College Football insider Phil Steele believes Georgia has the top backfield in the country.

The ranking makes a lot of sense after Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall combined for 2,144 rushing yards and 25 touchdowns as true freshmen last season. "Neither player was even around for spring last year," Steele notes. "Both backs are big, at 215-plus pounds, and both possess power and speed. Gurley made my preseason All-American second team."

UNC junior RB Elijah Hood was taken to the locker room with an undisclosed injury during the first half of Saturday's game against Florida State.

While it is not yet known how Hood suffered the injury, CBS Sports' Jon Solomon is reporting that he was "not all there" and that he "looked a little dizzy." Those would seem to be red flags for a potential concussion. The exact nature of his injury should become more clear once the Tar Heels offer an update on his health.

Baylor redshirt senior RB Shock Linwood rushed for 237 yards and a score on 25 carries in Saturday's 45-42 win over Iowa State.

This is a stunning line, as head coach Jim Grobe phased Linwood out of the offense the past three weeks in favor of ballyhooed youngsters and publicly challenged him. Coming in, Linwood had 217 yards for zero touchdowns through four games. He was held to two carries for four yards last week against Oklahoma State after being kept beneath 60 yards by each of the sieve defenses of SMU and Rice. But today, though? Linwood ran for 106 yards and a touchdown in the first half. And then he really put on a show in the second half. In each of the last two seasons, the 5-foot-8, 200-pounder has rushed for over 1,200 yards. He may challenge that figure again if he's regained Grobe's trust.
Oct 1 - 4:51 PM

Northwestern redshirt senior WR Austin Carr caught six passes for 73 yards and three touchdowns in Saturday's 38-31 win over Iowa.

Carr, the surprise Big Ten receptions leader, has hauled in touchdown receptions in four straight games. He's the first Northwestern player to record four consecutive scoring reception games since 2000. This is coming out of nowhere, as Carr finished second on the team with 302 receiving yards last year, caught seven passes for 100 yards the year before that, didn't play at all in 2013 and redshirted in 2012. Carr now has a 32-465-6 line through five games. In his first four years on campus, he combined to post a 23-402-2 line.
Oct 1 - 4:42 PM

Northwestern junior RB Justin Jackson ran for 171 yards and a score in 26 attempts as the Wildcats upset Iowa 38-31 on Saturday.

Jackson was heroic in lifting the double-digit road 'dog to an upset victory. It's a day he'll most certainly remember, as Jackson became the fourth player in school history to top 3,000 career yards. The Wildcats managed to hang 38 points on the Hawkeyes despite entering as the worst scoring offense in the conference. If that unit is to move the ball consistently, Jackson will have to keep this up.
Oct 1 - 4:33 PM

The New Orleans Times-Picayune's James Smith reports that LSU junior RB Leonard Fournette (ankle) won't play in Saturday's showdown with Missouri.

Fournette has been hampered by ankle concerns since August. They had already cost him one game, against Jacksonville State. With Fournette ruled out for Saturday's date with Mizzou, Derrius Guice draws the start. Fantasy owners stashing Guice on their bench should feel free to start him. He rushed for 155 yards last time Fournette was unable to go.
Oct 1 - 4:32 PM

ECU senior WR Isaiah Jones caught 15 passes for 139 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's 47-29 loss to UCF.

A sign of Jones' immaculate work this season -- those 15 catches on Saturday did not even set a season high. The 6-foot-1, 197-pounder hauled in 22 passes against South Carolina in Week 3. Through five games, Jones is working to a 64-697-2 receiving line. He has notched double-digit receptions in four of five games.
Oct 1 - 4:22 PM

Georgia junior RB Nick Chubb (ankle) is playing with a brace on his ankle in Saturday's game against Tennessee.

All week, Chubb looked doubtful for Saturday due to the ankle injury he suffered against Ole Miss last weekend. On Friday, his father strongly insinuated that he would not be suiting up against the Vols. However, Kirby Smart noted on the Paul Finebaum Show that the 5-foot-10, 228-pounder had made significant progress health-wise over the last two days. Sony Michel still figures to receive a fair number of carries in the contest.
Oct 1 - 4:01 PM

Notre Dame redshirt sophomore QB DeShone Kizer completed 23 of 35 attempts for a whopping 471 yards, three touchdowns and one interception in the school's 50-33 win over Syracuse.

He added another short rushing touchdown. Kizer and the Irish decimated the Syracuse secondary early in the game, scoring 23 points in the first quarter. Kizer delivered a beautiful intermediate throw that was taken to the house, the placed an amazing sideline dart that also resulted in a score. Notre Dame's offense is not the issue.
Oct 1 - 3:52 PM

Oklahoma State junior QB Mason Rudolph completed 19 of 28 attempts for 392 yards and three touchdowns in the school's 49-31 win over Texas.

A yards per attempt average of 14 is outstanding. Rudolph delivered one 3rd & 10 completion between four defenders with perfect placement to allow his receiver to convert a 52 yard completion. He added another leaping touchdown on the ground. We likely will look back on this game as one of Rudolph's best of his career.
Oct 1 - 3:47 PM

Ohio State redshirt junior QB J.T. Barrett completed 21 of 29 attempts for 238 yards, four touchdowns and one interception in the school's 58-0 win over Rutgers.

Barrett is still quite good, despite what last season's mangled quarterback situation might have suggested. All four touchdown throws were in the first half, and the first was an outstanding play after staying strong in the pocket against pressure. He added another 46 rushing yards. Barrett might not be a downfield passer, but he can definitely lead an offense that focuses on yards after the catch and playing inside of structure.
Oct 1 - 3:18 PM

Texas A&M junior edge rusher Myles Garrett will miss Saturday's game against South Carolina with a lower left leg injury.

The No. 9 Aggies should not need Garrett to beat the Gamecocks. Wide receivers Ricky Seals-Jones and Speedy Noil are also out. Myles Garrett, a possible No. 1 pick, was injury last week against Arkansas. After South Carolina, Texas A&M face Tennessee next week.
