Miami sophomore RB Duke Johnson will miss the remainder of the season due to a broken right ankle.

He will have surgery this week. Johnson's ankle was twisted at the bottom of a pile, but ESPN said the initial diagnosis was an ankle sprain before Johnson was taken in for further testing. We love his running style, but Johnson seems to get dinged up every week. He finishes the season with 823 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 122 carries.

ESPN's Todd McShay writes there is "a lot of buzz surrounding" Mississippi State redshirt junior T Martinas Rankin.

"He has the length to handle speed off the edge and the athletic ability to mirror inside pass-rushing moves," McShay explained, adding that Rankin has pivotal matchups against Georgia and Auburn coming up in order to prove his game against top-end pass rushers. Rankin has spent less than two seasons at the FBS level, but that did not stop players like Ryan Ramczyk and Garett Bolles from landing in the first round last season. As Miss State continues to win, more focus will be on their offensive line.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen spoke to one NFL GM who believes if Wyoming QB Josh Allen played for USC, Clemson or Oklahoma, "they'd all be talking like there hasn't been a better passer in years."

Stunning. The anonymous general manager says his only concern about Allen is possible injury due to being too competitive with a lack of talent around him this season. "Enough teams will work past the garbage you'll hear," the general manager said via Mortensen. The decision maker went on to say there is "no comparison" with his size, arm, skill set, mobility, good mind and competitiveness. It is absolutely amazing that this general manager does not even touch on Allen's ability, or inability, to handle a pass rush, since it is the great differentiator at the position.

Yahoo Sports' Pete Thamel spoke to one scout who believes Penn State junior RB Saquon Barkley is better than Ezekiel Elliott.

The scout obviously remains anonymous. "Saquon Barkley is a different guy with an extra gear. He’ll never get caught from behind. Zeke doesn’t get caught often, but he can," the scout told Thamel. We understand wanting to compare Barkley to the top running back prospect in recent memory, but in the end Barkley will also be selected very early in the draft, likely in the top 10, so does it even matter? Barkley is an outstanding talent. So is Elliott. Our biggest question is if Barkley can pass protect like Elliott could out of Ohio State.

LSU junior RB Derrius Guice (knee) has been ruled out for Saturday's game against Syracuse.

Early in the practice week, LSU HC Ed Orgeron termed Guice's injury as "minor." That would appear to have been either a hopeful statement or a coy statement, as Guice did not practice on either Tuesday or Wednesday and has now officially been nixed for Saturday's showdown with the Orange. Darrel Williams will start in his place on Saturday now that the star junior back has been ruled out. There is no current timetable for Guice's return to action.

New Mexico senior QB Lamar Jordan (concussion) has been ruled out for Saturday's game against Tulsa.

Jordan (6'0/190) took a scary late hit in the first half of Thursday's loss to Boise State, as he was driven into the turf on the play in question and looked obviously wobbly when walking off the field. Third-stringer Coltin Gerhart took over for him to finish out that loss (second-string QB Tevaka Tuioti is also dealing with a concussion). Gerhart will again start against Tulsa on Saturday. There is no current timetable for Jordan's return.

Utah redshirt senior WR Darren Carrington compared sophomore QB Tyler Huntley to former Oregon QB Marcus Mariota.

"He’s not up there yet, but he reminds me of Marcus a lot, how he can throw off the run and throw off his back foot 70 yards and make people miss. He’s just a ballplayer," said Carrington, who played with Mariota back in 2014, during the quarterback's Heisman Trophy-winning season. In three games this season, the 6-foot-1, 190-pound Huntley has thrown for 868 yards (72.1% completions, 7.8 YPA) with a 5/2 TD/INT ratio. The sophomore gunslinger has also rushed for 212 yards and three additional scores. To give some context, those three contests came against North Dakota, BYU and San Jose State. He should have a relatively easy time with Arizona on Friday, too, before the schedule tightens up with back-to-back contests against Stanford and USC.

Oklahoma president David Boren will retire at the end of the 2017-2018 academic year.

Boren has been among the most vocal school presidents on the college football landscape. He will be officially retiring on June 30, assuming that Oklahoma has settled on a new president by then (if not, he will stay on until they find a replacement). Boren has served as school president since 1994.

Boise State junior QB Brett Rypien (head) is probable for Friday's game against Virginia.

Rypien was injured in a Week 2 loss to Washington State and subsequently sat out a Week 3 win over New Mexico last Thursday. With a clean practice week to date, he has now been medically cleared to tango with the Cavaliers on Friday. Both Rypien and Montell Cozart are expected to play against Virginia, but Rypien will be the man taking the bulk of snaps.

Louisville senior RB Jeremy Smith (toe) will pursue a medical redshirt to return for a fifth year.

This according to his father, Craig Williams. Smith (6'2/224) suffered a fractured toe during practice and was limited in the opener against Purdue. Louisville decided to shut him down after the game. Since he only played part of one game, he has a good case for the medical hardship waiver. The Cardinals will lose RBs Reggie Bonnafon and Malik Williams to graduation after this season.

Texas sophomore QB Shane Buechele (shoulder) took 60-percent of the snaps with the first team on Tuesday.

Freshman Sam Ehlinger took the rest. Speaking about his tenuous quarterback situation, HC Tom Herman said: "No Wally Pipp for the moment." In other words, as he's said before, Herman doesn't anticipate Buechele losing his job due to an injury. Buechele has missed the last two games with a bruised throwing shoulder suffered in the opening-game loss to Maryland. The Horns are on a much-needed bye this week, giving Buechele more time to heal.

Michigan redshirt sophomore WR/CB Drake Harris is planning on joining Michigan's basketball team for the upcoming season.

The 6-foot-4, 188-pounder was a consensus top-100 basketball recruit in high school before he decided to focus solely on the gridiron. He would have two seasons of eligibility remaining for the basketball team. It seems that Harris wouldn't count towards the hoops teams' scholarship allotment this year; for clerical reasons, he'd still count against football.
