ESPN's Mel Kiper ranks Georgia's Alec Ogletree as the No. 7 overall prospect and projects the LB to the Buffalo Bills at pick No. 8.

Ogletree, "has great instincts and flies to the ball all over the field," Kiper writes. "Able to attack gaps against the run, stretches wide and moves well in coverage. Reads passers well." Ogletree reminds us a bit of Thomas Davis in that he covers a lot of ground quickly, especially in coverage, and punishes ball carriers on contact. The biggest issue is that the linebacker gets walled off by blockers too easily after taking false steps.

Notre Dame LB Jaylon Smith's goal for the NFL Combine on Feb. 25 is to walk without crutches.

Smith is diligently rehabbing the torn ACL and LCL he suffered in his left knee at the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 1 (Smith underwent surgery Jan. 7). Set to report to the combine nearly eight weeks after the injury, a timetable that allows most people who suffered a similar injury to bear weight. "He’s looking really good," a source told 247 Sports last week. "We fully anticipate that when he gets to the combine and people see him, they’re going to be pretty impressed. (The specialists) are just flabbergasted at his recovery right now. They said people typically don’t recover like this. The one thing they’re really blown away by is how good his leg looks." It's too early to guess at when Smith will play in his first NFL game.

Navy RB Keenan Reynolds was not invited to the NFL Combine.

Since Reynolds is an undersized player making a position switch, this isn't necessarily surprising news. Considering his profile and work ethic, however, one would have assumed Reynolds had purchased a bit more leash from the NFL. "The former Navy quarterback is trying to convert to running back and/or return specialist -- whatever it takes to get a shot at the NFL -- but he'll have to wait until his pro day event to show scouts what he's capable of in the 40-yard dash and other agility drills," wrote NFL.com's Chad Reuter. "He looked good early in the week of East-West Shrine Game practices until a back injury sidelined him." NFL Network's Mike Mayock believes Reynolds shares similarities with New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman. Unfortunately, Reynolds won't get his chance to work out of the slot in Indianapolis.

While campaigning for a tax increase, Louisiana governor John Bel Edwards said the LSU football team is in jeopardy of being cut.

"If you are a student attending one of these universities, it means that you will receive a grade of incomplete, many students will not be able to graduate, and student-athletes across the state at those schools will be ineligible to play next semester," Edwards said. "That means you can say farewell to college football next fall." The state of Louisiana is facing a nearly $1 billion deficit, prompting Edwards' rhetoric. He also threatened that the state would be forced to shut down hospice services if new taxes aren't approved soon. Louisiana residents need not worry about LSU football going away. We aren't sure what will play worse among Edwards' denizens, the threat of axing the Bayou Bengals or the threat of yanking treatment for the sick. One way or the other, if Edwards gets anywhere near the beloved LSU football institution, he'll find himself clearing out his office soon thereafter.

Ohio State graduate RB Warren Ball transferred to Akron.

Terry Bowden‘s Zips pick up a former four-star recruit who had a tough time cracking into the Buckeye backfield rotation behind some guy named Ezekiel Elliott. Ball was the No. 16 running back in the country coming out of high school and the No. 193 player overall by Rivals. He rushed for 189 yards on 41 carries over the past three seasons.

Louisville junior LB Trevon Young (hip) is expected to miss the entire 2016 season.

Young suffered a dislocated and fractured hip in the Music City Bowl win over Texas A&M in December. It was a devastating injury that, according to the Louisville Courier Journal, a Nashville doctor said he had not seen a similar injury suffered in a football game (only in a traumatic event like a car accident). Luckily, says Young's father, the family has been told that the injury isn't as serious as the one suffered by Bo Jackson in the early 1990s. Young posted 8.5 sacks in 2015.

USC athletic director Pat Haden underwent "an unspecified medical procedure" on Thursday.

On Wednesday, the 63-year-old Haden felt light-headed while walking and nearly collapsed outside of Heritage Hall. He received medical attention and underwent the unspecified procedure the next day. Haden, who has a pacemaker, is expected to remain hospitalized for another day, maybe two.

CBS Sports' Dane Brugler and Rotoworld's Josh Norris both consider Appalachian State DL Ronald Blair a top 50 prospect.

Blair had to drop out of the East West Shrine Game due to a minor injury suffered during training, and hopefully he will be ready for the Combine. Norris placed Blair as the No. 49 prospect in his latest rankings, and Brugler followed up last night by saying Blair is a top 40 talent. The Appalachian State defender plays on the edge and inside depending on the situation, and produced an outstanding game against Clemson. Expect to hear Blair's name from others as the process goes along.

Texas interim playcaller Jay Norvell will join the football staff at Arizona State to serve as receivers coach and passing-game coordinator.

This is the fifth assistant coach departure for Texas. Norvell was promoted midseason and helped the Longhorns defeat Oklahoma. However, Charlie Strong hired Tulsa's Sterlin Gilbert to run the offense following the season. Norvell previously coached at Oklahoma before joining Texas for one season.

Southern Miss WR Michael Thomas did not receive an invitation to the NFL Combine.

Thomas will likely earn the "biggest snub" label in the days leading up to the Combine. Many were surprised Thomas participated in the NFLPA game instead of the East West Shrine or Senior Bowl, but it is time to take a step back and ask "does the NFL know something we do not?" Thomas boasts a plus 6-foot-2 200-pound frame and produced a 71-1391-14 touchdown receiving line last season.

Ohio State HC Urban Meyer indicated that five-star DE Nick Bosa will not take a redshirt in 2016.

Said Meyer, "[Bosa]'s playing. He had the knee injury, but he's well ahead of schedule. Looks fantastic, and he's a little ahead of his brother at this time." The knee injury in question was a torn ACL suffered during his senior campaign with St. Thomas Aquinas. The 6-foot-4, 255-pound clone/brother of potential No. 1 pick Joey Bosa is hoping to be healthy enough for August camp. As to the hype that will inevitably follow the five-star dynamo-in-the-making, co-DC Luke Fickell said, "Nick is a mature kid that I don't think will bat an eye coming in here. Whether he wears the No. 97, whether he looks like Joey or walks like Joey, the reality is he's Nick. He's grown up with this his whole life."

At the NFL Combine, TCU QB Trevone Boykin will work out with the quarterbacks.

"I’m told Boykin has been doing receiver work during his combine preparation but presently there are no plans for him to run routes or catch passes in Indianapolis or during pro-day at TCU," wrote TFY Draft Insider's Tony Pauline, who brought us this dispatch. "Rather Boykin will workout at receiver as teams come to campus to individually test Josh Doctson and Kolby Listenbee." We're hoping Boykin's stubbornness (seen another way, his conviction) won't cost him a potential NFL career. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram's Drew Davison reported last month that the Senior Bowl moved on from Boykin because he didn't agree to exclusively play wide receiver.
