Texas A&M four-star 2019 verbal QB commit Grant Gunnell has reopened his recruitment.

Gunnell (6'6/207) had been committed to the Aggies since June, but began to glance around at other potential options after the program parted ways with HC Kevin Sumlin following the close of the 2017 season. He indicated that while he's opening his recruitment back up, Texas A&M still remains in his mental hierarchy. As for what other schools are pushing for Gunnell, his decommitment came directly on the heels of Ohio State offering to him and he's also planning on taking an unofficial visit to LSU on Friday. Arkansas and TCU could additionally be in play, here. Gunnell ranks as the No. 49 overall prospect in the 2019 class on the 247Sports composite board, sliding in as the No. 2 pro-style quarterback for the cycle. His most immediately noticeable trait on the field is his accuracy. He's still developing his arm strength as he heads into his senior season at St. Pious X High School in Houston.

Louisville senior WR Jaylen Smith returned to practice.

Smith had an emergency appendectomy earlier this month but has made a recovery. Smith said he was "winded at first" but made a promise to be in game shape by next week. It sounds like he will be ready for the season opener. The 6-foot-4, 223-pound receiver finished with 980 yards and seven touchdowns last year. Smith will once again be a major focal point in Petrino's offense.

Mississippi junior WR A.J. Brown (hamstring) returned to practice.

Brown has been battling a hamstring injury for the better part of this camp, so it is great to see Brown back at practice. Widely considered the top NFL prospect for 2019, Brown (6'1/225) can play outside with his physicality, but was also productive from the slot -- he finished with 432 yards while lined up in the slot. Ole Miss and A.J. Brown open the season on the road against Texas Tech.

Clemson HC Dabo Swinney said that the team will likely release its Week 1 depth chart next Monday.

Swinney is still keeping mum on the Tigers' starting quarterback, but all will be revealed in a matter of days. If we're to read between the tea leaves, senior Kelly Bryant is probably going to be taking the opening snaps against Furman a week from Saturday. Stud QB recruit Trevor Lawrence has been fighting it out with the upperclassman in camp, with Swinney taking opportunity at almost every turn through the process to praise Bryant's improvements and grasp of the offense. This was the case in the spring, this was the case earlier this summer, this was the case earlier in camp and this was also the case on Thursday, with Swinney saying that Bryant's confidence is "night and day" from where it was at least season. We'd be surprised at this juncture if Swinney pulled a fast one on us and unveiled Lawrence as starter next week.

Georgia and Oregon agreed to take part in a Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game showdown on Sept. 3, 2022.

This contest will be played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Said Bulldogs HC Kirby Smart in a statement, "Opening the season in Atlanta against a Power Five opponent is a tremendous opportunity for our team and provides a great start to the season for our fans." Georgia and Oregon have squared off on the gridiron just once previously, with UGA putting together a 27-16 win over the Ducks back in 1977.

New Mexico State named junior QB Matt Romero starter for Saturday's game against Wyoming.

While redshirt senior Nick Jeanty has played on and off throughout his career with the Aggies, HC Doug Martin will instead be turning to JUCO transfer Romero to open the upcoming campaign. Given that Jeanty has struggled when given any sort of a significant amount of playing time, it's not a huge surprise that the 6-foot-2, 204-pound Romero was able to beat him out in camp. Saturday's contest will be aired on ESPN2, with New Mexico State pulling all the punches to fill out the stadium as best they can for this spotlight moment -- tickets are intentionally being sold for as low as $3 in an effort to put bodies in the seats for the cameras.

Iowa HC Kirk Ferentz said that sophomore RB Ivory Kelly-Martin will be the team's lead back.

Kelly-Martin (5'11/200) beat out redshirt sophomore Toren Young for the starting job. We've been pounding the drum for Iowa to open up their passing game, and this is the kind of move that would aid QB Nathan Stanley's cause. Young is a bruiser, while Kelly-Martin is more of a dancer and a threat to catch balls out of the backfield. He's very much in the mold of last year's starting running back, Akrum Wadley. We still expect Young to see plenty of work, especially in quarters close to the goal line. You'll have your first chance to check out Kelly-Martin and crew when Iowa takes on Northern Illinois in their opener on Sept. 1.

Memphis redshirt sophomore QB David Moore will transfer.

Moore (6'2/185) had been in competition with ASU grad transfer Brady White in camp, but was a no-show for Tuesday's practice and has since confirmed to the Memphis Commercial Appeal that he'll be moving on to fresh stomping grounds upcoming. The dual-threat signal-caller will have to sit out the 2018 season should he transfer to another FBS outfit. Boiling it all down, the immediate takeaway, here, is that with Moore moving on, White's now locked in as starter.

Lucas Sullivan of The Columbus Dispatch reports that two sources close to the situation suggest that investigators are likely to suggest a suspension for Ohio State HC Urban Meyer.

The school announced it will meet with Meyer on Wednesday to discuss his actions. Meyer has been on leave since reports from Brett McMurphy suggested that Meyer was aware of the allegations against former wide receiver coach Zach Smith of domestic violence. Sullivan also reports that the investigators will discuss their findings of their report on Monday, and that Meyer could be credited with "time served" since he is currently away from the team.
Aug 20 - 3:30 PM

Michigan junior QB Shea Patterson will be the starter against Notre Dame on September 1.

Michigan HC Jim Harbaugh claimed this was an open competition, but the reality was that it was extremely unlikely that anyone but Patterson was going to start the season opener as long as he was eligible. He is, so he will be. The former Ole Miss quarterback gives Harbaugh his most talented quarterback on the college side since he coached Andrew Luck at Stanford, and a big year could put him in first-round consideration for the 2018 season.
Aug 20 - 2:23 PM

Texas HC Tom Herman told reporters that sophomore QB Sam Ehlinger took the majority of first-team snaps on Monday, and is likely to start the season opener against Maryland.

Herman told reporters that Ehlinger will be under center "unless something catastrophic happens." Well, then. The sophomore signal-caller was in a battle with Shane Buechele to be the starter for the Longhorns, and while this doesn't rule out Buechele playing at some point this year, it appears Ehlinger has earned the first crack at the starting job. Texas takes on the Terrapins on September 1.

Alabama ranks first in the first AP top 25 poll released on Monday.

The Crimson Tide received 42 of 61 first-place votes, and rank at the top of the AP top 25 for the third consecutive year. Clemson received 18 votes and rank second. The other first place vote went to Wisconsin, who come in fourth behind Georgia in the third spot. Ohio State, Washington, Oklahoma, Miami and Auburn round out the top 10. UCF is the highest ranking school not in a Power Five conference at 21st, a spot ahead of Boise State.
