Texas A&M WR Mike Evans compared his playing style to Brandon Marshall's.

"I get a lot of Vincent Jackson comparisons, and that's a great comparison," Evans said. "But I think Brandon Marshall. He's vicious after the catch. A big, physical guy, can go up and get it, blocks real well. So I've modeled my game after him since high school." Evans (6-foot-5, 231 pounds) is bigger than the 6-foot-4, 230-pound Marshall. NFL Media analysts Daniel Jeremiah and Bucky Brooks both project Evans to the Buccaneers with the No. 7 overall pick in their mock drafts.

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said the team is open to any position in the first round except for quarterback.

"We’ll go for the best player," Lewis said. "And we’ll get a really good player and hopefully the guy will have a strong, healthy career." Overall, it is not a surprise that the Bengals will bypass quarterback in the first round, but the mindset of being complacent at the position is interesting. Andy Dalton is not among the top players at his spot, and his contract is very team friendly. If the Bengals wanted to pursue a better option, although that is easier said then done, Dalton's contract is easy to move on from. But the Bengals remain certain Dalton is their guy.

The MMQB's Peter King suggests UConn DB Obi Melifonwu could run in the low 4.4s at the NFL Combine.

This would open up a transition to corner. Tall safeties who have length and can run will always be viewed by some teams as corners, since the latter is considered a premium position and the contracts back it up. Plus, those types are difficult to find. Look at Damarious Randall, plus many teams viewed T.J. Green as a corner last year. "I know NFL guys who think, ‘I’d love to try him [at corner]. Let’s see if he fails,’" Mike Mayock told Peter King. Melifonwu stands at 6-foot-4 and 219-pounds.

NFL Network's Mike Mayock believes Wisconsin edge rusher T.J. Watt has a similar game to Clay Matthews.

Mayock calls the comparison "easy" since Watt is an "edge who can drop in coverage and has a motor that just won’t stop." We would point to Clay Matthews' outstanding athleticism as a major tool in why he is successful in the NFL, including a 10 yard split of 1.49 seconds and above-average scores in every other test, especially 3-cone and the short shuttle. Will Watt match those testing numbers? We know his brother put on a show in Indianapolis.

One AFC college scouting director believes LSU WR Malachi Dupre and Tennessee WR Josh Malone can grow into No. 2 receivers on an NFL team.

What skills matter to this personnel director? The duo "play big in the red zone and they bring some big-play ability as vertical threats," he told Bucky Brooks of NFL.com. Malone played with the better quarterback in Josh Dobbs, however, Dobbs lacked consistency for years. LSU's passing game was virtually non-existent. Perhaps the two exit the NFL Combine as risers.

NFL.com's Buck Brooks believes Tennessee edge rusher Derek Barnett possesses "nearly identical skills" to Charges edge rusher Joey Bosa.

Brooks claims the two share a "blue-collar game built on grit, hustle, and technique." We think Bosa has far more bend and overall athleticism than Barnett, but the foundation of the Vols' pass rusher's game is laid out there. Brooks suggests Barnett should be in the mix with Myles Garrett as the top pass rusher on the board. That is extremely high praise, and Barnett's consistent production since his first season can be used to back that up.

Despite Ole Miss' self-imposed bowl ban due to NCAA rules violations, sophomore QB Shea Patterson does not plan on transferring.

It hasn't been the best week for the Rebels, as the NCAA hit them with eight additional violations on top of the 13 that were already being levied against them. The program self-imposed a bowl ban for 2017. However, Patterson's decision not jump from the currently burning, sinking ship is at least one cause for a sigh of relief in Oxford. "I love my school, coaches, teammates and our fans and I can't wait for the 2017 season together! Let's go!" wrote the 6-foot-2, 193-pounder on Twitter. Patterson, a five-star recruit in the 2016 cycle, started three games last season. He threw for at least 300 yards in two of them and posted a 6/3 TD/INT ratio in that space. If Ole Miss is to have any chance of extricating themselves from this mess in the near future, Patterson figures to be a key piece of the puzzle.

Miami received a verbal commitment from four-star 2018 QB Artur Sitkowski.

LSU, Wisconsin, Temple and Florida State were also among those eyeing Sitkowski before he opted to join HC Mark Richt at Miami. The 6-foot-4, 208-pounder currently plies his trade with the high school football factory that is IMG Academy down in Florida. Brian Dohn of Scout.com loves his deep ball and his feel for the pocket. Scout ranks him as their No. 75 overall prospect in the 2018 cycle. Rivals is even higher on the gunslinger, slotting him into their master list at No. 61 overall. The Canes are in the young process of building a monster class right now.

Arizona hired Central Michigan AD Dave Heeke to serve in the same capacity.

Heeke fills the void left behind when Greg Byrne flew the coop to become Alabama's athletic director earlier this offseason. He had been with Central Michigan since 2006. Prior to that stint with the Chippewas, he spent 18 years in various capacities at Oregon. In a statement, Heeke said, "This program is about excellence and we will continue to focus on achieving at the very highest level athletically and academically, while creating the finest experience in the country for our student-athletes."

Florida State four-star 2018 verbal ATH commit Justin Watkins flipped to Texas.

Watkins is Texas' first commitment of the 2018 cycle. He flipped from his FSU pledge following his visit to Austin for junior day on Saturday. The 6-foot, 160-pounder ranks as Rivals' No. 74 overall prospect. Over at Scout.com, the analysis team notes that he possesses "the capabilities to take it to the house each time he touches the ball, and flashes outstanding vision and cutback ability when navigating in the open field as well." Just what position Watkins will play with the Longhorns is not yet known. He could potentially suit up at corner, wideout or running back. On top of all of that, the dynamic athlete excels in the return game, too.

The Tulsa World's Bill Heistan reports that former Notre Dame DC Brian VanGorder has been hired by Oklahoma State to serve in the role of defensive analyst.

Notre Dame has gone through a massive staff overhaul under HC Brian Kelly since the start of the 2016 season. While many of those coaching moves were made in the offseason, VanGorder wasn't so lucky. After the Irish limped out to a 1-3 start in which they coughed up 134 total points, VanGorder was canned. He finished out the campaign as a defensive analyst at Georgia. The fall from Notre Dame defensive coordinator to Oklahoma State defensive analyst is a pretty massive one, but Stillwater could serve as a nice landing spot in which VanGorder can recuperate from his traumatically truncated 2016.

USC four-star 2018 verbal WR commit Manuel Allen has reopened his recruitment.

Manuel announced his decommitment via a very, very short statement on Twitter. He had initially opted in with HC Clay Helton and the Trojans at the beginning of January. The 6-foot-1, 170-pounder ranks as Rivals No. 139 overall prospect in the 2018 cycle. ESPN's Gerry Hamilton viewed this as a near-lock for the Trojans, but every now and then the key slips from the hand.
