Minnesota senior WR Derrick Engel has been diagnosed with a torn ACL, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

The injury, sustained in Sunday's practice while preparing for Saturday's huge tilt against Wisconsin, marks a terribly disappointing end to Engel's season and collegiate career. Engel, quarterback Philip Nelson's favorite target, led the team with 25 receptions for 401 yards and five touchdowns.

NFL media analyst Gil Brandt named Oregon State DE Obum Gwacham as his top sleeper candidate for the 2014 draft.

Brandt's 2012 preseason sleeper was Ziggy Ansah, so pay attention. Brandt loves Gwacham's length and speed; the former wide receiver has both in spades. "It's my last year and I want to contribute to the wins we'll have this season," said Gwacham. "So I thought the place to do that would be on the D-line." Said head coach Mike Riley: "It was one of the easiest transitions I've ever made in a position switch." The 6-foot-5, 236-pound athlete will try to slot into the position vacated by third-round pick Scott Crichton. In addition to impressing Brandt, Gwacham has impressed coaches. "He was coming off the edge clean and running into somebody, that looked pretty good," defensive coordinator Mark Banker said. "Then the true test came when he had to play inside and knock the tight end off and that looked pretty good. He's passed that test."

TCU will rotate redshirt junior Trevone Boykin and transfer senior Matt Joeckel at QB in Saturday's opener against Samford.

"We're playing two quarterbacks," Patterson said at his weekly news conference. Patterson said the two have been "pretty well even" in practice, adding that one has been the better performer in scrimmages and would take the first snap, but declined to identify that signal-caller. Boykin had 1,198 yards passing and a 7/7 TD/INT ratio last year as Casey Pachall's backup/competition. Joeckel backed up Ryan Tannehill and then Johnny Manziel at Texas A&M and bolted for Fort Worth as a graduate student over the winter.

Clemson senior edge rusher Corey Crawford will miss the school's season opener against Georgia due to suspension.

The suspension was handed down in March, but this is just a helpful reminder. Also sitting out the game are offensive lineman David Beasley and backup cornerback Garry Peters for an undisclosed violation of team rules. Crawford and Vic Beasley make up one of the top edge rushing tandems in the country.

Michigan redshirt freshman RB Ty Isaac's appeal for immediately eligibility was denied by the NCAA last week.

Michigan is appealing the ruling. Isaac transferred from USC after spending just one season there. His waiver was applied for on the grounds of being closer to Isaac's ailing mother. He rushed for 236 yards on 40 carries and two touchdowns last season.

Oklahoma HC Bob Stoops seemed to indicate that redshirt sophomore WR Dorial Green-Beckham intends to return and play for the school in 2015.

"That isn’t something that’s been decided," Stoops said of DGB. "Right now it seems that he wants to do that and is heading that way and we want to support him in every possible way." Green-Beckham will be eligible to practice and attend classes all year despite his eligibility appeal being denied. We still think it is 50-50, at best, that DGB actually stays and plays for the Sooners in 2015. His talent is incredible.

Florida HC Will Muschamp praised sophomore RB Kelvin Taylor's third down ability.

Muschamp specifically pointed out Taylor's improved receiving skills and pass protection ability. Taylor, the son of Jaguar great Fred, starting earning a large number of touches in the second half of last season, producing 508 yards and four touchdowns on 111 carries. He should be a large part of the Gators' offense this year.

Stanford redshirt sophomore Barry Sanders Jr. has been named the school's No. 2 RB.

Senior Kelsey Young will start despite missing a large portion of camp due to an ankle injury. Sanders Jr. saw most of his action at punt returner, but also took five carries for 34 yards and a touchdown. The few times he had the ball in his hands, however, Sanders Jr. seemed to channel his father's ankle breaking skills.

Washington redshirt senior edge rusher Hau'oli Kikaha is not afraid of tearing his left ACL for the third time.

"There was a lot of mental growth, the injuries taught me to be patient," Kikaha told CBS Sports' Dane Brugler. "...The injuries taught me to invest more in the program, allowed me to get coached up in the film room." The edge rusher discussed his new role at Buck linebacker in the Huskies' odd front defense. "The 3-4 allows more 1-on-1 opportunities so I can make plays and be freed up. I spent a lot of time at the "4i" position and strong end last year so it's not too far off." Brugler spoke with one NFC North scout who said Kikaha's medicals will be imperative to his evaluation.

According to one anonymous college football assistant that does not have an affiliation to the Gators, Miami "started a war" after allegedly turning in former Florida assistant coach Joker Phillips for a recruiting violation, per SI's Pete Thamel and Thayer Evans.

The specific infraction, known as the "bump rule," prohibits coaches from talking to recruits during a dead recruiting period. "It’s bull----," one assistant said to Thamel and Evans. "Miami bumps and talks to kids more than anybody. They’ve started a war. They better watch out. You started messing with livelihoods and s--- is going to get dirty." Miami has previously been hit with major infractions and penalties form the NCAA.

Stanford junior WR Ty Montgomery is expected to start the season opener against UC Davis after recovering from shoulder surgery.

Montgomery underwent right shoulder surgery last February and also hurt his knee in the Rose Bowl. The early reports stated Montgomery would miss the first two games of the season, but Montgomery was not satisfied with that projection. Rotoworld contributor Cian Fahey compared Montgomery to Tedd Ginn Jr.

Oregon senior CB Ifo Ekpre-Olomu is expected to return punts.

Ifo is listed as the top punt returner on the Ducks' two-deep, with redshirt senior receiver Keanon Lowe and redshirt freshman receiver Darren Carrington behind him. Many consider Ifo the top draft-eligible corner prospect in college football (don't sleep on Marcus Peters), so adding some return ability would not be the worst thing for his evaluation.
