Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio announced that senior Andrew Maxwell will remain the team's starting quarterback.

"We always felt Andrew was going to be our guy," Dantonio said, "but we wanted to provide that competitive level." Dantonio said he'll additionally find playing time for sophomore Connor Cook in Friday's opener against Western Michigan. Tyler O'Connor is also "in the mix," according to Dantonio. True freshman Damion Terry impressed in recent scrimmages, but he may be headed for a redshirt. Dantonio believes he has four "big-time" quarterbacks, so it'll be interesting to see how much leash he allots Maxwell if the senior's play reverts to its 2012 form.

South Florida redshirt senior DB Hassan Childs was injured in a shooting on Saturday night.

In a brief statement, South Florida said, "The shooting incident involving USF student-athlete Hassan Childs that occurred overnight took place off campus. Childs is currently in stable condition. No one else was injured in the incident. With respect for an ongoing investigation we have no further information to share at this time." That is the extent of the information out there at this juncture, but more details figure to filter in over the coming days. During the 2016 season, the 6-foot-1, 175-pounder registered 16 tackles across eight games played.

Michigan LB/S Jabrill Peppers indicated that one NFL team views him as an offense player.

Peppers provided a convenient breakdown of how he's being seen by the NFL, with MLive.com's Nick Baumgardner passing along that per the Michigan standout, 30 teams like him as a safety, one as a linebacker and one as an offensive player. The overwhelming odds are that he will be drafted as a safety, though he figures to be used in a variety of capacities once he hits an NFL chessboard.

Michigan redshirt junior QB Wilton Speight has lost around 20 pounds since the Orange Bowl.

Speight was sitting at a bulky 254 pounds when he took the field against Florida State at the end of November. Put that closer to 235, now. "That was one of the things coach and I thought I should do. More speed, quicker feet in the pocket. I feel healthier, got a little more pep in my step," Speight said. He is now fully recovered from the collarbone injury -- HC Jim Harbaugh never confirmed it as a break -- which hindered his performance down the stretch during the 2016 campaign. Speight earned third-team All-Big Ten honors this past season after throwing for 2,538 yards (61.6% completions) with an 18/7 TD/INT ratio.

Draft Analyst's Tony Pauline passes along that BYU QB Taysom Hill "turned in an incredible workout" during Friday's pro day.

Hill hasn't much been part of the draft conversation to date, but the aged quarterback's athletic testing on pro day might draw him a bit more interest down the stretch. Among the numbers turned in by the 6-foot-2, 221-pounder, a 40-yard dash of 4.44 seconds, a 38.5-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot-2 broad jump. For context's sake, at the Combine those marks would have respectively ranked first (unseating Trevor Knight's 4.54-second 40), first (sorry again, Trevor -- Knight led Combine QB's with a 35.5-inch vertical) and third for quarterbacks. While Hill turns 27 in August and has a complicated (to put it kindly) medical history which could easily put him on the outside looking in when it comes to the draft, these strong testing results are a reminder that he has never lacked for athleticism.

Cal QB Davis Webb told CBS Sports' Sean Wagner-McGough that "numerous" teams have been telling him that he is a first-round talent.

Wagner-McGough clarifies that "numerous" label by writing that we are talking a double-digit number of teams. It is important to note that simply being told that he is a first-round talent does not guarantee a first-round pick. However, at the very least, the 6-foot-5, 209-pounder should probably be considered a Day 1 sleeper at this juncture. An AFC area scout told NFL Media's Lance Zierlein that he believes that Webb possesses the football intelligence to undo some bad habits should he land with the right team.

The Denver Post's Nicki Jhabvala reports that Alabama T Cam Robinson will visit the Broncos.

As luck would have it, NFL Network analyst Daniel Jeremiah recently slotted Robinson to the Broncos at No. 20 overall in his latest mock draft. Denver has already met with the 6-foot-6, 322-pounder at least once during the pre-Draft process, so their interest is very real.

The Browns have privately worked out Notre Dame QB DeShone Kizer.

ESPN's Todd McShay was at Kizer's pro day workout on Thursday and said he believes the gunslinger will go in the late-first or early-second round. Not only do the Browns have the No. 33 pick in Round 2, but they hold the No. 52 overall pick later on in the stanza. Cleveland basically has the Draft equity to move up and down the board as they please next month.

The Browns have conducted a private workout with Texas A&M edge rusher Myles Garrett.

The Browns will also host Garrett for an official pre-Draft workout. The Plain Dealer of Cleveland reports that the Browns are "set to take him" No. 1 overall "unless one of the quarterbacks blows them away during the predraft process." Garrett capped a dominant career at Texas A&M by demolishing the NFL Scouting Combine earlier this month. He's the heavy favorite to hear his name called first on April 27 in Philadelphia.

Texas Tech QB Patrick Mahomes went through private workouts with the Browns and the Chargers, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

That means Mahomes has worked out for the Saints, Cardinals and the two names listed above. The Red Raiders quarterback is a totally unique talent and few, if any, comparable players have had success in the NFL. With that said, Mahomes will be the top quarterback on many evaluators' boards.

Michigan TE Jake Butt said he could be healthy enough to participate in football activities in mid-July.

Butt says he is ahead of schedule after suffering an MCL and ACL injury in late December. Obviously the prospect will use a bit of hyperbole in terms of health timelines, but it is fair to say that Butt would be viewed as the top tight end in many other draft classes.

The Chargers are putting Notre Dame QB DeShone Kizer through a private workout on Friday, according to Ian Rapoport.

The Chargers, Saints, Chiefs and Cardinals continue to be interested in the top quarterback names despite having a starting quarterback on the roster. This adds fuel to the fire that these teams could lock up the long-term replacement before teams with immediate quarterback needs draft them. We contend DeShone Kizer's 2015 tape is the best in this class.
