Oklahoma senior QB Baker Mayfield won the Davey O'Brien Award on Thursday.

The award goes to the best quarterback in college football. Mayfield beat out Ohio State's J.T. Barrett, and Oklahoma State's Mason Rudolph. This will likely not be the last award Mayfield wins on Thursday -- he's got a good shot at the Maxwell -- and there's a strong chance that he takes home another big award on Saturday by the name of Heisman. The senior signal-caller has thrown for 4,340 yards with a 45/5 TD/INT ratio this season and will be seen next in the Rose Bowl when they take on Georgia in a Playoff semifinal on New Year's Eve for the right to advance to the National Championship Game.

South Carolina HC Will Muschamp announced that sophomore RB Rico Dowdle (leg) will play against Michigan in the Outback Bowl.

Dowdle has been out since fracturing his fibula in October. Prior to the injury, had had rushes for 206 yards on 60 carries for the Gamecocks. South Carolina has struggled to run the football all season, but Dowdle, A.J. Turner and Ty'Son Williams give USC at least a chance to pound the rock against the tough Wolverine run defense.

Ole Miss announced Friday that they will file an appeal on the bowl pan they received from the NCAA Infractions Committee.

The school had a self-imposed bowl ban for 2017, and will now appeal for the chance to play in a bowl -- assuming the Rebels qualify -- in 2018. The postseason ban comes after the Infractions Committee found that Mississippi committed 21 rules violations. The school also received a loss of scholarships, and former coach Hugh Freeze will have to serve a two-game conference ban if he returns to coaching.

FOX Sports' Bruce Feldman reports that a "deal is imminent" between Louisiana and Arizona State OC Billy Napier.

This is a nice hire for the Ragin’ Cajuns, who will attempt to rebuild courtesy of an offensive revolution. Napier will bring an up-tempo spread system that prioritizes speed and getting athletes into space. The 38-year-old is a former Alabama and Clemson assistant who did strong work calling the shots for the Sun Devils' offense. Per Feldman, Napier is "really connected in the South."

Texas Tech signed DC David Gibbs to a contract extension.

After it was announced that Phil Bennett wouldn't return as Arizona State's DC, Gibbs became a rumored target of Herm Edwards' for the job. Instead, Gibbs has renewed his vows with the Red Raiders to the tune of a pay bump from $550,000 per year to $650,000. Tech's defense took a big step forward in 2017, leading the Big 12 with 27 takeaways.

West Virginia senior RB Justin Crawford will skip the Zaxby's Heart of Dallas Bowl against Utah on December 26 to begin preparations for the NFL Draft.

West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen announced the news on Thursday, shortly after Oregon released a similar news dispatch regarding Royce Freeman. Crawford, a JUCO transfer from Northwest Mississippi Community College, finished with back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons and back-to-back all-Big 12 second team appearances in his two years with the Mountaineers. The 6-foot, 200-pounder has skills, but he may get lost in the shuffle amidst this stacked running back class. USA Today's Luke Easterling did not rank Crawford among his top-22 RBs in a recent position ranking. Crawford figures to get taken sometime on Day 3.
Dec 15 - 10:22 AM

West Virginia redshirt junior QB Will Grier announced that he'll return for his senior season in 2018.

This is the right decision, as Grier would have likely been a Day 3 afterthought had he declared. Grier (6'2/215) could improve his draft stock with a big senior season. And while he won't magically be bigger this time next year, he could cut down on some mistakes and dispel lingering decision-making concerns. He was outstanding in his first year as the Mountaineers quarterback, going 250-of-388 for 3,490 yards and a 34/12 TD/INT rate. For that, he was named the 2017 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year. Unfortunately, we likely won't see him again this year. Grier broke the middle finger of his throwing hand in gruesome fashion against Texas almost a month ago. He's unlikely to be active for the Mountaineers’ bowl game.
Dec 14 - 6:57 PM

Oregon HC Mario Cristobal announced that senior RB Royce Freeman will sit out Saturday’s Las Vegas Bowl matchup against Boise State.

The tea leaves had been pointing this way over the past few days. "Am I disappointed in him? No. Do I want to see him play? Absolutely. But I stand by him," Cristobal said. The announcement ends Freeman's prolific collegiate career. He leaves as Oregon's leading all-time rusher with 5,621 yards, which ranks second all-time in Pac-12 history (Charles White) and sixth in FBS history. Freeman's 60 rushing touchdowns are a Pac-12 record. The 5-foot-11, 231-pounder is a versatile, bell-cow big back with receiving chops, slick footwork, plus-vision and great balance. He comes from a wide-open system that left fewer opposing defenders in the box. And since he's unlikely to test in the upper-echelon of RB athletes, evaluators could question whether he can be as effective at the next level, where he won't see the thinned-out boxes he did in college. That narrative may lead to Freeman being available at a discount. He's drawn Day 2 (Rds. 2-3) grades.
Dec 14 - 6:42 PM

Cleveland County District Attorney Greg Mashburn announced that his office would not pursue charges against Oklahoma redshirt sophomore Rodney Anderson.

Earlier in December, a woman filed for an order of protection against Anderson, with details coming out later that the woman was a "victim of rape" and calling Anderson an "accused rapist." It was reported last week that he passed a three-hour polygraph test administered by a former FBI investigator. Barring a surprise, he should be on the field when the Sooners take on Georgia in the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day.
Dec 14 - 3:39 PM

Pittsburgh sophomore QB Ben DiNucci is transferring from Pittsburgh.

DiNucci made the announcement in a tweet, thanking head coach Pat Narduzzi and the staff before announcing that he'd leave in January. The sophomore quarterback played in 10 games for the Panthers in 2017, completing 55 percent of his passes while throwing for 1,098 yards with five touchdowns and five interceptions. It's the second quarterback to transfer from the school this week, as former four-star commit Thomas MacVittie also announced he'll leave the program.
Dec 14 - 2:16 PM

UCF redshirt senior LT Aaron Evans will miss the school's bowl game due to an injury.

Evans apparently played through an undisclosed injury all season, but it will keep him out of the final game. That leads us to wonder if Evans is looking towards his NFL future, which no one should have an issue with. Evans played at an extremely high level all season long, but UCF now has a stiff test against Auburn.
Dec 14 - 10:13 AM

Auburn HC Gus Malzahn doesn't yet know if junior RB Kerryon Johnson (ribs, shoulder) will be able to play in the Peach Bowl against UCF on Jan. 1.

"I know he'll want to play (in the Peach Bowl)," Malzahn said Wednesday. "He's a great competitor. All of our guys will want to play. Our guys play for each other. So we'll see where that goes. I'll have a better idea once we get out to practice and move around and everything that goes with that." The coach added that Johnson didn't need surgery to correct the medical issues. Johnson suffered a shoulder injury in the Iron Bowl last month against Alabama. He tried to play through it against Georgia in the SEC title game, but proved ineffective (44 yards on 13 carries).
