Michigan T Taylor Lewan ran two unofficial forty times of 4.85 and 4.88 seconds at the NFL Combine.

Lewan also had 10 yard splits of 1.64 and 1.70 seconds. We are a bit surprised by these athletic times, but it is certainly nice to see. Lewan has a chance at being the third tackle selected in May.

LSU DC Dave Aranda said that the coaching staff will try to clarify the playing future of junior edge rusher Arden Key when they meet next week.

"Arden's looking good. We get back together next week with a full staff. ... I anticipate at that time that we'll hear about Arden's direction and where he's going and whether he'll be with us or not," Aranda said. He added, "I'm very hopeful he will be." The 6-foot-6, 255-pounder -- a potential top-10 pick next spring -- left the team for personal reasons in mid-February. He tweeted in late April that he had no plans of sitting out the 2017 season and his father indicated that his absence is not due to injury. "I think we have a defense with Arden and a defense without Arden. There's two very separate entities there," Aranda said. "I'm pulling for the one with."

Northwestern junior WR Solomon Vault is expected to miss the 2017 season after undergoing lower-body surgery.

Per a team spokesman, Vault will likely take a redshirt for the coming season. After transitioning over from running back to wide receiver last offseason, the 5-foot-10, 190-pounder logged a 15-164-2 receiving line in 2016. His loss will be felt less in the receiving game and more in the return game -- Vault averaged 24.3 yards on his 23 returns last season, good for third-best in the Big Ten. His five career kick returns for touchdown are a school record.

Auburn freshman signee RB Alaric Williams didn't qualify academically and has signed with Garden City Community College.

Williams posted on Twitter that he was GCCC-bound because he "came up short academically." The 6-foot, 195-pound Williams, a four-star recruit, was ranked as the No. 12 player in the state of Alabama this past cycle. Based on his message on social media, he appears to be taking his schoolwork more seriously, good news for his prospects of moving back to the FBS ranks in 2018. "School is not something you play with," Williams wrote, adding, "I wish I would’ve realized that from the day I started high school."

Fedora's new deal will pay him $2.29 million for the coming season. He is set to make $3 million in each of the final three years of his extension. Fedora has guided the Tar Heels to a 40-25 overall record during his five years at the helm of the ship.

Vanderbilt received a verbal commit from four-star 2018 LB Alston Orji.

"This is an excellent pickup for Vanderbilt, both from an ability and need standpoint," writes ESPN's Craig Haubert, who adds that Orji "could arrive with an opportunity to quickly compete for playing time or at least add quality depth." Haubert comps him to former Florida LB Jarrad Davis and notes that "like Davis, (Orji) can be an explosive and physical defender with the tools to be a strong three-down contributor." The 6-foot-2, 216-pounder ranks as the Worldwide Leader's No. 288 overall prospect. Rivals is even more optimistic about his collegiate potential, slotting him in at No. 90 on their 2018 master list.

An NFC scout called Penn State junior RB Saquon Barkley "special."

"He's special," said an NFC scout. "He is as complete as they come at the position." NFL.com analyst Bucky Brooks likens Barkley to a "young Frank Gore." Brooks says the 5-foot-11, 223-pound Barkley's "uncanny ability to shift from power to finesse is uncommon, which is why running back coaches will salivate over his game at the next level." To the scout's point about Barkley's well-rounded game, Brooks also praises the prospect's skills as a receiver out of the backfield and his blocking ability. "Although he hasn't put the finishing touches on his collegiate resume, Barkley certainly has the talent and potential to be a dominant player at the next level," Brooks wrote.

NFL.com named LSU junior CB Donte Jackson the fastest player in college football.

We're not going to argue. Jackson has clocked a 4.24s 40-yard dash. But that's just the start. He posted a 10.22s 100-meter dash last month at the SEC Relays, and a 6.63s 60-meter dash at the 2016 SEC Indoor Championships. His track coach at LSU, Dennis Shaver, has compared Jackson to former Tigers speedster Trindon Holliday, while former teammate and Jets first-round pick Jamal Adams has described Jackson's speed as "God-given." The 5-foot-11, 173-pound Jackson will assume Tre'Davious White's role as LSU's top cornerback this fall.

Illinois head coach Lovie Smith dismissed sophomore G Darta Lee.

Lee was one of three players dismissed from the program after being charged with home invasion and robbery. Each faces a mandatory prison sentence of 4-15 years on each count if found guilty. Lee was the first true freshman offensive lineman to start a season opener for Illinois in 20 years.

Army junior RB Tyler Campbell transferred to Elon.

One of Army’s best offensive skill guys -- Campbell ran for 326 yards on 34 carries (a ridiculous 9.6 yards per carry) as a starting slotback last year -- Campbell intends to switch positions at his new school. The Phoenix listed him as a cornerback and returner. Campbell is eligible to play immediately for the FCS school and has two seasons of eligibility left.

Mississippi State received a verbal commitment from four-star 2018 QB Jalen Mayden.

Mayden sided with the Bulldogs over Baylor, Louisville, Nebraska and Tennessee. He is intrigued by the prospect of working with Mississippi State HC Dan Mullen, saying, "I liked to see the progression that [his quarterbacks] had from their freshman year to their senior year, and I feel like he really knows how to make a good quarterback." And in a note of synchronicity, the 6-foot-2, 196-pounder actually compared his game to that of Dak Prescott last summer. Scout.com ranks Mayden as the No. 100 overall prospect in the 2018 cycle, with outlet analyst Greg Powers noting that he "can pull the ball down and run as his stats suggest, but he is more of pass first quarterback who will make his reads and progressions in the pocket."
May 23 - 9:38 PM

Nebraska received a verbal commitment from four-star 2018 ATH Mario Goodrich.

While Goodrich does a little bit of everything at Lee's Summit West (Missouri) -- he has worked as a receiver, cornerback and kick returner -- Nebraska views the 6-foot-2, 180-pounder as a corner. Rivals' Nate Clouse notes that Goodrich "has terrific ball reactions which combined with his size and length make him a pass break-up and interception machine." That assessment rings true based on his work as a high school junior in 2016, when he notched seven interceptions while breaking up 12 passes. Goodrich ranks as Rivals' No. 202 overall prospect for the 2018 cycle and gives Nebraska 12 commitments in the class. Sleep on the Cornhuskers' recruiting work at your own peril -- they currently sit at No. 6 in Rivals' team rankings. Only Ohio State (No. 4) and Penn State (No. 2) rank higher in the Big Ten.
