Wisconsin redshirt sophomore RB Melvin Gordon rushed for 143 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries in a 41-10 win over Purdue.

Gordon is the top draft-eligible running back in college football. This game actually lowered his yards per carry average. He reminds us of a less swift Jamaal Charles, but offers more yards after contact skills.

Maryland is expected to hire former LSU OC Matt Canada as offensive coordinator.

Strong hire here by DJ Durkin. Canada's only LSU offense finished No. 54, but to be fair he inherited a mediocre quarterback and had to deal with offensive meddling from HC Ed Orgeron. Canada and Coach O agreed after the season that parting ways was the best for both parties. LSU's loss is Maryland's gain. Only one year ago, Canada was considered one of college football's best offensive minds. He was a 2016 Broyles Award finalist as offensive coordinator at Pittsburgh. Prior to that, Canada was the OC at NC State (2013-15), Wisconsin (2012), Northern Illinois (2011), Indiana (2007-10), Northern Illinois (2003) and Butler (1997).

Hawaii senior QB Dru Brown will transfer.

The news comes out of nowhere. Brown (6'0/200), formerly Hawaii's starting quarterback, completed 254-of-412 for 2,785 yards and an 18/8 TD/INT rate this past season. After winning a bowl game following the 2016 season, the Rainbow Warriors sagged to 3-9 last year. Hawaii intends to return to the run-and-shoot offense it utilized to great success in the early 2000's. It's possible Brown was told he wasn't seen as a fit for the change in direction. We haven't been apprised if Brown was able to graduate in three years. If he was, he'll be eligible to play immediately wherever he winds up. If he hasn't yet graduated, transferring to another FBS school would result in being forced to sit the 2018 season.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Ohio State co-OC/QB coach Ryan Day is expected to remain with the Buckeyes after speaking with the Tennessee Titans about their OC job.

According to reports, Mike Vrabel offered Day the keys to the Tennessee Titans offense. Instead, Day will apparently stay with Urban Meyer. Day's first order of 2018 business? Find a quarterback. Dwayne Haskins, Joe Burrow and Tate Martell are the candidates to replace JT Barrett, with Haskins the big early favorite.

Washington State HC Mike Leach told reporters that deceased QB Tyler Hilinski showed no obvious signs of depression leading up to Hilinski's suicide last Tuesday.

"Everyone has some dark space that they work through, I'm sure, but no one really saw anything like that," Leach said. "He didn't have signs of depression. He didn't have periods where he was moping around or anything like that. He was honestly a very steady guy. Kind of guy who would lift up others when they were down." According to Leach, Hilinski had even texted teammates to schedule a throwing session on Tuesday afternoon. On that afternoon, police arrived at Hilinski's apartment at the request of a Wazzu staffer, who had been called after Hilinski didn't show at practice or respond to messages. Hilinski was found dead with a rifle and a handwritten suicide note. He had been expected to take over as Wazzu's starting quarterback in 2018. Tyler Hilinski was 21.

Former Oklahoma junior RB Abdul Adams transferred to Syracuse.

Dino Babers strikes again on the free-agent transfer market. First, he snagged former four-star Michigan State receiver Trishton Jackson last week, and now he's landed Adams, another former four-star recruit who immediately becomes the most talented back Babers has had in New York. The 5-foot-11, 205-pound Adams rushed for 542 yards with two total touchdowns on an eye-popping 9.2 yards per carry last year. Oklahoma minimized his role in the offense as the season went on due to Adams' ball-security issues and the emergence of Rodney Anderson. Adams, who must sit out next season to satisfy transfer rules, will have two years of eligibility remaining beginning in 2019. He should become Syracuse's RB1 the second he's eligible. His speed and shiftiness could lead to huge numbers in this explosive offense.

Chris Low of ESPN reports that TE coach/ST coordinator Shane Beamer is leaving Georgia for Oklahoma.

Beamer is the son of former Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer and has been on the Georgia staff since 2016. His exact title isn't specified, but Low reports that Beamer will assist Sooners coach Lincoln Riley in offensive gameplans. Beamer is seen by many as a rising star in the industry, and could be a head-coaching candidate in the coming years.

Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield is one of seven finalists for the Lombardi Award.

The other six finalists with Mayfield are Saquon Barkley, Penn State (RB; Minkah Fitzpatrick, Alabama (S); Shaquem Griffin, UCF (LB); Lamar Jackson Louisville (QB); Joel Lanning, Iowa State (LB/QB); and Bryce Love, Stanford (RB). The Lombardi Award was limited to lineman and linebackers in the past, but opened up to include skill-position players starting this year.

Stanford redshirt senior QB Keller Chryst will transfer as a graduate.

Chryst (6'5/236) began the 2017 season as starter for the Cardinal, but failed to spark the offense to any real degree -- four of his seven starts saw him throw for one or no touchdown passes -- before being supplanted by K.J. Costello in the middle of the campaign. Costello, entering his redshirt sophomore year in 2018, should have the starting job in Palo Alto on lock-down, making this a logical transfer by Chryst. As for where he might land for his final season of eligibility, USA Today's Dan Wolken forwards that Tennessee could be a program to watch.

Miami junior CB Malek Young will undergo career-ending neck surgery.

Young (5'9/180) sustained the neck injury during the first quarter of the team's Orange Bowl loss to Wisconsin earlier this winter. It's a tough turn of events for the Hurricanes, as the former three-star recruit was really starting to come into his own. He earned All-ACC honorable mention for the 2017 season after posting 43 tackles, eight passes defended and a pair of interceptions. He started 10 games for the Hurricanes during the campaign. Michael Jackson, Trajan Bandy and Jhavonte Dean are the three lone scholarship corners remaining on roster. The Canes also have a pair of four-star cornerbacks incoming in December signees Al Blades Jr. and Gilbert Frierson, though it would probably be optimistic to expect immediate contributions out the gate from those talented youngsters.

Four-star 2018 ATH Justin Watkins has verbally committed to Florida.

Watkins had previously been committed to Texas, and also has been a verbal commitment to LSU and Florida State. Long story short, Watkins has had himself a heck of a time in his recruiting process. It appears that Florida is the final destination, and it's a big get for the Gators. ESPN ranks him second among athlete prospects, with 247 Sports calling him the 16th best receiver in the country. Reports indicate he has tremendous speed and he'll be able to return kicks immediately, and that he also is strong enough to run over receivers. It shouldn't shock anyone if Watkins is an immediate contributor for the Florida offense and special teams.

Arkansas QB Austin Allen completed 6-of-9 passes for 75 yards in helping the National to a win over the American 23-0 on Saturday in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl.

Allen was the most effective quarterback on the National side, which isn't saying a whole lot, if we're being honest. Still, the former Razorback signal-caller did make a couple of nice throws and helped lead his squad to victory. Injury concerns and disappointing results when he was healthy likely have Allen as an UDFA come draft time, barring a huge showing in his pro day.
