Louisville senior edge rusher Lorenzo Mauldin said a big reason he wanted to shift to linebacker next season was that "it helps me with the NFL scouts."

Louisville is transitioning to a 3-4 defensive alignment under new defensive coordinator Todd Grantham. "He's talked to me about what I need to do, what I need to learn, what the scouts are looking for," Mauldin said, while mentioning he will be playing "the Jarvis Jones position." Mauldin will provide a perfect attacking presence from the outside, an ability Mauldin himself calls an "all-natural gift." Interestingly, both Mauldin and Marcus Smith, who combined for 24 sacks and 30.5 tackles for loss as one of the nation's best DE duos last year, will play OLB in 2014; Smith was drafted in Round 1 by the Eagles in May. "All of us have aspirations about playing in the league ... and making big money," Mauldin said.

Oklahoma State OC Mike Yurcich removed his name from consideration for Auburn’s OC job.

Auburn will look elsewhere for Rhett Lashlee's heir. Yurcich, a 2016 Broyles Award nominee (nation's top assistant coach), presided over the No. 14 offense in the country this past season. With QB Mason Rudolph and WR James Washington heading back to Stillwater, the Pokes will be even more explosive in 2017.

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney says NFL scouts who give QB Deshaun Watson a second-round grade should be fired.

"They should lose their jobs," Swinney said when asked about reports that Watson is receiving Rd. 2 grades. "That is absolutely the craziest thing. They don't know Deshaun. ... I can't even tell you how brilliant he is as a football player, as a person, how impactful of a man he is. He's going to change a locker room the day he gets there. He's just so driven, so humble. (He has an) unbelievable understanding of his platform and his skill set is off the charts. He can do anything and everything." Rotoworld's Thor Nystrom believes Watson is a surefire first-round talent, but those disagreeing say Watson isn't accurate enough and may struggle inside the pocket. In his first Big Board, NFL.com analyst Daniel Jeremiah listed Watson as the No. 32 prospect. Get ready for a Teddy Bridgewater-like process for Mr. Watson.

Washington junior QB Jake Browning is expected to be shelved for six weeks after recently undergoing right shoulder surgery.

Per the Seattle Times, the injury occurred against Arizona State on Nov. 19. Browning played through it, and Huskies coaches kept the news a secret as they prepared for the College Football Playoff. The throwing-shoulder injury gives some context to Browning's late-season struggles (along with playing a brutal slate down the stretch. Browning had a 202.79 quarterback rating through nine games, better than Russell Wilson’s 2011 NCAA single-season record. His QB rating dropped to 161.82 over the final five games. Browning was sixth in the Heisman Trophy voting after throwing for 3,430 yards and 43 scores.

Rutgers senior WR Janarion Grant was granted a medical redshirt from the Big 10 and will return to school next season.

Outstanding news for the Scarlet Knights, who unexpectedly get their best playmaker back for another season after he broke his ankle in the fourth game of his true senior season. Rutgers was toothless on offense from the second Grant's ankle gave out. The Scarlet Knights finished No. 128 of 128 FBS teams in yards from scrimmage and No. 127 in scoring (15.7 ppg). ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. says a healthy Grant may have been a late Day 3 pick because of his special teams ability. The 5-foot-10, 180-pounder has 2,606 all-purpose yards and eight return touchdowns in his career.

Miami graduate RB Gus Edwards will transfer.

This is an unfortunate development for the Hurricanes, who also recently lost second-leading rusher Joe Yearby to early declaration. Edwards was third on the team in rushing in 2016, logging 290 yards on 59 carries (4.9 yards per carry). Miami will need to develop depth behind starter Mark Walton posthaste. As for Edwards, he's eligible to play for another FBS school in 2017 as a graduate. The 6-foot-2, 225 pound tailback from Staten Island once committed to Syracuse and may be interested in doing so again.

Oklahoma sophomore CB Parrish Cobb was arrested for three counts of aggravated robbery.

He's currently being held. Police suspect Cobb of robbing a pedestrian of his wallet while armed on Jan. 10. Baylor police and nearby Bellmead authorities also want to talk to Cobb about armed robberies they're investigating. Oklahoma suspended Cobb, who started two games and made four appearances as a true freshman in 2016.

Clemson QB Deshaun Watson declined an invitation to attend the Senior Bowl.

Of the two outcomes, this one was most likely. Watson graduated in December, so he was eligible for the event and would have been coached by the Cleveland Browns who own the No. 1 pick. Watson cited the long season as to why he declined the opportunity, which is very valid. Other passers have declined in the past, including Marcus Mariota. Watson is locked into a three-way competition for the first quarterback off the board with Mitch Trubisky and DeShone Kizer. None will be in Mobile, AL. Matt Miller of Bleacher Report first reported the news.

Draft Analyst's Tony Pauline passes along that "after surveying league people during the first day of Shrine [Game] practice, the overwhelming belief is [Clemson QB Deshaun] Watson will receive second-round grades in war rooms."

"He’ll grade well in the areas of character and leadership," Pauline writes, "but his accuracy down the field and out to the flanks has been a constant worry. Teams here also question whether or not Watson can play from the pocket." The analyst doesn't think the first round is out of the question for the 6-foot-2, 205-pounder, but believes that would likely only come if a team in need of a quarterback were to trade up from the second round to grab Watson in the final 10 picks of Round 1 (much like the Vikings did with Teddy Bridgewater).

Lauren Rew of FM 107.7 The Franchise in Oklahoma City reports that Auburn has interviewed Oklahoma State OC Mike Yurcich for their open position.

Yurcich -- or whomever Auburn ends up hiring -- will take over for Tigers OC Rhett Lashlee, who jumped ship for UConn earlier this offseason. Yurcich was a 2016 nominee for the Broyles Award (handed out annually to the nation's top assistant coach) and helped forge an offense which ranked 14th in the country in total offense this past season. He has been with the Cowboys since 2013. One name that has already reportedly been nixed from the running at Auburn -- that of former Baylor HC Art Briles.

Multiple outlets are reporting that Western Michigan has hired Indiana coordinator Kevin Johns to serve as offensive coordinator.

Football Scoop was first on this one. Johns has been a versatile piece of Indiana coaching staff over the past six seasons and has worked as a coordinator, a quarterbacks coach and a wide receivers coach. Prior to that stint with the Hoosiers, he had spent seven years on the Northwestern sideline. Western Michigan has yet to name a defensive coordinator, but that figures to happen in relatively short order.

Former Virginia Tech HC Frank Beamer has been added to the College Football Playoff selection committee.

The selection committee has filled all three of their vacant seats. In addition to Beamer, Ohio State AD Gene Smith and Robert Morris President Chris Howard will also be helping to sort out the Playoff over the next three years. "To join a group with so many great minds and such a diverse range of experience, I just want to pull my weight," Beamer said. "The committee has an important role, and I’ll do everything asked of me to help rank the best teams in America for the right to compete for the national championship."
