Southern Miss has reinstated redshirt senior QB Kwadra Griggs from his indefinite suspension.

Griggs (6'3/225) was hit with an indefinite suspension on Aug. 11 in relation to a "student conduct matter." Now that he's been reinstated, Southern Miss will have a decision to make. Griggs was a seven-game starter a year ago, but in his absence, JUCO transfer Jack Abraham has come out firing to open the campaign, throwing for 620 yards (71.2-percent completions) with a 6/2 TD/INT ratio in just two games. Our hunch is that Abraham receives at least one more start -- he has earned the benefit of the doubt with his early play -- but in the short term, anyway, this will be up in the air. Southern Miss is off on bye this weekend, so they have another week of practice to determine a definitive direction at quarterback before they play their next game, against Rice on Sept. 22.

North Carolina junior QB Nathan Elliott will start on Thursday against Miami.

Not a big surprise, but worth nothing. Elliott was excellent on Saturday, completing 22-of-31 passes for 314 yards with two scores in the victory over Pitt. They'll need another strong effort from the 6-foot-1, 215-pound junior if they have any chance of upsetting the Hurricanes for the second year in a row.

Ohio State junior DE Nick Bosa (abdomen) will not play until November according to his father, John Bosa.

Bosa was ruled out for Penn State on Saturday with the injury, but it sounds like we're not going to be seeing the All-American back on the field for several more weeks. "Nick had major surgery," Bosa told Ari Wasserman of The Athletic. "Now, he had surgery with the best surgeon for the core on the planet (Dr. William C. Meyers in Philadelphia) and it’s 100 percent fixable, which is the beauty of it, but he’s not even getting reevaluated until November." Ohio State's loaded with quality players on the defensive line, but this is a substantial loss for the Buckeyes, as he's one of the very best players in college football. We'll also have to see how this changes his draft stock, with many believing the defender is the favorite to be the first pick in next year's draft.

Oregon HC Mario Cristobal confirmed that senior RB Taj Griffin intends to transfer.

This is going to be a common theme this week with the new redshirt/transfer rules. Griffin (5'11/178) has fallen out of the running back rotation, and since he didn't play in four games, he can transfer with a year of eligibility left. CJ Verdell, Tony Brooks-James and Darrian Felix will continue to split carries for the Ducks, with Verdell looking like he'll get the bulk of the carries going forward.
Sep 24 - 2:47 PM

Oklahoma State senior WR Jalen McCleskey will sit out the rest of the season and transfer at the end of the season.

Cowboys HC Mike Gundy told reporters that McCleskey (5'10/170) feels like he isn't getting the ball enough. Because he didn't play in four games, the wideout is able to transfer with eligibility left, and assuming he leaves with his degree, he won't have to sit out a year. After catching 73 passes as a sophomore, McCleskey has seen his roll regress, and Tylan Wallace has become the go-to passing option in the offense. This should lead to more targets for Dillon Stoner and Tyron Johnson going forward.

Tennessee HC Jeremy Pruitt says that he and junior LB Quart'e Sapp met Sunday and buried the hatchet over the he-said, he-said situation that unfolded Saturday.

During the Vols' 47-21 loss to Florida on Saturday, Sapp left the sideline. After the game, Pruitt told reporters that Sapp refused to enter the game and was sent to the locker room. Sapp denied Pruitt's allegation on Sunday. "I never was asked nor did I ever refuse to go into the game," Sapp wrote on Twitter. "There was a sideline confrontation (I'm sure will be resolved internally) that occurred and the other party involved had to be restrained." It's unclear who he's referring to. Either way, Sapp remains with the team and is listed as a second-string linebacker on the depth chart. Tennessee travels to Georgia on Saturday.

Louisville HC Bobby Petrino lists redshirt freshman QB Malik Cunningham and sophomore QB Juwan "Puma" Pass as co-starters for Saturday's game against Florida State.

Cunningham and Pass both played against Virginia, and they both were ineffective in the blowout loss to the Cavaliers last Saturday. Pass was the more effective thrower, but Cunningham is the more dynamic player with the ability to make plays with his legs and feet. Don't be surprised if Pass gets the start, but it's very likely we're going to see both quarterbacks play on Saturday against the Seminoles.

Buffalo redshirt senior WR Anthony Johnson says he'll be fine after he did not play in the second half of Saturday's game against Rutgers following a tweaked hamstring.

"Thank you, I’m good," he tweeted to a fan who wrote "Hope your hamstrings doing better." Johnson caught two passes for 101 yards and a touchdown in the first half of the 42-13 demolition of Rutgers before he hit the showers. We'll update you on his status later this week ahead of Saturday's crucial tilt with Army. Johnson is one of the five-best NFL receiving prospects in the nation.

Virginia Tech redshirt sophomore QB Josh Jackson will undergo surgery on Tuesday to repair a broken left fibula.

He suffered the injury in Saturday's devastating 49-35 loss to Old Dominion. At the time he went down early in the fourth quarter, the game was tied 28-28. Per HC Justin Fuente, Jackson could return "maybe at the end of the year, maybe not," which sounds a bit ominous. Ryan Willis will get the first opportunity to replace him. Also keep an eye out for redshirt freshman Hendon Hooker, who could take over if Willis struggles.

Northwestern sophomore RB Jeremy Larkin retired from football due to a diagnosis of cervical stenosis.

The condition is not life threatening, per Northwestern's news release, but it prevents participation in football. Cervical stenosis refers to when the protective spinal canal narrows due to degenerative changes or trauma. This type of spinal cord compression can lead to major health issues, so good for Larkin for abruptly walking away. That doesn't mean this news isn't profoundly sad. A four-star prospect, the multi-faceted Larkin had already piled up 346 rushing yards, 19 catches for 127 yards, and five total touchdowns in three games this year after taking over Justin Jackson's old post. Larkin's backup, John Moten IV, is likely to ascend to starting duties.

Notre Dame junior RB Dexter Williams is expected to return from suspension this week against Stanford.

Williams sat out the team's first four games with an undisclosed suspension. HC Brian Kelly, who was closed-lipped about the suspension previously, said Sunday that Williams will return Saturday barring a slip-up this week. Williams will enter a compelling running back committee that already features Tony Jones Jr. and Jafar Armstrong. On 39 carries last year, Williams averaged 9.2 yards per carry, with 17 going for a first down. He's posted 641 career rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 99 carries.

Southern Miss senior RB George Payne retired with a career-ending injury.

Payne missed the entirety of the 2015 and 2017 seasons with various injuries, and he'd not appeared in any games this year either. He rushed for a career 940 yards and nine touchdowns in three seasons. This leaves Southern Miss thin at running back. Fellow senior running back T'Rod Daniels announced his intent to transfer last week. Behind Tez Parks, the Golden Eagles will continue to rely heavily on Steven Anderson and Trivenskey Mosley.
