Ohio State HC Urban Meyer said that redshirt sophomore QB Dwayne Haskins will "get the first opportunity to be the starter."

This shouldn't come as a huge surprise after Haskins' main competition, Joe Burrow, decided to transfer out last week. Speaking at the Hall of Fame Luncheon Club on Monday, Meyer reminisced about the impressive spot performance Haskins delivered against Michigan after J.T. Barrett was forced out with a knee injury in the most recent incarnation of The Game. The 6-foot-2, 188-pound redshirt sophomore connected on 6-of-7 passes for 94 yards while rushing for 24 yards in that emergency showing. Espousing Haskins' virtues on Monday, Meyer said that he possesses a "great release" to pair with "good size" and respectable mobility. Assuming all goes off without a hitch in August camp, our first opportunity to see Haskins start will come when the Buckeyes open against Oregon State on Sept. 1 a few months down the road.

Stanford senior RB Bryce Love (undisclosed) is expected to play in Saturday's game against Oregon.

Love (5'10/202) sat against UC Davis over the weekend, but by all accounts that was just a precautionary measure. Barring any sort of late setback, look for the senior standout to be back in action against the Ducks come Saturday. When last we saw Love, he was gouging USC for 136 yards rushing and a touchdown in an easy Week 2 victory. Cameron Scarlett would fill in for him if the Cardinal opt to play it safe at the last minute come the weekend.

Nebraska freshman QB Adrian Martinez (knee) took part in practice on Tuesday.

Martinez (6'2/220) will be a game-time decision for this coming weekend's road showdown with Michigan. He continues to work his way back from the knee injury he sustained against Colorado to start the season, with that injury preventing him from playing in this past weekend's loss to Troy. Should Martinez's health prevent him from playing against the Wolverines, it would be former walk-on Andrew Bunch who receives the starting call once more.

Miami junior WR Ahmmon Richards (knee) did not practice on Tuesday.

Richards (6'1/190) is being considered a day-to-day proposition. He has not played in either of the last two games due to the knee injury he sustained against LSU in the opener. Miami is keeping optimistic about his availability for Saturday's game against FIU, though, and did list him as starting X-receiver on the Week 4 depth chart, a glimmer of hope for the talented-but-injury-cursed wideout. We should have a more clear idea as to Richards' availability for the weekend as the practice week progresses.

USC redshirt freshman S Isaiah Pola-Mao will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery.

"The shoulder surgery that he has is a significant one to hold the shoulder in place," said HC Clay Helton. Pola-Mao (6'3/190) also underwent surgery on this same shoulder last fall, always a concerning sign. His most recent procedure -- he dislocated his shoulder against Stanford in Week 2 -- is expected to require six months of rehabilitation. Pola-Mao initially signed on with USC as a four-star recruit in the 2017 class. He made his first career start in this year's opener, against UNLV. Pola-Mao's sidelining leaves USC uncomfortably thin at safety outside of Marvell Tell. Among those who could help fill in, C.J. Pollard, Talanoa Hufanga and Chase Williams (shifted from corner to safety last week).

Kansas HC David Beaty said that redshirt senior DT Daniel Wise (undisclosed) is expected to play against Baylor on Saturday.

Wise (6'3/290) sat out the second half of Saturday's win over Rutgers due to a minor injury concern, but Beaty explained to reporters on Tuesday that this was just a precautionary move on the team's part. Wise will practice on Tuesday and Wednesday, Beaty said. A first-team All-Big 12 performer for the 2017 season, Wise is a potential Day 2 selection for the spring draft.

Miami junior WR Ahmmon Richards (knee) is listed as the starting X-receiver on the depth chart for Saturday's tilt with FIU.

This tentatively suggests that Richards will be returning on Saturday after he missed the last two games with a knee injury suffered in the opener against LSU. Of course, the Hurricanes won't rush him back for FIU, so even a minor setback this week could compromise his status. We'll keep you updated as we go.

Central Michigan HC John Bonamego named senior QB Tommy Lazzaro the starter.

Lazzaro will be behind center Saturday against Maine as Tony Poljan gets the hook. The final straw came on Saturday against NIU, when Poljan was benched in the third quarter with a 2.9 quarterback rating and Lazzaro came on to rally the offense and post a 80.4 QBR. Lazzaro is an unknown quantity. A JUCO transfer a few years back, he was way down the depth chart behind Cooper Rush in 2016 and Shane Morris in 2017. But with Poljan struggling through the first three games of 2018, he's going to get his shot.

Central Michigan HC John Bonamego benched redshirt sophomore QB Tony Poljan.

Tommy Lazzaro takes over at quarterback. Poljan is huge (6'7/235) and a plus athlete, but he just isn't there as a passer. The numbers, brutal, tell the story: He's completed 57.1% of his passes for 344 yards, 4.9 YPA and a 1/4 TD/INT rate through three games. While Poljan isn't ready to be a starting FBS quarterback, he may just help CMU this year yet. Last season, Poljan played a little wide receiver as a freshman. He saw some action there in practice on Tuesday as well.

Southern Miss HC Jay Hopson and OC Shannon Dawson both said redshirt junior QB Jack Abraham will remain the starter this week against Rice.

It appears as though USM will give Abraham an opportunity to keep the job even with Kwadra Griggs reinstated from suspension. Hopson and Dawson both said that Griggs will be given an opportunity to compete for the job. We'd imagine that the job is Abraham's until/unless he struggles. His leash probably won't be very long in the short-term. Through two games, Abraham's passer rating of 164.2 is No. 1 in Conference USA and his 310 passing yards per game rank No. 14 in the nation.

Nebraska freshman QB Adrian Martinez (knee) will be a game-time decision for their game against Michigan on Saturday.

"We’re going to make a decision on what’s best for the team and what’s best for him," Frost told reporters. "It was close (to him playing) last week, but he wasn’t ready, and we didn’t want to put him in that situation." Martinez missed the game against Troy last week, despite the fact that he was announced as the starter. In his place, Andrew Bunch played okay, but the Cornhuskers fell to Troy. The freshman signal-caller offers much more upside with his arm and legs, so if he can play, it gives them a better chance of pulling off the upset against the Wolverines. We should have more updates on his status later in the week.
Sep 17 - 9:07 PM

Florida State redshirt freshman RB Khalan Laborn underwent season-ending surgery on his knee.

There were reports last week that Laborn was not expected to miss the rest of the season. Those reports were false, as there was more damage to his kneecap than originally diagnosed. He suffered the injury in the week two victory over Samford. The former four-star tailback showed upside in his limited time with the Seminoles, and should be ready to compete before the start of next season.
