ESPN's Bill Williamson could see the 49ers "using a premium pick" on a pass rusher in lieu of Aldon Smith's arrest.

Even with Smith's future in doubt, Williamson still believes San Francisco's top draft needs are cornerback and receiver. However, the 49ers own an NFL-best six picks in the top 100, and it appears likely that at least one of those picks will be invested in an edge rusher. ESPN draft analyst Steve Muench mentioned Boise State's Demarcus Lawrence and BYU's Kyle Van Noy as good fits in the second or third round, and pointed to Texas’ Jackson Jeffcoat, Alabama DE/OLB Adrian Hubbard and Stanford’s Trent Murphy as Rds. 3-4 options. "[Lawrence] will likely be gone and they may not want to take a player who has been suspended three times over the past two seasons but he has the length, quickness and flexibility to develop into an effective edge rusher in the NFL," said Muench. CBS Sports' Dane Brugler interestingly also fingered Lawrence when discussing the same Smith-centric topic on Twitter. Brugler added Auburn edge rusher Dee Ford as a fit for the 49ers.

Penn State junior RB Saquon Barkley exploded for 211 yards rushing and a touchdown on 28 carries while catching 12 passes for 94 yards in Saturday's 21-19 win over Iowa.

This was as complete a game as you will see from a player this season. Barkley showed off his entire repertoire of skills in the enthralling victory, busting through tackles, stopping on a dime, sprinting through the second level, leaping over opposing defenders and on and on and on. He looked every bit like a future NFL star. In just four games this season, the junior superstar has rushed for 518 yards and four touchdowns. He also owns a 23-335-2 receiving line. Indiana will be the next team to try to hold him in check, if that's even possible the way he's going right now.

Baylor sophomore WR Denzel Mims caught 11 passes for 192 yards and three scores in a 49-41 loss to Oklahoma on Saturday.

Mims (6'4/180) has electric speed, and the Oklahoma secondary had no answers for the talented sophomore. His first score was a 19-yard bullet from QB Zach Smith that put Baylor on the scoreboard and made it 14-7 Sooners. Then with the Bears trailing 28-10, Smith found the wideout on a fly pattern, and he was able to jog into the end zone after breaking a tackle to make it 28-17. Touchdown No.3 was the most controversial, as he may or may not have gotten a foot down in the back of the end zone to make it 49-41. The Bears aren't going to win many games this year, but that has nothing to do with Sims. He has the potential to go early in either the 2018 or 2019 draft.
Sep 23 - 10:49 PM

Oklahoma redshirt senior QB Baker Mayfield completed 13-of-19 passes for 293 yards and three scores in a 49-41 victory over Baylor on Saturday.

He also ran for 30 yards. Mayfield didn't have to throw much with the Sooners able to run the football for 342 yards, but he still made more than his fair share of big plays in the win. He opened the scoring early with a 24-yard strike to Mark Andrews to make it 7-0 Sooners with 14:08 left in the first quarter. He also found Demetrius Flowers for a 52-yard score in the first, and his final touchdown pass was was a 48-yard dart to Jeff Badet to give the Sooners a 35-31 lead. Oklahoma's defense didn't look great tonight, but Mayfield was once again efficient and able to make plays with his impressive right arm.
Sep 23 - 10:43 PM

FAU sophomore RB Devin Singletary rushed for 156 yards and three touchdowns in Saturday's 34-31 loss to Buffalo.

Singletary ripped off a 34-yard scoring run early in the second quarter and later came through with a pair of short touchdowns in the fourth quarter. His final score drew the Owls to within the 34-31 with just over a minute remaining in the game, but they were unable to come through with a miracle finish. After being held under 70 yards rushing in the first two games of the season, Singletary has gone over 100 yards in each of the last two contests. He will try to make it three-in-a-row when FAU tangos with Middle Tennessee next weekend.
Sep 23 - 10:38 PM

Georgia senior RB Nick Chubb ran for 81 yards and two scores on 15 carries in a 31-3 victory over Mississippi State on Saturday.

