Teams at SE Louisiana CB Robert Alford's pro day say the corner is a top 42 pick, according to draft insider Tony Pauline.

"Almost" 15 teams were in attendance even though Alford did not run the forty. The small school corner did not look out of place at the Senior Bowl and displays excellent closing speed, but his college position coach previously warned that Alford might not be mentally ready for the NFL game. That is worrisome.

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz announced that he's suspended sophomore CB Manny Rugamba for one game.

Rugamba will serve his punishment for an unspecified violation of team rules. A projected 2017 starter who started three games last year, Pro Football Focus ranked Rugamba as the top returning corner in the Big Ten. Per Ferentz, redshirt sophomore Michael Ojemudia will start in Rugamba's place in Week 1. Unfortunately for the Hawkeyes, they're set to play Wyoming and All-American candidate Josh Allen.

Rutgers senior QB Kyle Bolin was named the starting quarterback.

Bolin transferred to Rutgers in April. He started five games in 2015 at Louisville but was replaced by a young signal-caller named Lamar Jackson. Bolin beat out Giovanni Rescigno and 2017 signee Johnathan Lewis for the right to begin the season as Rutgers' quarterback.

Miami named redshirt junior QB Malik Rosier the starter.

Hurricanes coach Mark Richt announced the news Tuesday. Rosier won the derby to replace Brad Kaaya (now with the Detroit Lions) over N'Kosi Perry and Evan Shirreffs. Rosier barely played last year, throwing only four passes. He's made one start at Miami; the famous win over Duke in 2015 in which Miami needed eight laterals on the final kickoff return for the game-winning touchdown. We see Rosier as something of a caretaker. Perry is the favorite to be Miami's starting quarterback at the end of the season.

Stanford HC David Shaw compared USC redshirt sophomore QB Sam Darnold to former Cardinal QB Andrew Luck.

"He’s the best college quarterback I’ve seen at anticipating since Andrew Luck," Shaw said of the star USC quarterback. Shaw would know on the Luck front, having coached him up while serving as Stanford's offensive coordinator from 2007-2010. Darnold has the chops to follow in Luck's footsteps and land as the No. 1 overall selection next spring. "When you evaluate quarterbacks who can play at the next level," Shaw said, "you’re looking for guys who can see a play before it happens and get the ball out of their hands quick. He’s the best I’ve seen in years."

Kentucky junior WR Dorian Baker has been diagnosed with an ankle fracture and dislocation.

Baker suffered the fracture and dislocation during the team's scrimmage on Saturday. He will be undergoing surgery on Tuesday to repair the damage. "We’re very disappointed for Dorian, as he had a good offseason and was helping lead our receivers during preseason camp," said HC Mark Stoops in a statement. Baker has not been officially ruled out for the season, but his availability for the campaign is now very much in question. Blake Bone, Tavin Richardson and Kayaune Ross are all potential candidates to see bulked up reps with Baker sidelined.

Arizona State president Michael Crow put HC Todd Graham on notice.

"Losing records over more than one year in any sport are unacceptable," Crow said. "You have to look at what the reasons are and the dynamics, but Coach Graham completely understands that his very successful start at ASU has got to be realized again." ASU bolted out to a 28-12 overall record in his first three seasons with the Sun Devils, but has gone just 11-14 over the past two campaigns. Said Crow, "We’re excited about this season, but losing seasons at our level of performance expectation are unacceptable."

In the release of the AP Preseason Top-25 poll, Alabama has been ranked as the No. 1 team in the country.

Alabama sits atop once more. And it wasn't even close. The Crimson Tide received 52 first-place votes to lead in a romp, with the next three teams (Ohio State, Florida State, USC) receiving a combined nine first-place tallies. In terms of conference supremacy, the SEC led the way with six entrants in the initial top-25, while the ACC and Big 12 both put five teams into the mixer.

Ohio State redshirt sophomore RB Mike Weber (hamstring) returned to practice on Monday.

Weber (5'10/215) has been dealing with a balky hamstring throughout camp, but RB coach Tony Alford said late last week that the redshirt sophomore would be ready to rock 'n' roll for the season-opener against Indiana on Thursday, August 31. Sometimes camp injuries linger, but at this juncture, it looks like all systems go for Weber. He racked up 1,096 yards rushing and nine touchdowns a year ago.

Utah named sophomore QB Tyler Huntley the starter for the coming season.

Huntley turned in a strong preseason camp to supplant incumbent starter Troy Williams. This definitely comes out of the blue -- not only did Williams start all 13 games for the Utes a year ago, he was named a team captain in advance of the 2017 campaign. Huntley was a three-star recruit for the 2016 cycle, ranking as Rivals' No. 23 dual-threat gunslinger in that class -- his athleticism is part of what was so intriguing to HC Kyle Whittingham and staff. In backup duty behind Williams last season, Huntley saw the field in six games, attempting seven passes in that space.

Alabama redshirt junior RB Bo Scarbrough has missed the past two practices due to illness.

Rest easy, Tide fans, as Scarbrough's sitting over the weekend is not related to anything more than a touch of illness. Said HC Nick Saban, "We don’t think this is a serious illness or anything like that, but it is something that we didn’t think it would be good for him not to be in a position where he could be resting." Expect Scarbrough to get back at it in practice some time later this week.

The NCAA has ruled that Indiana freshman DB Bryant Fitzgerald is a non-qualifier for the coming season.

Fitzgerald (6'0/200) will not be allowed to play or practice with the Hoosiers this year, but does remain on scholarship. It's an unfair blow for the young man, who was blameless in the situation. Instead, all of this comes about because he was incorrectly advised by the university about classes he needed to take to be eligible for the year. Compounding matters, the NCAA doubled down on the program's misstep by denying a subsequent waiver that would have allowed Fitzpatrick to play this year. Just disappointing on every front by the alleged adults in the room. Fitzgerald was a three-star recruit in the 2017 class.
