USC head coach Steve Sarkisian said the school received calls on Tuesday contradicting senior DB Josh Shaw's story about saving his nephew from drowning.

"I heard late last night doubts within the program over Josh Shaw story," beat writer Scott Wolf tweeted. "Sources told me incident did not involve family party or rescuing nephew from pool. USC investigating claims." The initial story stated Shaw jumped from the second story to save his nephew, who could not swim. Saw suffered two high ankle sprains from the event, which was reported via a school release. Stay tuned for more.

Baylor HC Jim Grobe says senior CB Travon Blanchard may miss multiple games with a meniscus injury.

Already thin as is, the Bears' defense could ill-afford to lose its starting nickel back. Fortunately, the early-season slate is filled with cream puffs, so the coaches presumably want Blanchard to regroup for Big 12 play. "Travon Blanchard might have a meniscus," Grobe said. "Not something that has me alarmed right now." Blanchard will have his knee examined. Grobe doesn't expect that evaluation to reveal a significant injury.

South Carolina reported 23 violations of NCAA or SEC rules in the past year.

Of those infractions, nine involved the football team, six of them occurring since Will Muschamp was named head coach. Only one of the infractions was classified higher than a minor Level III. Some of them were pretty ticky-tack, like former HC Steve Spurrier telling the media that the daughter of a former NFL player was visiting campus or a quality control coordinator using a headset while in the press box to talk with the coaches on the field. If the NCAA penalizes the Gamecocks, it shouldn't be much more than a slap on the wrist.

Ohio senior QB J.D. Sprague has left the program.

It appears Sprague will be hanging up the cleats for good barring a change of heart. This spring, the 6-foot-1, 200-pounder underwent surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome. The disorder often results in a numbing of the fingers, as blood flow from the neck to the armpit area is constricted by nerves in the upper-chest. While the procedure was successful, Sprague just hasn't been able to return to football-shape. "He is concerned about his health right now," said HC Frank Solich of his decision. "He’s lost a lot of weight, he’s been unable to get his strength up to where he wants it. All of that has had an affect on him." The quarterback finishes his Bobcats career having thrown for 2,219 yards (51.5% completions) with a 10/8 TD/INT ratio. With Sprague out of the picture, the starting job for 2016 will go to either redshirt senior Greg Windham or redshirt freshman Quinton Maxwell.

Indefinitely suspended Notre Dame senior CB Devin Butler has been formally charged with resisting law enforcement and battery of a police officer.

These were the expected charges following Butler's altercation with law enforcement outside of the Linebacker Lounge over the weekend. They arrived on the scene after a report of a patron fighting with security. According to the probable cause affidavit, the 6-foot, 195-pounder pushed a police officer and tackled him to the ground before a taser was used to settle the wideout. Both charges being levied against him are Level 6 felonies carrying up to 2 1/2 years in prison. Notre Dame has a policy to dismiss students arrested on felony charges, but for the time being, Butler remains indefinitely suspended with the team.

Wisconsin redshirt senior C Dan Voltz retired from football due to injury concerns.

Voltz tore the ACL and lateral meniscus in his right knee last October. The 6-foot-3, 311-pounder was a three-year starter at center, but hoped to shift over to left guard following that debilitating injury. He indicated that his retirement was due to multiple factors and not just that blow to his knee. "This program’s been a big part of my life for going on five years now," said Voltz. "It’s something I deeply care about." In Voltz's place, Micah Kapoi and Jon Dietzen both figure to see opportunities at left guard this coming season, with Kapoi the probable favorite to start.

Uncommitted five-star 2017 T Isaiah Wilson has locked in official visits to Florida State, Michigan and Alabama.

Wilson will make an official to Florida State when they host Boston College (November 11), Michigan when they host Indiana (November 18) and Alabama when they host Auburn (November 25). In addition to that trio, the 6-foot-6, 325-pounder will also take official trips to Georgia and USC. He has yet to lock in the dates for those visits, though. His list of officials sheds light on one of the summer mysteries of the recruiting cycle. In late June, Wilson called Alabama, LSU, Georgia, Michigan and USC his top five, but hinted that one of those programs was in danger of losing an official visit. That, it would turn out, was LSU. Wilson ranks as Rivals' No. 6 overall prospect for 2017.

BYU redshirt senior QB Taysom Hill was named the starter for 2016.

Hill won out over Tanner Mangum. Now all that is left is to cross your digits and hope the 6-foot-2, 232-pounder can stay healthy. Hill, 26, has been waylaid by major injury throughout his career with the Cougars. Last season, he managed just one half against Nebraska before being knocked out by a season-ending Lisfranc foot injury. During his last healthy season back in 2013, the dynamic gunslinger threw for 2,938 yards (53.9% completions) with a 19/14 TD/INT ratio while rushing for 1,344 yards and 10 touchdowns. We would love to see one more healthy roll from Hill, but if he should go down again, BYU at least has the luxury of an established backup in Mangum.

Mississippi State WR Billy Gonzales said that senior WR Fred Ross (groin) has been cleared medically.

Ross underwent groin surgery this spring and while he is expected to be ready for the season-opener against South Alabama, Mississippi State isn't tossing the 6-foot-2, 207-pounder into the practice deep end. Said Gonzales, "He wants to go, go, go, go, regardless of the situation. He’s cleared to do everything. At the same time, my responsibility is to make sure he’s ready to go, but make sure we’re not wearing him out." Ross set a school record with 88 receptions last season. Those catches went for 1,007 yards and five touchdowns.

Alabama head coach Nick Saban predicted more freshmen will play for the Crimson Tide in 2016 "than we've had for a while around here."

We wonder if one could be freshman quarterback Jalen Hurts, who has drawn the attention of Alabama fans this offseason for his mobility and possible big play ability. Beat writer Rainer Sabin notes "Right tackle Jonah Williams, running back B.J. Emmons and defensive tackle Raekwon Davis" as first year players who could contribute this season. Saban has not started a true freshman at quarterback during his time at Alabama.

Cincinnati named sophomore QB Hayden Moore the starter over redshirt senior Gunner Kiel.

Redshirt freshman Ross Trail was also a part of the competition. Many have been shocked by this news since the announcement, but looking back at blurbs from late July shows Moore leading the depth chart, with Moore at No. 3. Moore produced an outstanding game against Memphis last season, passing for over 550 yards and four touchdowns, but the rest of his starts were less than adequate. The Bearcats kick off the season with a cupcake in UT Martin.

Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson announced junior QB John Wolford as starter.

"John Wolford is going to be our starter, and Kendall (Hinton) is going to play too," Clawson said. The coach went on to say the following: "I just think they both deserve to play. Hopefully we can keep them both healthy by doing this. We're making a decision probably because we had to make a decision and let those guys know. We told both of them that they're both going to play." Wolford is No. 13 in school history with 3,828 career passing yards.
