LSU OC Steve Ensminger said that sophomore QB Myles Brennan will open spring practice taking reps with the first-team offense.

While Ensminger said that Brennan will receive the initial first-team snaps with the team this spring, this is far from an open/shut job for the sophomore. Lowell Narcisse and Justin McMillan should both receive their fair share of reps, too, and the competition may well stretch into August unless somebody jumps up early. For his part, the 6-foot-4, 193-pound Brennan completed 14-of-24 passes for 182 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions in limited opportunities as a true freshman during the 2017 campaign. He was a four-star recruit coming out of high school last winter.

Clemson freshman QB Trevor Lawrence completed 26-of-39 passes for 308 yards and one touchdown in Saturday's 41-7 win over No. 16 NC State.

Today was Lawrence's (6'6/215) first career game with over 300 passing yards, and we have a feeling there are more to come. NC State put a ton of resources into stopping stud running back Travis Etienne, which did hold him to just 2.6 yards per carry, but it allowed Lawrence to have his best passing game of his young career. Clemson's offense is looking better and better each week with Lawrence getting more reps under his belt, so Florida State will have their hands full trying to stop undefeated Clemson next Saturday morning.

Alabama sophomore QB Tua Tagovailoa completed 19-of-29 passes for 306 yards and four touchdowns in Saturday's 58-21 win over Tennessee.

What do you say at this point? Tua has now led Alabama to opening-drive touchdowns in all eight games this year. He was doing Tua things all afternoon. Effortlessly avoiding pressure, dropping dimes to all levels of the field and in general looking like the special player he is. Per ESPN, Tagovailoa now has three games this season with 300 passing yards and four passing passes, the most in a season in Alabama history. The Tide only had nine such games in the entire history of the program coming into this year. There are currently no lefty quarterbacks on an NFL roster. That's going to change soon, and this one is going to be around for awhile. We don't want to get ahead of ourselves, but it's hard to argue with the Steve Young comps.
Oct 20 - 7:22 PM

Cal redshirt senior RB Patrick Laird carried the ball 22 times for 193 yards with two touchdowns and caught three passes for 48 yards and a score in a 49-7 crushing of Oregon State on Saturday.

Let's get this out of the way: Oregon State? Not very good. Laird, however, is; and he had one of his best games in a Cal uniform on Saturday. He used his 6-foot, 205-pound frame to run over defenders at times, but it wasn't always necessary because the Golden Bears gave him big lanes to run through. He also showed he can be an effective receiver out of the backfield, and Cal should probably explore getting him the ball in that fashion more often. Laird will look to do this again next Saturday, but might have a tougher time against Washington.
Oct 20 - 7:19 PM

Clemson sophomore RB Travis Etienne rushed for 39 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries in Saturday's 41-7 win over No. 16 NC State.

If you didn't see the touchdown column, you'd think Etienne (5'10/200) had a bad game, but he scored three short touchdowns -- they were from three-, two-, and one-yards out -- which lowered his yards per carry mark. Etienne now has a three game streak with three rushing touchdowns, and he's scored in seven straight. That's cooking. He will bring his 14 rushing touchdowns into next Saturday's road matchup against Florida State.

Michigan State redshirt junior QB Brian Lewerke said that he's dealing with a shoulder injury.

Lewerke was as bad as bad could be against Michigan on Saturday, hitting on just 5-of-25 passes for 66 yards in the 21-7 loss while ultimately being replaced by Rocky Lombardi in the fourth quarter. After the defeat, the redshirt junior said that he had injured his shoulder against Penn State last weekend. This would explain why he failed to practice during the lead-up to the UM game. Spartans HC Mark Dantonio reaffirmed after Saturday's contest that Lewerke remains his starter, though his health will tell the tale as to whether or not he's able to give it a go against Purdue next weekend. Lombardi would start in that spot if Lewerke can't play.
Oct 20 - 6:52 PM

Memphis junior RB Darrell Henderson (undisclosed) is unlikely to return to Saturday's game against Missouri.

That's the official word from the Tigers. Henderson (5'9/200) was forced out of the game and into the locker room after sustaining an undisclosed injury in the first half. With Missouri up 48-20 on the scoreboard early in the third quarter, it looks like the team will take a precautionary approach to the electric junior. We'll pass along an update on Henderson's status moving forward as information becomes available.
Oct 20 - 6:28 PM

Vanderbilt redshirt junior RB Ke'Shawn Vaughn (undisclosed) will not play in Saturday's game at Kentucky due to injury.

Vaughn, who left Vanderbilt's October 13 loss to Florida due to an undisclosed injury, was expected to play but ultimately did not even travel with the team to Lexington. As a result of the redshirt junior's absence Khari Blasingame and Jamauri Wakefield, who have split time in the backfield with Vaughn, will be Vanderbilt's top options at running back Saturday night.
Oct 20 - 6:15 PM

FAU junior RB Devin Singletary rushed 16 times for just 39 yards in Saturday's 31-7 loss at Marshall and he was held out of the end zone for the first time in 19 games.

The last time Singletary failed to get into the end zone came in the opener on Sept. 1, 2017 against Navy, a span of 19 straight games. Motor has piled up 46 rushing scores and one more receiving touchdown over the past 20 contests, but the Thundering Herd certainly bottled him up tight in this one. Singletary and the Owls will look to get back on track on a short week against Louisiana Tech on Friday night in Boca Raton.
Oct 20 - 6:11 PM

Michigan junior RB Karan Higdon rushed for 139 yards on 32 carries in Saturday's 21-7 win over Michigan State.

Fantastic work once more from Higdon. He's been as solid as they come this season, with Saturday's output marking his sixth game over 100 yards rushing on the campaign. He's hit that number in every game since the opener against Notre Dame. For the year as a whole, now, the 5-foot-10, 202-pound junior has gone off for 826 yards and six touchdowns. Higdon and crew will be on bye next weekend, and will play Penn State on Nov. 3 coming out of the break.
Oct 20 - 5:12 PM

Temple redshirt sophomore QB Anthony Russo completed 20-of-41 passes for 237 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions in Saturday's 24-17 overtime win over No. 20 Cincinnati.

Russo (6'4/230) led the Owls on a seven-play, 75-yard touchdown drive with 49 seconds remaining to force overtime. In OT, Russo threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Wright, which was the final score of the game. It was a gutsy performance for the redshirt sophomore, but it certainly wasn't a clean game highlighted by the three interceptions. These growing pains are to be expected with an unexperienced quarterback, but Temple should be stoked to have a three game winning streak and to have a quarterback capable of moving the ball down the field. Russo will get a tough test against UCF on Thursday, November 1st.
Oct 20 - 5:11 PM

Tennessee redshirt sophomore QB Jarrett Guarantano was helped off the field after taking a big hit during the second quarter of Saturday's game against Alabama.

Guarantano struggled for much of his time on the field prior to the hit, which was to be expected given the quality of Alabama's defense. The redshirt sophomore, whose return has not been ruled out, was replaced in the lineup by graduate student Keller Chryst. Chryst, who previously played at Stanford, led Tennessee on a drive that was capped by the Volunteers' first touchdown on the game.
