Auburn coach Gus Malzahn is "very much a top candidate" for the Cleveland Browns head coach opening, according to CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora.

"Vandy's James Franklin (is also) in the mix," tweeted La Canfora. "One of them or (Patriots offensive coordinator Josh) McDaniels (is) expected to get that job." Malzahn was named AP coach of the year last week after leading the Tigers to the BCS Championship one season after Auburn finished 3-9.

ESPN's Brett McMurphy reports that Northwestern HC Pat Fitzgerald has been awarded a contract extension which will keep him at the school for "at least the next 10 seasons."

The exact monetary and length figures for Fitzgerald's extension have not yet been disclosed. He has been manning the Northwestern ship since 2006 and has compiled a 77-62 record over the last 10 seasons. During the past campaign, the Wildcats finished 6-6 in the regular season before coming through with a win over Pitt in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl.

Georgia has released four-star 2017 T D'Antne Demery from his letter of intent following his domestic violence arrest on Saturday.

Demery had been expected to enroll at Georgia in June. That will no longer be happening. The 6-foot-5, 290-pounder was arrested after allegedly getting into a physical confrontation with his girlfriend following an escalating argument on Saturday. Whether Demery finds another collegiate home at the FBS level before August camp is very much an open question.

Draft Analyst's Tony Pauline hears that the Cowboys are targeting USC CB Adoree' Jackson with their first-round pick.

Sitting at pick No. 28, the Cowboys are squarely in the projected draft sweet zone for Jackson. According to Pauline, they are also intrigued by Clemson's Cordrea Tankersly, who could be a Day 2 option for them should Jackson either have already flown off the board or they instead opt to take a first-round pass-rusher. Along with the Cowboys, the Texans, Eagles, Browns, Bucs and Titans reportedly all had visits with Jackson during the draft process.

LSU redshirt senior QB Danny Etling underwent back surgery

Etling has been dealing with back pain for several months. This surgery is expected to relieve him of that discomfort. LSU HC Ed Orgeron referred to it as a "minor back procedure." Despite his recurring pain, Etling was never held out of spring practice, though he did struggle in Saturday's spring game. He should be ready for the start of August camp barring a complication. All signs at this juncture point toward the redshirt senior starting for the Tigers during the coming season.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Michigan S Jabrill Peppers tested positive for a diluted sample at the NFL Scouting Combine.

News of Alabama LB Reuben Foster's diluted sample broke last week. He has company in that club. Per Schefter, the NFL has informed all of its teams about Peppers' failed test. The 5-foot-11, 213-pounder has yet to offer comment on this report. He was being viewed as a borderline first-round pick prior to this news, but the first round is probably out the window, now. Given the lateness of the date, it is difficult to tell just how far this failed test might cause Peppers to slide. We would be surprised if he dropped all the way to Day 3, though.

Walter Football's Charlie Campbell reports that the Saints are considering taking a quarterback in the first round.

The Saints hold picks Nos. 11 and 32, the latter coming to them as part of their Brandin Cooks trade to the Patriots. Writes Campbell, "Sources say that Payton likes all four of the top quarterback prospects." However, he adds that " it sounded as if it was more unlikely than likely." While a rookie quarterback would have the luxury of developing behind Drew Brees, the team is also desperately in need of defensive help after ranking 27th in total defense for the past campaign.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport cites multiple sources stating the 49ers are still considering a QB at No. 2 overall.

"Taking a quarterback high would likely end any chance at Kirk Cousins," Rapoport notes, which is important since so many believe that is where Cousins ultimately ends up in 2018. Every team in the top five has now been linked with a quarterback, if not two.

According to Ravens beat writer Jeff Zrebiec the team hopes to build a "dominant" offensive line like the Cowboys.

This screams Forrest Lamp to us, after the team lost Kelechi Osemele prior to the 2016 season and starting center Jeremy Zuttah and right tackle Ricky Wagner this offseason. That is a lot of experience. Lamp can play center and guard, and some teams might even keep him at tackle. He might be the Ravens' version of Zack Martin. Garett Bolles and Cam Robinson are also possibilities.

The MMQB's Peter King writes the Ravens and Titans "would be happy to move down" from picks No. 16 and No. 18, respectively.

King was the first to break the Titans-Rams trade last year for the No. 1 pick, so his connections to the Titans are strong. Both teams have obvious needs at corner and receiver, yet the board might not align at the picks. In the latest Rotoworld Football Podcast, Josh Norris suggested Chidobe Awuzie for the Titans if they trade out of the pick.

Rotoworld's Josh Norris states Eagles fans should not FSU RB Dalvin Cook to be the pick at No. 14.

Norris believes OSU corner Gareon Conley and Missouri edge rusher Charles Harris as the likeliest picks, with Christian McCaffrey, Derek Barnett and Jon Allen as other possible options. Obviously other prospects could be in the mix, but that is Norris' conclusion based on information he has heard. That isn't to say the Eagles don't like Cook. They certainly might, but No. 14 might be too rich.

The MMQB's Peter King spoke with one GM who said he has never been a part of a draft with this many medical red flags.

We can throw in a few prospects who have medical questions base don previous surgeries: Dalvin Cook, Ryan Ramczyk, Takk McKinley, Reuben Foster, Sidney Jones and Fabian Moreau, among others. Medical red flags take prospects off boards, leading them to drop more than expected.
