Alabama senior FB Jalston Fowler is expected to be used all over the offensive formation.

Head coach Nick Saban has practiced at H-back and tailback thus far. Fowler was expected to have a similar role last year before suffering a season ending knee injury. Fowler participated in spring activities on a non-contact basis, so hopefully that changes during preseason camp.

Nebraska HC Scott Frost was named AP Coach of the Year for his undefeated season with UCF.

Frost had already earlier been named the Home Depot Coach of the Year. Another piece of hardware for his shelf, now. For this particular award, he won over Clemson's Dabo Swinney and Georgia's Kirby Smart. He helped shepherd UCF to an undefeated record this season -- capped off by a win over Memphis in the AAC Championship Game -- and a berth in the Peach Bowl against Auburn on New Year's Day. While he accepted the head-coaching gig at Nebraska following that conference title win, Frost will coach his Knights one last time come the Peach Bowl before moving on for good.

Middle Tennessee junior WR Richie James will forego his senior season to enter the 2018 NFL Draft.

James had himself a lost campaign this year, playing in just five games due to an early high-ankle sprain and a late broken collarbone. When healthy during his collegiate career, the 5-foot-9, 170-pound wideout is as prolific as they come -- he topped 100 catches and 1,300 yards in each of his first two seasons with the Blue Raiders before injuries knocked him out this time around. Despite those huge statistics, James is naturally undersized and will need a big evaluating process. Both Draft Analyst's Tony Pauline and Walter Football's Charlie Campbell believe that he could potentially have to fight his way onto an NFL roster as an undrafted free agent, though Campbell does see some upside for a late Day 3 selection.
Dec 18 - 1:04 PM

Northern Illinois senior RB Jordan Huff will undergo ankle surgery.

Huff (5'11/218) had already been ruled out for the Quick Lane Bowl (versus Duke) on Dec. 26, but he'll now be having his ankle worked on, to boot. He initially injured it in a mid-November game against Western Michigan, having previously rushed for 740 yards and four touchdowns for the season. Tommy Mister, Marcus Jones and Tre Harbison will fill in for him in the Quick Lane Bowl. Huff was already a likely undrafted free agent for draft purposes prior to his requiring surgery.
Dec 18 - 12:51 PM

Texas HC Tom Herman said that junior LB Malik Jefferson (toe) has not yet made a decision regarding the NFL Draft.

Herman will be discussing possible declarations with Jefferson and the rest of the team's draft-eligible players this coming weekend. It is being reported that the 6-foot-3, 240-pounder will likely throw his hat into the pro ring when the time comes. He's a potential first-rounder should he declare. The linebacker is currently day-to-day with turf toe and it is unknown whether he will be able to play in the Texas Bowl against Missouri on Dec. 27.

Oregon signed DC Jim Leavitt to a four-year, $6.8 million contract.

Leavitt was reportedly in line for a possible job on Florida State's staff alongside new HC Willie Taggart. He won't be following Taggart to Tallahassee, now, though. His new deal in Eugene is worth $1.7 million annually, a mark on par with the yearly salaries of big-dog defensive coordinators Dave Aranda and Brent Venables. Oregon showed marked improvement under Leavitt's watch this past season after the Ducks flamed out defensively at the end of the Mark Helfrich era. They jumped from 126th in total FBS defense in 2016 to 46th for the current campaign, Leavitt's first on the job after coming over from Colorado this past winter.
Dec 18 - 12:25 PM

West Virginia junior WR David Sills will return to school for the 2018 season rather than declare for the NFL Draft.

Sills will reunite with QB Will Grier, who is likewise foregoing the NFL to finish out his senior season with the Mountaineers. The 6-foot-4, 203-pound converted quarterback was something of a revelation this season, catching 60 passes for 980 yards and 18 touchdowns. Those 18 scores were the most receiving touchdowns in the NCAA and the most from scrimmage in the Big 12.

NFL.com's Daniel Jeremiah wrote that Ohio State redshirt senior OL Billy Price is "one of the best center prospects I’ve seen in the past decade."

"I gave Price the same grade I gave (Nick) Mangold when he entered the league, and Mangold ended up being a first-round selection," Jeremiah writes. The analyst also grades him higher than Vikings C Pat Elflein, who is currently in the midst of a rock-solid rookie season. The 6-foot-3, 212-pounder was a unanimous All-American for the past season and won the Rimington Trophy (given to the nation's best center) for his fine efforts. He's going to be selected in the first round come the spring draft -- it's just a matter of how high he climbs.

USC received a verbal commitment from four-star 2018 RB Markese Stepp.

Stepp (6'0/228) sided with the Trojans after taking an official visit this weekend. He'll be signing come Wednesday's early signing period. He had been a Notre Dame pledge dating back to the summer of 2016 prior to opening his recruitment back up at the beginning of December. ESPN's No. 226 overall prospect in the 2018 class is a bruising prospect who offers fantastic vision and plenty of promise as a blocker. USC has a history of closing strong in recruiting. They are a program to watch for Wednesday.

USC four-star 2018 verbal RB commit Mychael Salahuddin reopened his recruitment.

Salahuddin (5'11/190) is not completely discounting the Trojans from his thoughts, but North Carolina, Pitt, Clemson and Maryland are also in the mix, here, with all four of the latter programs offering a more comfortable landing spot in terms of proximity for the Washington D.C. native. This weekend, he is checking out Maryland in unofficial capacity. Syracuse is another east coast program to keep an eye on. While the tough runner's decommitment comes just days before the start of the early winter signing period (Dec. 20-22), that is mere coincidence -- the all-purpose back does not plan on inking with his eventual program until the more traditional February opportunity. The 247Sports Composite ranks him as the No. 4 all-purpose back in the 2018 class.
Dec 17 - 1:53 PM

Auburn received a verbal commitment from four-star 2018 DE Kayode Oladele.

Oladele (6'5/236) will be putting pen to paper with the Tigers on Wednesday, the first day of the early winter signing period. He opted for Auburn over Ole Miss. A native of Nigeria currently plying his trade at Champagnat Catholic High School (Miami), the defensive end ranks as ESPN 300's No. 159 overall prospect in the 2018 class. He is still quite raw as a prospect, but flashes plenty of upside for down the road, particularly in terms of his strength and range. Oladele is a prime candidate to receive a redshirt during his inaugural campaign with Auburn. He'll be enrolling at the program in the summer.

Nebraska freshman WR Keyshawn Johnson Jr. will transfer.

Johnson (6'1/195) did not play for Nebraska this season, as he left the team over the offseason to deal with the repercussions of a marijuana citation arrest. Nebraska -- then under the guidance of HC Mike Riley -- kept the door open for him to potentially return in January, something which both he and his father, Keyshawn Johnson Sr., indicated on several occasions during the fall would be in the cards. Just how much of Johnson's about-face, here, is related to the hire of UCF's Scott Frost to replace Riley is not yet known. Johnson ranked as the No. 43 wideout in the 2017 class by Rivals metrics.
