ESPN's Mel Kiper doesn't believe the Jaguars will pass on South Carolina edge player Jadeveon Clowney if he's still available at No. 3.

In a recently published mock draft, Kiper, who currently sees Khalil Mack and Greg Robinson as the top two picks, presents a scenario in which the Jaguars could have their pick of the draft's top three QB prospects -- Blake Bortles (UCF), Teddy Bridgewater (Louisville), and Johnny Manziel (Texas A&M) -- and pass on them all. "The Jags decided to re-sign Chad Henne, and while I don't think they did so based on the idea he's an immovable object at starter, I do think they believe they can win football games with him starting if they improve everywhere else," wrote Kiper. "And Clowney certainly improves a pass rush that we've been talking about as a draft priority for way too long."

West Virginia redshirt junior QB Will Grier announced that he'll return for his senior season in 2018.

This is the right decision, as Grier would have likely been a Day 3 afterthought had he declared. Grier (6'2/215) could improve his draft stock with a big senior season. And while he won't magically be bigger this time next year, he could cut down on some mistakes and dispel lingering decision-making concerns. He was outstanding in his first year as the Mountaineers quarterback, going 250-of-388 for 3,490 yards and a 34/12 TD/INT rate. For that, he was named the 2017 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year. Unfortunately, we likely won't see him again this year. Grier broke the middle finger of his throwing hand in gruesome fashion against Texas almost a month ago. He's unlikely to be active for the Mountaineers’ bowl game.

Oregon HC Mario Cristobal announced that senior RB Royce Freeman will sit out Saturday’s Las Vegas Bowl matchup against Boise State.

The tea leaves had been pointing this way over the past few days. "Am I disappointed in him? No. Do I want to see him play? Absolutely. But I stand by him," Cristobal said. The announcement ends Freeman's prolific collegiate career. He leaves as Oregon's leading all-time rusher with 5,621 yards, which ranks second all-time in Pac-12 history (Charles White) and sixth in FBS history. Freeman's 60 rushing touchdowns are a Pac-12 record. The 5-foot-11, 231-pounder is a versatile, bell-cow big back with receiving chops, slick footwork, plus-vision and great balance. He comes from a wide-open system that left fewer opposing defenders in the box. And since he's unlikely to test in the upper-echelon of RB athletes, evaluators could question whether he can be as effective at the next level, where he won't see the thinned-out boxes he did in college. That narrative may lead to Freeman being available at a discount. He's drawn Day 2 (Rds. 2-3) grades.

Cleveland County District Attorney Greg Mashburn announced that his office would not pursue charges against Oklahoma redshirt sophomore Rodney Anderson.

Earlier in December, a woman filed for an order of protection against Anderson, with details coming out later that the woman was a "victim of rape" and calling Anderson an "accused rapist." It was reported last week that he passed a three-hour polygraph test administered by a former FBI investigator. Barring a surprise, he should be on the field when the Sooners take on Georgia in the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day.

Pittsburgh sophomore QB Ben DiNucci is transferring from Pittsburgh.

DiNucci made the announcement in a tweet, thanking head coach Pat Narduzzi and the staff before announcing that he'd leave in January. The sophomore quarterback played in 10 games for the Panthers in 2017, completing 55 percent of his passes while throwing for 1,098 yards with five touchdowns and five interceptions. It's the second quarterback to transfer from the school this week, as former four-star commit Thomas MacVittie also announced he'll leave the program.

UCF redshirt senior LT Aaron Evans will miss the school's bowl game due to an injury.

Evans apparently played through an undisclosed injury all season, but it will keep him out of the final game. That leads us to wonder if Evans is looking towards his NFL future, which no one should have an issue with. Evans played at an extremely high level all season long, but UCF now has a stiff test against Auburn.
Dec 14 - 10:13 AM

Auburn HC Gus Malzahn doesn't yet know if junior RB Kerryon Johnson (ribs, shoulder) will be able to play in the Peach Bowl against UCF on Jan. 1.

