Oregon State head coach Mike Riley has named junior Sean Mannion the school's starting QB.

Mannion had been competing with senior Cody Vaz to start the opener against Eastern Washington. Both passers started games last year, with Mannion opening the season on a hot streak before injuring his knee. He returned with a four interception game, which allowed Vaz to hold on to the job. Riley added there is no plan to play both quarterbacks in the opener, but Vaz will be ready. Even with Markus Wheaton in the NFL, be on the lookout for junior receiver Brandin Cooks.

Notre Dame redshirt sophomore RB Greg Bryant has been ruled academically ineligible for the 2015 season, according to Pete Sampson of Irish Illustrated.

Bryant needed a B+ in a summer school class to stay eligible and received a B-. He will return to campus on August 22 and continue his education. On June 29 it was announced that Bryant was suspended for four games for a violation of team rules. Bryant offered good depth behind Tarean Folston, who we are excited to see this season. HC Brian Kelly has praised Bryant in the past. He rushed for 303 yards and three touchdowns on 57 carries thus far during his time at Notre Dame.

Former Utah junior CB Dominique Hatfield was charged with misdemeanor assault stemming from a fight at a July party.

Hatfield's life is in shambles. He was arrested in early July in a separate case for aggravated robbery and theft. Utes head coach Kyle Whittingham dismissed him from the team, though those charges were later dropped. When Whittingham made his decision, he curiously mentioned additional concerns with Hatfield's behavior. Perhaps he knew additional legal complications were in the offing. Either way, prosecutors now say they could refile altered charges in the robbery case. The 20-year-old Hatfield started 10 games last season, but he's miles away from a potential reinstatement after this week's news. "This is obviously a huge setback in that respect," Greg Skordas, Hatfield's lawyer, said. "Unfortunately, the timing of it is problematic in terms of him getting back on the field."

Pittsburgh junior WR Tyler Boyd has been suspended for the first game of the season against Youngstown State.

Boyd is facing a DUI charge from an arrest that took place in mid-June. The receiver was suspended from team activities for a month. Defensive end Rori Blair was also suspended for the first game for a different DUI charge. Many consider Boyd one of the better receivers in the country and he certainly has the production to back it up. He is at his best after the catch and adjusting to the football in the air.

Michigan State senior QB Connor Cook's quarterback rating greatly improved when he was blitzed, according to Pro Football Focus.

Cook's quarterback rating improved by 35: 83 when not blitzed and 128.6 when blitzed. Also, Cook threw 16 touchdowns and only one interception when blitzed. The difference is large but not totally surprising if you have watched Cooks, as he will immediately test single coverage on the outside with lofted passes once recognizing blitzes pre-snap. His receivers were able to adjust to these passes last year, which is critical for success.

Michigan State coaches are calling senior LB Ed Davis one of the best players at the position in recent program history.

Josh Norris recently vined a play against Nebraska, where Davis met an offensive guard one yard beyond the line of scrimmage, then pushed the lineman four yards back. Needless to say, the Ameer Abdullah run was completely blown up. Davis did not receive a tackle for loss on the play, but as we always say "disruption is production." Davis is very good when moving forward against the run, and we will pay attention to how he is in coverage.

The court case involving Ole Miss junior T Laremy Tunsil and his stepfather has officially been dismissed.

The two reached an agreement over the weekend. Ole Miss has stood behind Tunsil this entire time, so expect Tunsil to not miss any meaningful action when practice gets going. The NCAA is reportedly interviewing (or already has) Tunsil's stepfather based on his claims of agent contact.

Texas HC Charlie Strong suggested senior RB Johnathan Gray could see close to 30 carries per game.

"We have backups, but we'd like to see J. Gray go out and just have a big year," Strong told reporters. The biggest issue will be for Gray to stay healthy. A torn Achilles derailed his promising sophomore season, and many athletes say it takes a full year to recover from that kind of surgery. In three seasons, Gray has averaged 4.65 yards per carry with 15 total touchdowns.

Former Clemson graduate ILB Kellen Jones transferred to Wisconsin.

Jones, who received his economics degree from Clemson and is eligible to play immediately, recorded 29 tackles across 13 games last year. He's expected to compete with Leon Jacobs and T.J. Edwards for a starting ILB spot, where the Badgers have no returning starters. Jones began his career at Michigan, transferred to Oklahoma before playing a down, and then followed defensive coordinator Brent Venables to Clemson.

Former Detroit Lions president Matt Millen predicted that Penn State junior QB Christian Hackenberg will apply for early entry into the NFL draft in 2016 and go in the top five.

"This is going to be his last year, too," Millen said. "I don't see him staying four years. He is really talented. ... He's a top-five pick." The 6-foot-4, 236-pound Hackenberg had a horrid 12/15 TD/INT ratio in 2014 and also fumbled nine times. Most experts blame those struggles on other factors, such as a new coaching staff and a terrible offensive line; Hackenberg was sacked an amazing 44 times. As we've said before, Hackenberg is out of excuses this fall. We reserve judgement until then.

Florida redshirt freshman QB Will Grier has gained a significant amount of weight and now stands at 215 lbs.

Grier was listed at 195 lbs during his recruitment and then at 200 lbs last season. The gators open practice on Thursday, and Grier seems to be the frontrunner for the No. 1 job. He fits what new head coach Jim McElwain has previously used at the position, although McElwain also considers mobility a positive. The biggest question for the Gators will be their offensive line.

Ohio State junior RB Ezekiel Elliott forced 41 missed tackles in 2014, according to Pro Football Focus.

On the season, Elliott rushed for 1,878 yards and 18 touchdowns on 273 carries. Elliott really didn't get it going until the fourth game against Cincinnati, so it is absolutely possible he puts up better production this season. Josh Norris recently looked at a large number of Big 10 prospects and was amazed by Elliott's skills. He creates so many yards for himself and maximizes his blocking by reading positioning and strengths.
