 - 11:24 PM

Wisconsin redshirt freshman QB Alex Hornibrook (head) is not starting Saturday's Big Ten Championship Game against Penn State.

Hornibrook has been dealing with a head injury sustained against Minnesota last weekend. While he will potentially be available in the Big Ten title tilt, Bart Houston draws the start in his place. Both quarterbacks could see playing time depending on the flow of the game.
Dec 3 - 8:21 PM

Oklahoma redshirt junior QB Baker Mayfield announced that he's coming back for his final season next year.

The redshirt junior was granted an additional season of eligibility prior to the campaign when the Big 12 voted to allow walk-ons to transfer within the conference without losing a season of eligibility. Mayfield, who finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy voting last year, threw for 3,669 yards and 38 touchdowns this year.
