SI's Chris Burke was told to keep an eye on Ball State senior DE Jonathan Newsome.

Burke notes Newsome could be termed a "riser" in the 2014 draft class. The former Ohio State Buckeye transferred to Ball State in 2011 and saw his first on-field action last season. In 10 starts he tallied 12.5 tackles for loss, including 8.5 sacks.

Alabama received a verbal commitment from four-star 2017 WR Jerry Jeudy.

One has to wonder if blossoming star wideout Calvin Ridley might have been whispering in Jeudy's ear down the stretch. Ridley and Jeudy were teammates at Monarch High when the former was a senior and the latter a freshman. "It's the best fit for me," said the 6-foot-2, 175-pounder. "I felt like Alabama was home for me, and they have had good receivers from South Florida go there" Former supernova WR Amari Cooper would also fit that South Florida bill that Jeudy is referring to. While he showed inconsistency at times during the spring and summer camp circuit -- Rivals recruiting director Mike Farrell termed his performance at the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge to be that of Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde -- there is no denying Jeudy's overall level of talent. On the ESPN 300, he checks in at No. 26 overall. Probably needless to say, the Alabama machine is building a monster 2017 class. They have already received commitments from 11 ESPN 300 prospects.

Former South Carolina, Duke and Florida head coach has joined Florida's athletic department as an Ambassador and Consultant.

We doubt this will cut into Spurrier's tee times. The ball coach is returning to his "home" with the Gators, and you can expect to see him on sideline shots in fancy boxes shaking hands and mingling with top donors. It certainly seems like his coaching days are over.

An AFC college scouting director says LSU junior RB Leonard Fournette is "a bad dude."

"Big, fast, nimble, runs with aggression," he said. "You watch a (Adrian) Peterson and see Gurley and talk about how rare they are, and two years later here comes another one. … And [FSU junior Dalvin] Cook is extremely dynamic. Those two are really good. It’s a (Ricky) Williams/(Edgerrin) James type of year, and the other kids are good too. You’re seeing a rebirth of the position." MMQB noted that Stanford’s Christian McCaffrey may be a third 2016 first-rounder from the group, while Georgia’s Nick Chubb could be fourth if he's healthy. The RB crop is so incredibly deep that Oregon’s Royce Freeman and Tennessee’s Jalen Hurd head into the season almost as afterthoughts.

Future CFB Playoff semifinals will either be played on a Saturday or on a holiday.

The semifinals this past season were both played on New Year's Eve and cratered in terms of ratings. Playoff executive director Bill Hancock said in a statement, "We tried to do something special with New Year’s Eve, even when it fell on a weekday. But after studying this to see if it worked, we think we can do better." Of note, several future semifinals will still be played on New Year's Eve -- those that happen to fall on Saturdays (2016, 2021, 2022). In total, four future semifinal dates (2018, 2019, 2024 and 2025) were shifted to accommodate the scheduling tweak.

USF received a verbal commitment from four-star 2017 ATH Bruce Judson.

This time last year, Judson was espousing the virtues of Ohio State, going so far as to say that he was "100%" going to stick to his pledge with the Buckeyes. That didn't pan out. The 5-foot-9, 184-pounder backed off from Ohio State after HC Urban Meyer asked him "Who are you?" during a campus visit last summer. Regardless, South Florida earned a huge commitment here. Scout.com refers to him as "[o]ne of the top playmakers in the state of Florida" and notes that he could play running back, slot wideout or corner at the next level.

At a local fan rally, Cincinnati HC Tommy Tuberville said that sophomore QB Hayden Moore was leading the depth chart.

More surprising than the fact that Moore held the lead entering August, Tuberville tagged Gunner Kiel as his third quarterback. Redshirt freshman Ross Trail is wedged in-between the pair as Moore's current backup. Last season, Moore made highlight reels around the world when he lit up Memphis for 557 yards passing and four touchdowns at the end of September. He wouldn't come close to touching those lofty heights again and finished out with 1,885 passing yards (59.1% completions) and a 9/11 TD/INT ratio.

Penn State received a verbal commitment from four-star 2017 Derrek Pitts.

"I've seen a lot of what's going on in their recruiting right now and that influenced me a lot," Pitts said. "They're putting together a great class right now and I feel like I fit right in with that." The 6-foot-1, 180-pound safety prospect -- No. 19 at the position by Rivals metrics -- was also considering Maryland and West Virginia. Scout.com's Brian Dohn notes that Pitts "has plus length and athleticism, and can chase a play to the sideline." He speculates that it isn't out of the question that Pitts might shift to outside linebacker at some point in his collegiate career.

After suffering a disconnected hamstring last November, LSU redshirt senior WR Travin Dural is back to 100 percent ahead of his final collegiate season.

Dural flirted with entering the 2016 NFL Draft, but the injury and low production, thanks to LSU's offensive focus, likely propelled him back to college. Dural did not participate in spring activities, but Les Miles is very optimistic for his readiness when the Tigers open fall camp. Dural and Malachi Dupre make up one of the best receiving duos in the country.

Oklahoma State senior WR Marcell Ateman could be sidelined until October after undergoing surgery to repair a broken bone in his foot.

Ateman stands a gigantic 6-foot-4 and 215-pounds. He emerged last season, leading some to say he is the school's top target moving forward. Ateman finished with 766 yards and five touchdowns on 45 receptions. Ateman's best games included Iowa State, Kansas State and West Virginia. However, the receiver's foot was injured in non-contact drills over the summer. Foot injuries tend to lead to other ailments down the road, so Ateman should not rush his return.

Michigan State LB Riley Bullough told media members Penn State sophomore Saquon Barkley was the best RB he faced in 2015.

Bullough and Michigan State faced Ezekiel Elliott last season, and limited the future top five pick to 33 yards on 12 carries, which ended in Elliott expressing his frustration to the media. "I think they bring different things to the table. Barkley was a great back, he was hard to tackle," Bullough said. Barkley produced over 100 yards against the Spartans. Northwestern linebacker Anthony Walker, who we absolutely love, also praised Barkley's game. Expectations are high for Barkley this year.

247Sports reports that a large number of schools have shown interest in transferring Florida junior QB/WR Treon Harris.

Per the report, FBS schools Southern Miss, Texas State and Georgia State have all spoken directly to Harris’ family. FCS programs including Florida A&M, Howard and Hampton have also gotten in touch. In addition to that, Minnesota, Kansas, SMU, Eastern Michigan, Jacksonville State, East Carolina, Coastal Carolina and Mercer have all requested Harris' release so they can make contact. Harris, a former four-star recruit and the nation's No. 9 athlete in his class, could play quarterback, wide receiver or safety, depending on where he winds up. Harris is expected to settle on finalists by Monday in an effort to enroll in August.
