Former Pittsburgh sophomore RB Rushel Shell will choose between West Virginia or Kentucky in the next day or two.

We thought Kentucky was never in the race, since reports surfaced they weren't interested. Apparently those were wrong, but West Virginia appears to be the favorite to land the running back. This will not conflict with their addition of Charles Sims, since Shell will have to sit out the 2013 season.

Auburn sophomore DE Carl Lawson hopes to play "towards the end of the year" despite undergoing ACL surgery in May, according to Gus Malzahn.

Lawson's father previously stated it is "not in the thought process" for his son to miss the 2014 season after injuring his left knee. The sophomore had a great first year at Auburn, registering four sacks in a limited role.

Junior DB Jalen Mills is currently not listed on LSU's depth chart.

Mills was suspended on June 11 with the tag of "indefinite" after being arrested on a battery charge. LSU certainly has handled its fair share of suspensions over the years, including allowing the team to vote for Jeremy Hill's eligibility. Mills will likely miss game action, but how much is the question.

Former Wake Forest OLB Aaron Curry, the No. 4 pick in the 2009 draft, will be a graduate assistant at UNC-Charlotte for the 2014 season.

Curry was a part of the Seahawks from 2009 to 2011 and was a journeyman with the Raiders and Giants after. Deemed a "can't miss" prospect by many, Curry was anything but. UNCC is currently an Independent school in the FCS, but will jump to Conference-USA (FBS) in 2015.

UCF redshirt senior LT Torrian Wilson is moving inside to OG for his senior season, according to CBS Sports' Dane Brugler.

"Good to see UCF OL Torrian Wilson is moving inside to OG as a senior. Was going to happen eventually, struggling at LT on 2013 tape," Brugler tweeted. Some evaluators think the 6-feet-4, 308-pound Wilson projects more as a guard at the next level. Moving inside will give the UCF prospect a year under his belt at the position, while opening up an opportunity in the starting lineup for the Knights’ talented redshirt sophomore tackle Michael Campbell.

Former Tennessee redshirt freshman QB Riley Ferguson plans on transferring to UNC-Charlotte, according to CBS Sports' Jeremy Fowler.

Fowler cites a source close to the Vols' program and adds the transfer should take place barring "any recent changes." Ferguson sat out his only season with Tennessee and would be eligible to play immediate for his hometown 49ers.

Oregon State redshirt senior QB Sean Mannion won the Elite 11 Counselors' Challenge.

"I'm just trying to keep refining as a quarterback, keep working on footwork, working on being accurate and quickening my release," Mannion said after the event. "Really it's everything you can do to improve. Quarterback is a very multifaceted position and there's room for me to improve in all areas." The 6-foot-5, 220-pounder threw for 4,662 yards and 37 touchdowns last season. He almost opted to enter the draft, but decided to exhaust his collegiate eligibility. "I got the evaluation from the advisory board and it said a third-round grade," Mannion said. "There are not a lot of specific critiques, so I spoke with my coaches and they told me the things I could work on. For me, I feel like I can grow in all areas so I try to be the best player I can be. I really want to help our team have a great season this year." Mannion said he needs to improve his accuracy.

Washington State has released redshirt freshman QB Tyler Bruggman from scholarship, according to Fox Sports' Bruce Feldman.

Bruggman was competing with Luke Falk for the No. 2 job. The quarterback took a redshirt year during his first season with the Cougars, and Feldman notes Bruggman has been released to play for Arkansas, Duke, Louisville or Indiana. He was listed as a four-star prospect by many scouting services.

South Carolina senior WR Damiere Byrd reportedly clocked a 4.30 40-yard dash.

"We ran Monday at 7 a.m., and he went 4.30," Gamecocks quarterback Dylan Thompson said Friday. "And it's accurate. Bruce (Ellington) ran 4.44 at our place, and ran 4.45 at the combine, so it's not just some number we're throwing out." We, for one, believe him. The 5-foot-9, 170-pound Byrd once ran a 4.26 forty. We're happy to see his wheels have returned intact after the former track star underwent knee surgery that knocked him out of spring practice.

At the Manning Passing Academy, FSU redshirt sophomore QB Jameis Winston told NFL.com that he considers himself a student first and athlete second.

"I think that's the main purpose in college. Some athletes lose that perspective," Winston added. "It's about being a student-athlete, and not just getting that easy money and going to the league." Winston's father recently told reporters as much, saying his son plans on participating in at least one more season of baseball and two more on the football field. Obviously this can change, but the family seems to be on a similar page at the moment.

Oklahoma senior TE Blake Bell was one of 40 tight ends named on the Mackey Award preseason watch list.

This speaks to Bell's athletic ability as much as anything, since he's in the process of transitioning to tight end. The 6-foot-6, 265-pounder started eight games at QB last year. He's joined on the list by big names such as Iowa State's E.J. Bibbs, Ohio State's Jeff Heuerman, Alabama's O.J. Howard, Notre Dame's Ben Koyack and Florida State's Nick O'Leary.

CBS Sports' Derek Stephens sees in Florida State senior RB Karlos Williams a "versatile and extremely athletic running back" with the potential to be "elite" in the NFL.

The 6-foot-1, 223-pounder had 731 rushing yards on 91 carries and 11 touchdowns during his junior year while sharing the backfield with James Wilder Jr. and Devonta Freeman. Now, it's Williams' time to break out. "Williams possesses speed, cutback ability and power, and demonstrated improved vision over the course of his lone season at tailback," Stephens wrote. "Has the talent to be an elite running back at the next level if he can continue to improve."
