Oregon junior OW De'Anthony Thomas injured his right ankle during the opening kickoff against Cal.

Thomas could not return to the game. No updates have been posted, but when asked if he would play against Colorado, Thomas answered "we'll see." The Ducks played in heavy rain, which likely factored into the injury.

South Carolina junior RB Mike Davis was held to 15 rushing yards on six carries in the team's 52-28 loss to Texas A&M.

Davis dealt with a rib injury prior to this game, however, he mocked reports that stated he might not be 100 percent. Steve Spurrier seemed to think it was not the correct choice for Davis to play the first snap, as Brandon Wilds ended up getting the start and receiving nine carries compared to Davis' six. Wilds was more effective than Davis as well. Don't get us wrong, we still think Davis has a great season. he is a very good running back prospect.

Texas A&M sophomore QB Kenny Hill went off against South Carolina, completing 44 of 60 attempts for 511 yards and three touchdowns in the school's 52-28 win.

Hill broke Johnny Manziel's single game school passing record along the way. The sophomore has not displayed the same rushing threat just yet, netting five yards, but Hill spread the targets out to every Aggie receiver. Texas A&M lost three first-round picks on offense, however, they still boast one of the best offensive lines in the country. Be prepared to hear a lot more about Kenny Hill.

CBS Sports' Dane Brugler spoke with one NFL scout who thinks FSU senior Karlos Williams might be the top RB the school has produced since Warrick Dunn.

Since Dunn, the Noles have produced Devonta Freeman, Chris Thompson, Lorenzo Booker, Leon Washington, Greg Jones, Travis Minor and Lamar Glenn as backfield draft picks. We think Williams is extremely talented, as he couples power with straight-line speed. It will be interesting to see him take on pass protection opportunities.

ESPN's Mel Kiper ranks Arizona State junior D.J. Foster as the No. 5 draft-eligible RB prospect.

Foster is ranked ahead of Miami's Duke Johnson, FSU's Karlos Williams, Boise State's Jai Ajayi and Nebraska's Ameer Abdullah. Foster's head coach recently said the running back will become a household name and could total 1,000 rushing and receiving yards.

Scouts Inc.'s Todd McShay ranks FSU redshirt sophomore QB Jameis Winston as the nation's No. 1 prospect.

"A product of both special instincts for the position and good training, Winston's natural gifts are clear -- size, arm strength, athleticism -- but so is the ability to manipulate the pocket, see pressure early and deliver the ball to the right target," McShay writes. We could not have said it better ourselves. His eye level while pressured is what makes Winston so special. For the record, McShay ranks Marcus Mariota as the No. 2 overall prospect.

Alabama suspended senior ILB Trey DePriest for the opener versus West Virginia in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff on Saturday.

Head coach Nick Saban announced the suspension Wednesday, saying DePriest committed a minor NCAA infraction. We don't yet know what that infraction was, but Alabama is being overly cautious because any victory attained with an ineligible player on the field would be vacated. DePriest, a two-year starter coming off a career-high 65 tackle (7.5 for loss), had the look of a breakout player this fall. Reggie Ragland and Reuben Foster will start at linebacker for the Crimson Tide.

USC announced redshirt senior DB Josh Shaw admitted to fabricating the story about hurting his ankles while saving his nephew from drowning, and he has been suspended indefinitely.

"We are extremely disappointed in Josh," said head coach Steve Sarkisian in a release. "He let us all down. As I have said, nothing in his background led us to doubt him when he told us of his injuries, nor did anything after our initial vetting of his story. I appreciate that Josh has now admitted that he lied and has apologized. Although this type of behavior is out of character for Josh, it is unacceptable. Honesty and integrity must be at the center of our program. I believe Josh will learn from this. I hope that he will not be defined by this incident, and that the Trojan Family will accept his apology and support him." Shaw explained his two high ankle sprains on Monday by saying he saved his 7-year-old nephew from drowning. The school received several calls contradicting his story, leading to an investigation. Shaw's legal team is expected to release a statement later on Wednesday.

The investigation into USC redshirt senior DB Josh Shaw's story about saving his drowning nephew is in a "holding pattern."

"It's pretty clear that there's quite a few conflicting stories out there," USC football coach Steve Sarkisian said after practice on Wednesday. "Any information we have been provided up until this point we have pushed along to campus authorities. We're really going to let it play out in their hands up until this point and quite honestly we're in somewhat of a holding pattern. That's where we are at. Anything I do get that I can provide you guys with, I will, believe me, I will." Shaw suffered two high-ankle sprains recently and said he did so while saving his 7-year-old nephew from drowning. The school received calls that contradicted Shaw's story and subsequently launched an inquiry. Shaw is out indefinitely. "None of the players really know about the Josh Shaw situation," Leonard Williams said. "[Sarkisian] basically told us to stay focused and don't let it affect us on Saturday."

NFL media analyst Gil Brandt named Oregon State DE Obum Gwacham as his top sleeper candidate for the 2014 draft.

Brandt's 2012 preseason sleeper was Ziggy Ansah, so pay attention. Brandt loves Gwacham's length and speed; the former wide receiver has both in spades. "It's my last year and I want to contribute to the wins we'll have this season," said Gwacham. "So I thought the place to do that would be on the D-line." Said head coach Mike Riley: "It was one of the easiest transitions I've ever made in a position switch." The 6-foot-5, 236-pound athlete will try to slot into the position vacated by third-round pick Scott Crichton. In addition to impressing Brandt, Gwacham has impressed coaches. "He was coming off the edge clean and running into somebody, that looked pretty good," defensive coordinator Mark Banker said. "Then the true test came when he had to play inside and knock the tight end off and that looked pretty good. He's passed that test."

TCU will rotate redshirt junior Trevone Boykin and transfer senior Matt Joeckel at QB in Saturday's opener against Samford.

"We're playing two quarterbacks," Patterson said at his weekly news conference. Patterson said the two have been "pretty well even" in practice, adding that one has been the better performer in scrimmages and would take the first snap, but declined to identify that signal-caller. Boykin had 1,198 yards passing and a 7/7 TD/INT ratio last year as Casey Pachall's backup/competition. Joeckel backed up Ryan Tannehill and then Johnny Manziel at Texas A&M and bolted for Fort Worth as a graduate student over the winter.

Clemson senior edge rusher Corey Crawford will miss the school's season opener against Georgia due to suspension.

The suspension was handed down in March, but this is just a helpful reminder. Also sitting out the game are offensive lineman David Beasley and backup cornerback Garry Peters for an undisclosed violation of team rules. Crawford and Vic Beasley make up one of the top edge rushing tandems in the country.
