Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel turned down "several lucrative marketing offers" during Super Bowl week, choosing to train in San Diego instead.

"His focus remains 100% on football," Manziels agent told Ian Rapoport. Many companies choose to sponsor athlete's trips to the Super Bowl with some kind of compensation attached, but Manziel is preparing for the draft process instead.

Rutgers redshirt junior RB Paul James reminds CBS Sports' Dane Brugler of "a not-as-cut version of Chargers back Ryan Mathews."

James showed "why he has a future at the next level," wrote Brugler, by running for 173 yards and three touchdowns in last week's 41-38 win over Washington State. "James did an outstanding job lowering and squaring his pads, running with purpose and finishing each run," Brugler wrote. "He stayed balanced through contact and although he's not overly shifty or explosive, Ryan showed the start/stop quickness to cut back, using vision to find secondary lanes. He clearly loves running north-south with forward lean and keeps his legs churning through contact, making him a chore to tackle. James led Rutgers with 881 yards a year ago and is well on his way to breaking the 1,000-plus barrier this season. And NFL scouts have taken notice." The 6-foot, 210-pounder runs a 4.62 forty.

Utah State redshirt junior OLB Kyler Fackrell tore his right ACL in Sunday's game against Tennessee and is out for the season.

The Aggies' had a devastating weekend, getting punted by Tennessee as a small underdog, seeing Chuckie Keeton's Heisman hopes go up in smoke, and then losing their havoc-wreaking star outside linebacker for the season. "The versatile linebacker entered the season as a possible early round pick next spring, but this setback puts those projections on hold," CBS Sports' Dane Brugler wrote. ESPN's Mel Kiper listed Fackrell at No. 18 overall on his initial big board. Perhaps Fackrell will return for his fifth-year senior campaign, after all.

USC redshirt junior QB Cody Kessler did not practice on Tuesday after undergoing toe surgery to fix a case of staph infection, according to Inside USC's Scott Wolf.

Kessler told reporters the injury was minor and he will return on Wednesday. Some pointed out the quarterback was walking gingerly through the tunnel after the school beat Fresno State 52-13. Kessler looked pretty impressive and continued his improvements that began during the second half of last season.

Tennessee redshirt senior LT Jacob Gilliam will miss the remainder of the season due to a torn ACL.

The Vols are starting an entirely new offensive line, and Gilliam will now need to be replaced on the left side. The former walk-on had never started a game until the season opener against Utah State.

South Carolina HC Steve Spurrier now believes junior RB Mike Davis will play against ECU.

Spurrier previously stated Davis was "sort of doubtful" for the game, but that has obviously changed. The running back was held in check for the school's season opening loss against Texas A&M and did not start the contest. Davis has been dealing with a rib injury.

Fox Sports' Bruce Feldman hears from a source that UCLA redshirt junior C Jake Brendel will miss at least one more game due to a knee injury.

Note that Feldman adds it will be "at least" the next game, so more is still an option. "No matter how big and strong (Brett Hundley) is, he might not last this season if UCLA doesn't get its issues up front sorted out," Feldman writes. The longtime college football writer does point out UCLA started 275 lbs freshman guard Najee Toran. We would note Hundley has his own issues when pressured, so the combination could be a bad one.

Baylor redshirt junior DL Shawn Oakman totaled two sacks and another assisted tackle for loss in the school's 45-0 win over SMU.

Oakman has been a longtime favorite of Rotoworld's Josh Norris, and his performance on Sunday showed why. The massive defensive lineman mainly came off the bench last year, but he is a full time starter in 2014. From the first play, Oakman lined up in a three-point stance on the outside of SMU's offensive tackle and went on to play inside as a defensive tackle and stand up on the edge. Oakman's combination of strong hands, length and closing speed is what makes him so disruptive.

Texas redshirt senior C Dominic Espinosa suffered a broken right ankle against North Texas and will almost certainly miss the remainder of the 2014 season.

Texas lost quarterback David Ash to another head injury in the same game. Including the school's latest win over North Texas, Espinosa had started 40 straight games for the Horns, every contest after redshirt his first year in Austin.

One NFC personnel member texted NFL media report Albert Breer that Texas A&M OC Jake Spavital "will be a head coach sooner rather than later."

"He has 'it' in spades," the NFL staffer added. Another NFL personnel man concurred after Breer tweeted the quote. Spavital is only 29-years-old, but obviously many NFL and college decision makers were impressed by the quick offensive turnaround he managed to produce with the Aggies losing Johnny Manziel, Mike Evans and Jake Matthews.

Baylor redshirt senior QB Bryce Petty was diagnosed with two cracks in the transverse processes of his back and is considered day-to-day.

Petty wasn't his usual sharp self on Sunday night against SMU before getting yanked at halftime in a blowout, completing 13-of-23 throws for 161 yards (he also rushed for 21 yards and a touchdown). The star signal-caller missed open receivers downfield and was seen grimacing. "When you’re throwing and I can’t torque [it's frustrating]," Petty said. FOXSports' Bruce Feldman reported that Petty’s injury heals on its own, so Petty's availability will ultimately come down to how well he can tolerate the pain. It's possible the Bears could scale back on read options and deep drops in the next few weeks to protect their Heisman candidate; Baylor has one of the conference's best offensive lines. Petty says he'll play on Saturday against Northwestern State. The Bears get Buffalo on Friday, Sept. 12, and then are off until traveling to Iowa State on Sept. 27. It's one of the softest September schedules of any Big 12 squad.

In an outstanding debut as starter, Louisville redshirt sophomore Will Gardner completed 20-of-28 passes for 206 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in Monday's 31-13 victory.

Gardner completed 8-of-12 passes for 112 yards and two touchdowns last season as Teddy Bridgewater's backup. With Teddy off to the Vikings via the first round, Gardner was handed the keys to Bobby Petrino's offense, and he left tire marks on the backs of Hurricanes' defensive backs this evening, even without stud WR DeVante Parker and steady veteran RB Michael Dyer, both of whom were ruled out with injuries. Gardner, whose namesake on The Good Wife is played by Josh Charles, of Sports Night and Dead Poets Society fame, has prototypical size at 6-foot-5 and 226 pounds. NFL scouts hadn't paid him much attention before tonight, but that's about to change.