"I know he'll want to play (in the Peach Bowl)," Malzahn said Wednesday. "He's a great competitor. All of our guys will want to play. Our guys play for each other. So we'll see where that goes. I'll have a better idea once we get out to practice and move around and everything that goes with that." The coach added that Johnson didn't need surgery to correct the medical issues. Johnson suffered a shoulder injury in the Iron Bowl last month against Alabama. He tried to play through it against Georgia in the SEC title game, but proved ineffective (44 yards on 13 carries).

UNC redshirt freshman QB Logan Byrd will transfer.

We assume the Tar Heels' coaching staff didn't take to the former four-star recruit, because all signs Byrd must have gotten this fall pointed towards his eventual exit. UNC started three different quarterbacks during its lost 2017 season; Brandon Harris, Nathan Elliott and Chazz Surratt. Somehow, Byrd was not given his audition, never seeing even one snap. The 6-foot-3, 230-pounder was one of the top pro-style QBs in the country coming out of high school. Meanwhile, Elliott and Surratt will compete for UNC's starting QB job next year.
Dec 13 - 6:02 PM

Oregon HC Mario Cristobal declined to speculate on whether senior RB Royce Freeman would play against Boise State in the Las Vegas Bowl on Saturday.

"No update yet," Cristobal said. Freeman is apparently mulling the possibility of skipping the game to begin preparing for the NFL Draft. This could go either way: While the rumors and Cristobal's evasive statements would seem to indicate that there's a decent chance Freeman will sit, the star running back did practice with the Ducks on Tuesday. Boise State HC Bryan Harsin said he's preparing as though he'll face Freeman, but Harsin did ask media members if they thought Freeman would play, an indication of just how serious this possibility is. Freeman ranks No. 9 in the FBS with 1,475 rushing yards this year. He's also scored 16 touchdowns. Tony Brooks-James and Kani Benoit -- who are both healthy, per Cristobal -- would get the bulk of RB touches on Saturday if Freeman is out.
Dec 13 - 5:53 PM

Boise State HC Bryan Harsin is optimistic that sophomore RB Alexander Mattison (leg) will be able to play in Saturday’s Las Vegas Bowl against Oregon.

"Alexander is improving, he’ll get some stuff done this week," Harsin said. "How it feels as he goes into the game will kind of determine it at that point. Knowing Alexander, he usually gets himself back and ready to go, but we won’t know until game time." B.J. Rains of the Idaho Press-Tribune gave credence to that quote by adding that he'd been told by a source that Mattison has a "real chance to play Saturday and that Harsin wasn't just giving 'coach speak' as coaches often do before big games." Mattison leads the Broncos with 1,074 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns. Ryan Wolpin will start if he can't.
Dec 13 - 3:54 PM

Oregon redshirt junior DE Jalen Jelks said he will return for his senior season.

Jelks will not enter his name into the 2018 NFL Draft. "I'm back for sure," he said, later adding this: "I missed a lot of plays, and if I can capitalize on that and translate it to next season I could contribute a lot to the draft." The 6-foot-5, 245-pound end broke out with 50 tackles, 6.5 sacks and 15 TFL this fall. An NFL scout told The Oregonian that he had projected Jelks as a potential Day 2 pick in this spring's draft.
Dec 13 - 3:45 PM

Baylor sophomore QB Zach Smith will transfer.

The former four-star recruit ended up starting 10 games over two seasons for Baylor, but he repeatedly squandered opportunities to run away with the job despite injuries to 2016-2017 starters Seth Russell and Anu Solomon. True freshman dual-threat Charlie Brewer turned out to be a better fit for Matt Rhule's new offense than Smith, a traditional pro-style pocket passer. Thus, Smith will look for a better opportunity. He'll sit out next season if he transfers within the FBS per NCAA rules, and then he'll have two years of eligibility left beginning in 2019.
