Draft insider Tony Pauline notes that the frustration with Alabama RB Eddie Lacy's injury "is beginning to boil over."

"Scouts are questioning whether Lacy is too injured to run or just too slow," Pauline writes. Lacy missed the Combine and Alabama's Pro Day, scheduling a personal workout for April 11. We should start to hear more about his projection after that date.

South Alabama head coach Joey Jones named redshirt junior Cole Garvin the starting quarterback.

Garvin, who transferred in from Marshall in 2015, surprisingly dispatched incumbent starter Dallas Davis, who started 10 last season for the Jaguars. Last year, Garvin threw for 242 yards and three touchdowns in engineering an upset win over San Diego State. Jones said he'll decide his starting quarterback "week-to-week" this fall, so Garvin doesn't exactly have a stranglehold on the gig.

FAU HC Lane Kiffin refuted reports that he has used former Baylor coach Art Briles as a consultant.

Kiffin said Briles hasn't been used formally or informally, and added that Briles has never been to a practice. "Somebody texted me and wanted to know why I hired Art Briles, and I was like, 'What?'" Kiffin said. "He's absolutely not a consultant and has never been to practice or spoken to our team. That's classic 'somebody trying to make it a story' because it's Art Briles and Lane Kiffin." Kendal Briles, Art's son, is the new FAU offensive coordinator. Kendal indicated that he's talked to his dad about personnel and offensive strategy.

Ohio State redshirt sophomore Joe Burrow (hand) is out indefinitely.

The Buckeyes' backup signal-caller broke a bone in his throwing hand during a practice on Monday. Burrow was in the middle of a battle with redshirt freshman Dwayne Haskins to serve as veteran starter J.T. Barrett's backup. There is not currently a timetable for his return.

LSU named redshirt senior QB Danny Etling starter for the coming season.

This was a competition in name only, as no other player seriously threatened Etling's status as starter this offseason. Myles Brennan will serve as backup to the veteran gunslinger. We like Etling for an improved season under OC Matt Canada. A year ago, the redshirt senior threw for 2,123 yards with an 11/5 TD/INT ratio over the course of 11 games played after taking over for an ineffective Brandon Harris.

Clemson named junior QB Kelly Bryant the starter for the coming season.

All signs prior to the announcement had been pointing toward Bryant as the likely man to receive the first crack at replacing Deshaun Watson. It's official, now. "He has earned it and I am proud of him," said HC Dabo Swinney. "It has been a great competition, but this part is over." Bryant's experience in comparison to that of redshirt freshman Zerrick Cooper and true freshman Hunter Johnson played a big part in Swinney's decision. Bryant has seen time in 12 games during his Clemson career and has completed 13-of-18 passes for 75 yards and a touchdown in that small sample.

ECU named junior QB Gardner Minshew the starter for the coming season.

Minshew won the job over Duke transfer Thomas Sirk. Said HC Scottie Montgomery, "We like the way each manages the team, both from a leadership and execution standpoint, but Gardner has a little more familiarity with our current personnel." The 6-foot-2, 216-pound junior appeared in seven games last season, including starts in ECU's first two contests. For the campaign as a whole, he threw for 1,347 yards with an 8/4 TD/INT ratio.

UCLA and Wisconsin have agreed to a home-and-home series for the 2029 and 2030 seasons.

We have no idea what these teams are going to look like 12 years down the road, of course, but the games are now on the docket. UCLA will have hosting duties on September 15, 2029, with Wisconsin returning the favor on September 7, 2030. The Bruins have won seven of the 11 previous match-ups between the two teams.

Oregon State junior WR Seth Collins (finger) has been ruled out for the team's season-opener against Colorado State this coming Saturday.

Collins has been out with an injury to his right finger since for the past week or so. He was expected to start in the slot for the Beavers. With Collins down for the count, Trevon Bradford and Xavier Hawkins could see increased playing time in Saturday's showdown with the Rams.

Wyoming junior WR James Price is expected to miss about six weeks with a broken left collarbone.

On that six-week timeline offered up by HC Craig Bohl, Price would be ready to return around the beginning of October. While he caught a mere six passes for 75 yards in a quintet of games a year ago, the 6-foot-2, 208-pounder put in a strong spring and was looking like a nice supplementary weapon for the Cowboys prior to this collarbone break. His loss thins a mostly unproven receiving corp. Look for John Okwoli and Parker Dumas to receive closer looks over the next week-plus.

Pitt named redshirt senior QB Max Browne the starter for the coming season.

Browne beat out redshirt sophomore Ben DiNucci for starting honors. This marks the second consecutive preseason camp in which he has been named starter -- he beat out Sam Darnold at USC last August, too, before a lackluster start to the season forced HC Clay Helton's hand and led to Darnold's ascension and Browne's eventual transfer. In eight games (including three starts) with the Trojans a year ago, the 6-foot-5, 215-pounder threw for 507 yards with a 2/2 TD/INT ratio.

Former Baylor HC Art Briles has been informally working with FAU HC Lane Kiffin and FAU OC Kendal Briles.

"He wants to know personnel and different guys and making sure we’re getting those guys in the right spots and getting them touches and all that stuff," Kendal Briles said of his father. For his part, Kiffin indicated that he has sent the elder Briles game film to look over. While Briles is working on an informal basis with FAU's coaching staff, he does not have an official role with the team and has not been on campus. Briles was fired from Baylor in the spring of 2016 as a result of the ongoing sexual-assault scandal which rocked Waco.
