Auburn OL coach J.B. Grimes believes redshirt sophomore T Greg Robinson could be the No. 1 pick in the 2015 draft.

"I think, could possibly be a year from now, the first player picked overall," Grimes said. "Without a doubt, I think he's that kind of player. I don't think that'll happen this year, but he's obviously a great talent." Those around the team aren't sure what Robinson will do regarding this year's draft, and the massive offensive tackle told reporters he has not made a decision at this time.

Oregon graduate QB Vernon Adams has been named the team's starting quarterback for the 2015 season.

Adams was battling with Jeff Lockie to start for the Ducks in the team's first post-Marcus Mariota season. That he won the job is all the more impressive for the fact that he just started practicing two weeks ago. He had to resolve an academic issue prior to joining the team. The 6-foot, 190-pound graduate transfer threw for 10,438 total yards and 110 touchdowns over three seasons with Eastern Washington. Speaking of Eastern Washington, they're Oregon's opening opponent.

Illinois has fired HC Tim Beckman for allegations of player mistreatment.

A statement released by the school gave specifics, most of which revolved around Beckman's treatment of injured athletes. In part, it read: "During a preliminary briefing from the external reviewers, [athletic director Mike Thomas] said he learned of efforts to deter injury reporting and influence medical decisions that pressured players to avoid or postpone medical treatment and continue playing despite injuries." Because Beckman has been fired for cause, he will not be paid the remaining $3.1 million left on the final two years of his contract. He closes out his tenure with the Illini with a 4-20 record in the Big Ten and a 12-25 overall record. Offensive coordinator Bill Cubit will serve as interim coach for the 2015 season. Illinois opens the season against Kent State next Friday.

According to Florida HC Jim McElwain, sophomore QB Treon Harris and redshirt freshman QB Will Grier will both play in the team's season-opening tilt with New Mexico State.

"Like I've said, and I mean this, you guys keep pushing for this, but there isn't a timetable," said McElwain, channeling his inner Nick Saban by referring to the media as "you guys." The head coach is moving from one of the most productive offenses in the country at Colorado State to whatever it is that Florida currently has in its bag. Harris completed a shade under 50% of his passes a season ago, while Grier missed the season completely after suffering a back injury.

Florida true freshman T Martez Ivey will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery on Friday.

Ivey was a likely starter on the offensive line, but the Gators will have to change course quickly. Head coach Jim McElwain declined to discuss specifics, but said that the 6-foot-5, 271-pound true freshman's injury was "a pre-existing thing that was kind of bothering him." A silver lining--McElwain indicated that we could see Ivey again this season. He just doesn't know when. Coming out of high school, the tackle was ranked as the No. 4 overall recruit in the country by Rivals.

Tennessee senior S LaDarrell McNeil will be out an indefinite amount of time with what HC Butch Jones is terming "neck instability."

This is a no good, very bad day to be a fan of the Volunteers. Earlier today, the team suspended leading receiver Alton "Pig" Howard for the season-opener due to an infraction. Two of their secondary receivers are undergoing knee scopes on Friday. And now McNeil, one of the veteran cogs on defense, will be out indefinitely with a neck injury. Said HC Butch Jones, "Very, very unfortunate. I feel for him. He’s had some neck instability there, so he’s undergoing further examination. But he will be out an extended period of time, and it could be a lengthy period of time." While the loss of the 6-foot-, 206-pounder stings, Tennessee does have a depth of talent at safety, which should at least somewhat cushion the blow.

FSU freshman DE Josh Sweat (knee) will be available to play in the team's season-opening game against Texas State.

Sweat's recovery from a torn left ACL and a dislocation in that same knee--he underwent surgery in October--has been nothing short of remarkable. In March, HC Jimbo Fisher admitted that he wasn't sure if the former No. 1 recruit in the country would play at all in 2015. Oh how times have changed. On Thursday, Fisher indicated he had no qualms with the prospect of playing the 6-foot-5, 236-pounder so soon after the devastating injury, noting that Sweat "hasn't missed a practice, hasn't missed nothing."

Senior edge rusher Ishaq Williams' appeal to play for Notre Dame this season was denied by the NCAA.

Williams was involved in last season's academic fraud investigation. At least one of the other players involved was cleared for the season, but Williams was not. It is unclear if Williams will try to play at a different level other than the FBS in 2015, or if he will sit out a second straight year and enter the 2016 NFL Draft.
Aug 27 - 7:27 PM

Arkansas senior RB Jonathan Williams said that he will "most likely" leave school for the 2016 NFL Draft.

Williams is expected to miss the 2015 collegiate season with a left foot injury. He could still theoretically take a redshirt and return to the Razorbacks next season, but this does not seem a probable path for the 6-foot, 223-pound senior. Williams opted not to split for the draft last season, when he was projected as a possible third-round pick. It's unlikely that he suits up at any point over the next four months, but the senior tried to put on an optimistic face, saying "I'm still definitely 100 percent [part of Arkansas' team], so later in the season if I'm fully cleared and I feel good about being able to play and being healthy, I'll definitely try to play."

Ohio State sophomore WR Noah Brown will miss the 2015 season with a broken leg.

Brown will have surgery on Thursday to correct the injury suffered near the end of practice on Wednesday. The receiver lost around 25 lbs during the offseason, and coaches and teammates had praised his development, with corner Eli Apple calling brown the most improved receiver on the team. OSU will already be without three receivers in the season opener due to suspension and lost Devin Smith to the NFL. Expect Michael Thomas and Braxton Miller to play huge roles this season.

TCU redshirt senior WR Josh Doctson is expected to play versus Minnesota in the season opener despite being limited in preseason camp with an undisclosed injury.

Doctson is TCU's top receiving option, and his skills match up well with Trevone Boykin's strengths. Doctson broke his hand during spring camp and has missed time with another injury, so his offseason has been spotty. He might be the top contested catch receiver in the country in terms of acrobatic plays. Doctson can threaten defenses with three routes: slant, vertical and comeback.

UCLA named freshman Josh Rosen the school's starting QB.

Those close to the program believed this would be the outcome all along. Rosen was widely considered a 5-star recruit by services and even the top high school player at his position. UCLA lost longtime starter Brett Hundley to the NFL and will move forward with another likely three year starter. That is, if Rosen plays up to expectations. The freshman was in a competition with Jerry Neuheisel.