Chubb (5'10/235) did what he did best; punish defender between the tackles and make people miss in the open field. His first touchdown was a perfect example of that when he shook off an ankle tackle and gave UGA a `14-0 lead. His second touchdown was a 28 yard blast to make it 21-3 Georgia and put the game out of reach from the ineffective Mississippi State offense. The bulldogs are limiting Chubbs touches, but he's still showing that he can make the most of them.
Sep 23 - 10:20 PM

Washington State senior QB Luke Falk completed 37-of-48 passes for 478 yards and five touchdowns in a 45-7 thrashing of Nevada on Saturday.

It was way too easy for Falk, and the 6-foot-4, 223-pound quarterback picked the Wolf Pack defense apart. In Washington State HC Mike Leach's offense the quarterback is very much like a point guard, and Falk distributed the ball evenly and beautifully. He found four different Cougars for scores, with Tavares Martin receiving two of the five touchdowns. Even with his struggles against Boise State he's put up terrific numbers to start 2017, and he'll be on the national radar on Friday when Wazzu hosts USC.
Sep 23 - 9:03 PM

Miami junior RB Mark Walton (ankle) rushed for 204 yards and a touchdown on just 11 carries in Saturday's 52-30 win over Toledo.

An odd -- if spectacular -- game for Walton, who sat out a chunk of it after rolling his ankle in the first half. No matter, as he would return in the second half to continue his personal demolition of the Rockets. Walton averaged a meaty 18.54 YPC in the win and ripped off a 44-yard touchdown run to open the game's scoring a few minutes into the first quarter. Miami has played just two games this season, but Walton is already up to 352 yards rushing on the year. He'll try to keep it going against Duke next Friday.
Sep 23 - 8:14 PM

Oklahoma State senior WR James Washington caught six passes for 153 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's 44-31 loss to TCU.

Washington put in his typical statistical brilliance in this one, but the Cowboys were saddled with their first loss of the season nonetheless. His touchdown was yet another of the long, long variety, as he scored from 86 yards out in the closing minutes of the first quarter. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound senior has played like a Heisman contender this season, having now caught 19 passes for 520 yards and four touchdowns in four games. Next weekend's showdown with Texas Tech could see all of the points in the universe.
Sep 23 - 7:53 PM

Michigan redshirt senior QB John O'Korn completed 18-of-26 passes for 270 yards and a touchdown with an interception in a 28-10 victory over Purdue on Saturday.

O'Korn (6'4/220) came in early after quarter Wilton Speight left (undisclosed), and for the most part, he was effective. He shows more accuracy than Speight has this year, and outside of one bad interception, he took care of the ball. His touchdown pass was 12-yard strike to Brycen Hopkins to give the Wolverines a 7-0 lead. It's unclear if Speight will have to miss any time, but considering how O'Korn played against the Boilermakers, he might have earned a chance for a start against Michigan State after their bye next week.
Sep 23 - 7:48 PM

Clemson freshman RB Travis Etienne rushed for 113 yards and two touchdowns on only nine carries in Saturday's 34-7 victory over Boston College.

The Tigers entered the fourth quarter tied 7-7 with the Eagles, but they pounced from there, scoring 27 points in the last stanza. Etienne had two of the four fourth-quarter touchdowns, including a 50-yard scoring scamper. He and sophomore RB Tavien Feaster have completely usurped the veteran C.J. Fuller (one carry today). While Feaster had only 73 yards on his 20 carries, Etienne continued to prove that he's the Tigers' most explosive back. The true freshman has averaged over 10.0 YPC in each of the three games he's played in. On the year, in only 23 carries, he's rushed for 292 yards and four touchdowns. That's 12.69 YPC, folks. Expect more carries going forward.
Sep 23 - 7:22 PM

TCU sophomore RB Darius Anderson rushed for 160 yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries in Saturday's 44-31 upset of Oklahoma State.

Anderson (5'11/205) had the starting gig to himself in this one, as Kyle Hicks sat due to an undisclosed injury concern. He more than carried the weight of the expanded workload, averaging 6.15 YPC in the victory. He scored in each of the final three quarters of the game, with his breakaway 42-yard touchdown with 2:45 remaining essentially putting the contest to rest after Oklahoma State had drawn to within six points. Anderson has posted a stellar 422 yards rushing and six touchdowns in four games. The 4-0 Horned Frogs will be off on bye next weekend, with a home showdown against West Virginia set for the following Saturday.
