After reviewing last season's tape, draft insider Tony Pauline likes what he saw from Fresno State senior QB Derek Carr.

Pauline does note it is "a hell of a struggle not drawing parallels to his brother's career." We think they share one common trait, poor poise in the face of pressure, which can destroy a quarterback's career. Derek Carr did deal with a sports hernia last season, so he might have improved that aspect of his game thanks to a clean bill of health.

FSU redshirt senior QB Sean Maguire (foot) was back at practice on Friday.

Maguire broke a bone in his right foot on August 11 and subsequently underwent surgery. He has made nice progress in his recovery, though, with his walking boot removed on Monday and a practice return on Friday in which the 6-foot-3, 220-pounder took part in team drills and individual drills. Deondre Francois is still set to start in a marquee (you can throw a dart and say that about half the match-ups during the opening week) showdown with Ole Miss on September 5, but Maguire's speedy recovery from the relatively recent break makes it at least a possibility that Francois could have a fight for the season-long starting job if he struggles early.

According to multiple reports, Duke redshirt senior QB Thomas Sirk will miss the season after reinjuring his surgically-repaired left Achilles.

During ACC media days, HC David Cutcliffe was optimistic that Sirk would be able to start the season-opener against NC Central. That proved to be an optimistic assessment and then some. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Sirk has been limited in August camp and reportedly suffered the re-injury of his left Achilles on Thursday. Redshirt freshman Daniel Jones was taking the majority of first-team reps as of Thursday.

Hawaii senior RB Paul Harris did not carry the ball during the first quarter of Friday's Sydney showdown with Cal.

Just a little keep-your-eye-on-it update. When the Warriors released their opening depth chart prior to the game, Harris was not listed as a starter. There is no suspension here and ESPN's cameras caught the 5-foot-11, 190-pounder in uniform on the sideline. Last season, Harris rushed for a very respectable 1,143 yards (5.8 YPC) and six touchdowns. That new HC Nick Rolovich feels so confident in his stable of backs -- led by Diocemy Saint Juste -- that he will hold back on Harris is a nice sign for that side of Hawaii's offense, at least in theory. Cal leads Hawaii 17-14 early in the second quarter as of this posting.

Army junior QB Ahmad Bradshaw is "likely" to be the starting quarterback this season.

That really de-esculated quickly. It was reported last week that Bradshaw had left both the football program, but just one day later the 5-foot-11, 196-pounder apparently changed his mind. And now he is set to start. In eight games (seven starts) last season, he rushed for 450 yards (3.4 YPC) and five touchdowns. He was surprisingly mistake-free in his limited time as a passer last season, throwing for 429 yards (47.9% completions) with a 5/2 TD/INT ratio.

Michigan redshirt sophomore QB Wilton Speight does not believe the Wolverines will utilize both he and Houston transfer QB John O'Korn in the opener against Hawaii.

"I don't think that [playing two quarterbacks is] a thing. That kind of backfired on Ohio State last year, you saw with J.T. Barrett and Cardale Jones," Speight said. "I think Coach, having played the position, wouldn't like that type of situation. I'm pretty sure who comes out on top at the end of camp, that's for a reason." The 6-foot-6, 217-pounder, perhaps fearing the wrath of the internet, quickly clarified that this was not a jab at the Buckeyes, rather just an example. HC Jim Harbaugh did not name Jake Rudock starter until after September 1 last season.

NC State HC Dave Doeren said that the team would play both junior QB Ryan Finley and redshirt sophomore QB Jalen McClendon in the season-opener against William & Mary.

Nice work by McClendon to hang on here, as Finley's offseason transfer to NC State from the fertile wilds of the Boise Valley caused most to simply assume that the former Bronco would ascend to a starting role without much issue (particularly given that he is being reunited with former BSU OC Eli Drinkwitz). The Wolfpack have the luxury of experimenting early until they find the right fit, with the first three games on their schedule coming against William & Mary, East Carolina and Old Dominion before they enter ACC conference play.

Oregon named senior QB Dakota Prukop the starter for 2016.

Prukop took a little while to acclimate to the Ducks' system after transferring over from Montana State, but he made strides over the summer and began to pull away from Travis Jonsen and Justin Herbert midway through August camp. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound gunslinger threw for 3,025 yards (62.8% completions) with a 28/10 TD/INT ratio with the Bobcats last season. He is also a threat to run, having compiled 797 yards on the ground a year ago. His first game against FBS competition in a Ducks uniform will come when Oregon hosts Virginia on September 10. In terms of fantasy, he should be considered a high-upside sleeper. A smooth transition from FCS to FBS play is by no means guaranteed, but Prukop will have oodles of skill-position talent to work with as he finds his pond wings.

Hawaii named senior QB Ikaika Woolsey the starter for Friday's game against Cal.

"[Woolsey]'s showed great decision-making, takes care of the football, overall he has more of a calm spirit and he's focused. He's worked to not make too much happen and just play within the system," said passing game coordinator Craig Stutzmann. The 6-foot-1, 215-pounder has started 19 games over the last three seasons. 12 of those starts came in 2014. In that campaign, he threw for 2,538 yards (50.5% completions) with a 13/13 TD/INT ratio. He holds an 18/22 TD/INT ratio for his collegiate career as a whole.

Houston board of regents chairman Tilman Fertitta indicated that the school could know whether it will be invited to join an expanded Big 12 or not within 60-90 days.

Earlier this month, it was reported that the Big 12 was hoping to wrap up expansion proceedings by the start of the season. That won't be happening. But there does appear to be movement here. Said Fertitta, "They have a timeline. We think in the next 60-90 days it will all be over and hopefully the University of Houston will be in the Big 12." The Cougars are among a number of AAC programs hoping to jump to the conference. The Cincinnati Enquirer's Jason Williams wrote in early August that Houston and Cincinnati would make logical sense here.

Auburn junior S Stephen Roberts was arrested on charges of attempting to evade an officer and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Per the arrest report, Roberts was arrested on Wednesday night during a traffic stop. He was not driving, but exited and attempted to flee after authorities stopped the vehicle. The allegedly unlicensed weapon was a handgun. Both charges being levied against the 5-foot-11, 183-pounder are misdemeanors. An Auburn spokesperson told AL.com that "Coach Malzahn is aware" and is "gathering all the facts and will handle the situation appropriately." Roberts was an expected starter for the coming season. He appeared in all 13 games a year ago, starting each of the final four contests.

Indiana named redshirt junior QB Richard Lagow the starter for 2016.

Lagow initially signed with UConn as part of the 2013 class, but transferred to Oklahoma State before the start of that season. He would take a redshirt in 2013 before bouncing over to Cisco Junior College for the past two seasons. Then onward to Indiana. The 6-foot-5, 205-pounder beat out junior gunslinger Zander Diamont for the right to open as Indiana's starter. The ESPN JC50 ranked him as the No. 49 overall JUCO prospect in the 2016 class. Playing with one of the best receiving corps in the Big Ten, Lagow has a chance to put up legitimate fantasy numbers now that he has secured the starting gig.
