TCU senior QB Casey Pachall is expected to return to the field soon, but not this weekend against Oklahoma State.

The initial prognosis in September stated Pachall would miss eight weeks of action, and around seven weeks have passed. The quarterback broke his left forearm in three different places. Two have healed, while the third has slowed the recovery. TCU is 5-8 with Trevone Boykin as a starter, and 16-3 in games Pachall has started.

Texas Tech sophomore WR Jonathan Giles had 12 catches for 219 receiving yards and two touchdowns in Thursday's 55-19 victory over Kansas.

Per Tech's Twitter feed, Giles' 219 yards receiving were the most at the school since Darrin Moore had 221 against Texas State in 2011. Giles is the breakout receiver the Red Raiders were looking for this summer. He's up to 31 catches for 565 yards and seven touchdowns.

In only three quarters of playing time, Houston senior QB Greg Ward Jr. accrued five touchdowns and threw for a career-high 389 yards in Thursday's 42-14 route of Connecticut.

Ward wasn't able to start last year's upset loss at UConn due to an ankle injury, but he achieved revenge for his teammates in Thursday's sizzling performance. The worry with Ward is never his play. It's with his health. Tonight, he left the game briefly in the second quarter after huge shot on a flea-flicker. With the game firmly out of hand, Kyle Postma took over with 12 minutes remaining.

Texas Tech junior QB Patrick Mahomes exited Thursday's game in the third quarter against Kansas with a right upper arm or throwing shoulder injury.

Mahomes landed flush on that right throwing shoulder following a career-long, 32-yard scamper. Not a natural in the open field, Mahomes hesitated when defenders closed in on him, as though unsure if he should slide or continue charging hard forward. When Jayhawks defenders Fish Smithson and Isaiah Bean converged on him, Mahomes was driven into the turf. He was helped off the field, examined and shipped to the locker room. He came back in the fourth quarter, threw a pass on the sideline, shook his head. All that would suggest that the injury isn't major, but it sure looked violent, similar to the play where Tony Romo broke his collar bone. Nic Shimonek replaced Mahomes behind center.

An NFL executive calls Michigan redshirt sophomore OLB/DB Jabrill Peppers "a bigger, more explosive version of Tyrann Mathieu."

NFL Media's Lance Zierlein made the exact same comp for Peppers this week. As for Daniel Jeremiah, here's his take: "I think Mathieu (5-foot-9, 186 pounds) is a more instinctive player in coverage, but Peppers (6-1, 205, per school measurements) is more physical and he brings an added dimension in the return game. Peppers is a defensive coordinator's dream. You can line him up at multiple spots and he finds ways to affect the game."

Alabama HC Nick Saban indicated that he is unaware whether redshirt freshman QB Blake Barnett will transfer.

AL.com's Matt Zenitz reported on Wednesday that Barnett planned on transferring. Saban did talk with Barnett about his future before Wednesday's practice, but beyond that, he said, "I don't have a final decision on [his transfer]. Nobody has told me that." The 6-foot-5, 211-pound redshirt freshman started the season-opener against USC, but did little offensively before being replaced by Jalen Hurts in the contest. Hurts has run away with the job since then. "Blake is a fine young man, he's done a great job with this program and we'd love to see him be a part of the program in a future," Saban said. "But we also want him to do what's best for him."

Wisconsin junior K Rafael Gaglianone will miss the remainder of the 2016 season after undergoing back surgery.

Gaglianone was initially sidelined near the end of a Week 3 win over Georgia State. He subsequently sat out last weekend's big win over Michigan State. With the 5-foot-11, 219-pounder officially ruled out for the remainder of the season, place-kicking duties will fall to Andrew Endicott. Endicott lacks experience, but for better or worse, this will be his show moving forward.

Bowling Green redshirt freshman QB James Morgan has been named the starter for Saturday's game against Eastern Michigan.

This shouldn't be considered a huge surprise, as now-deposed starter James Knapke had completed just 50% of his passes and held a 3/9 TD/INT ratio. The 6-foot-4, 218-pound Morgan hasn't exactly impressed in his own limited work this season, as he has tossed an interception in all three of the games in which he saw the field. No touchdowns, either. There is upside here, though. ESPN graded Morgan as a four-star recruit for the 2015 cycle.

Georgia junior RB Nick Chubb (ankle) did not practice on Wednesday.

Chubb continues to be hobbled by the left ankle sprain sustained in Saturday's loss to Ole Miss. HC Kirby Smart labeled him as "day-to-day" in his weekly radio show this week, saying, "Trying to get him back. We want him back bad. Don’t know if he’s going to be back." Smart added that the 5-foot-10, 228-pound junior "has got to recover some." Sony Michel would handle lead carries against Tennessee on Saturday if Chubb is unable to play.

Penn State HC James Franklin received a vote of confidence from AD Sandy Barbour on Wednesday.

"He's not on the hot seat, and he's not going to be on the hot seat in December. James is going to be our football coach," said Barbour. While this hasn't been an out-and-out disaster of a season for Franklin and the 2-2 Nittany Lions, his team was flattened 49-10 by Michigan on Saturday. A Happy Valley showdown with Minnesota shows next on their schedule. "I believe in where this football program is going under James Franklin," Barbour said, "and I think he's going to be our football coach, period."

Alabama senior edge rusher Tim Williams was arrested early Thursday morning on charges of carrying a pistol without a permit.

Per AL.com's Matt Zenitz, Williams was arrested around 2:00 a.m. Thursday morning after officers noticed the smell of marijuana emanating from his vehicle. A passenger in the vehicle claimed that the drug was not Williams'. Upon searching the car, an unlicensed pistol was found under the 6-foot-4, 237-pound senior's seat. If all of this sounds vaguely familiar, that is probably because star tackle Cam Robinson found himself in a similar situation in May. It is not yet known whether Williams will be allowed to play against Kentucky this weekend, but a suspension is likely, here.

Alabama redshirt freshman QB Blake Barnett will transfer.

The human experience can change drastically in one month's time. Just ask Barnett. At the beginning of September, he was the starting quarterback for the defending national champs. Today, not four weeks later, he seeks a new home. The former five-star recruit lost his gig to electrifying freshman Jalen Hurts and was looking at mopup duty until graduation unless he left. So he, you know, left. And with that, redshirt junior Cooper Bateman is now the Tide's backup quarterback.
