Northern Illinois sophomore RB Tre Harbison rushed for 139 yards on 21 carries in Wednesday's 38-15 win over Toledo.

Harbison (5'11/227) was unable to hit the end zone on Wednesday night -- Marcus Jones and Marcus Childers combined to score thrice on the ground -- but led the Huskies with his 139 rushing yards. He was steady and consistent when given the ball, averaging 6.6 YPC with a long run of 33 yards. After going over a month without a 100-yard game, Harbison has now hit that mark in each of his last two contests. He was actually even better last time out, rushing for 169 yards and a touchdown against Akron on Nov. 1. NIU will take on Miami (OH) and Western Michigan to close out the regular season.

Miami sophomore WR Jeff Thomas missed Wednesday's practice "due to personal reasons," but the Hurricanes say Thomas remains with the team.

Thomas' absence will only further stoke the rumor mill. Earlier Wednesday, Canesport.com reported that Thomas was no longer a member of the team. Thomas has reportedly clashed with WR coach Ron Dugans in recent days. He apparently stormed out following Tuesday’s practice and did not attend meetings later in the day. At that point, Thomas scrubbed all references to Miami off his social media accounts. The 5-foot-10, 175-pound sophomore has reportedly talked about the possibility of transferring to Illinois. All this may stem from Thomas getting benched for the first few series against Virginia Tech for an off-field concern. If Thomas transfers, he'll have to sit out a season due to NCAA rules. Stay tuned.

Alabama senior RB Damien Harris (head) has cleared concussion protocol.

Alabama HC Nick Saban told the media Wednesday that he expects Harris to play against Auburn on Saturday. "He cleared, and he practiced yesterday," Saban said. "So, we hope, without setback, he’ll be OK." Harris suffered a "mild concussion" in The Citadel game. Harris won't have to shoulder a huge workload against the Tigers with Najee Harris and Joshua Jacobs around to spell him.

Miami (OH) redshirt senior RB Alonzo Smith ran for 207 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries in a 42-21 blowout victory over Ball State on Tuesday.

Smith and the RedHawks ran all over the Ball State defense to the tun of 368 yards in the rout. The three scores give the senior multiple touchdowns in three-of-four games, and he has found the end zone nine times on the season. This was the sixth with of the season for Miami (OH), so they're now eligible for a bowl game. If Buffalo loses this weekend, there's also a slim chance that they could play in the conference championship game.

LSU redshirt sophomore TE Thaddeus Moss underwent foot surgery.

Moss (6'3/240) had already been ruled out for the remainder of the season by mid-October. He did not end up playing in a game prior to his being nixed for the campaign. The redshirt sophomore has now required two surgeries on the same foot over the last calendar year. There has been no indication that Moss might be able to make it back for LSU's bowl game. Looking like an offseason of rehab.

In Tuesday's release of the College Football Playoff rankings, Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame and Michigan were ranked Nos. 1-4.

No change once more in the top four, but we did see some interesting movement further down in the rankings. While Ohio State remains at No. 10, same as a week ago, UCF has jumped them, moving up from No. 11 to No. 9 on the strength of their dominating win over Cincinnati -- coupled with OSU's near-loss to Maryland -- on Saturday. Filling out the remainder of the top-10 rankings, Georgia, Oklahoma, LSU and Washington State slot in at Nos. 5-8.

Football Scoop reports that should Purdue HC Jeff Brohm leave for another job, the program has already come up with a short list of replacement candidates.

Brohm is viewed by many as the top option to take over the vacant head-coaching position at Louisville. Should he leave, Troy's Neal Brown, Alabama's Butch Jones, Louisiana Tech's Skip Holtz, Clemson's Tony Elliott, Maryland's Matt Canada and Memphis' Mike Norvell are all reportedly being bandied about as possibilities to replace him. The name that sticks out like a sore thumb, here, would be Butch Jones, who has been working as an analyst at Alabama after being canned by Tennessee last autumn.

Texas Tech redshirt sophomore QB Jett Duffey (knee) should be considered questionable for Saturday's game against Baylor.

Duffey ceded the field to McLane Carter late in Saturday's loss to Kansas State. Said HC Kliff Kingsbury, "The knee's banged up and then he's had some other issues that occurred during the game." Just how the quarterbacking situation will shake out, here, is up in the air. While Duffey is now dinged up, Carter has returned from a slow-to-heal ankle injury. On top of that, Kingsbury said last week that Alan Bowman (lung) could potentially play against the Bears. We will have a better idea as to who will be taking the opening snaps in Saturday's game as the practice week progresses.

Trojan Insider's Peter Ghersen reports that USC will retain HC Clay Helton for the 2019 season.

Wow. If this turns out to be the case, it would be a major reversal on the general public expectation regarding Helton's fate at the end of the season. At least publicly, Helton has insisted down the stretch that he has support from the administration, even as the Trojans' season has begun to fall apart. 247Sports' Ryan Abraham backs up Ghersen's report in general feeling, writing that "[m]ost of the sources we talk to inside the program or working very closely with the program feel that Clay Helton is coming back." USC is currently sitting at 5-6 on the year and will need to beat Notre Dame on Saturday -- good luck -- in order to reach bowl eligibility. We've been exceedingly underwhelmed by Helton's methods throughout his time with the program and think they would be better off taking a new approach.

Penn State HC James Franklin sidestepped speculation that he could be a candidate for the job at USC should it open up, saying, "I don’t even think it’s fair or right to be talking about that with everything I understand about it."

Franklin said several times that 100% of his focus is on prepping Penn State for its game against Maryland this coming weekend, though he failed to outright refute the USC talk. At this juncture, Clay Helton remains head coach for the Trojans, though that may well change after they finish out the regular season against Notre Dame on Saturday. Penn State is in the midst of closing out a disappointing campaign in which they failed to make good on preseason expectations as a potential Playoff contender. Stay tuned.

The Athletic's Bruce Feldman reports that UMass is expected to part ways with HC Mark Whipple.

Feldman does not offer word as to when Whipple will officially be cut loose by the Minutemen, but it would appear to be in the cards for the coming days. UMass wrapped up a 4-8 season against Georgia on Saturday, losing that date with the Bulldogs by a 66-27 score. In his five seasons in this most recent stint with the program, Whipple has amassed a 16-44 record while failing to ever win more than four games in a season.
Nov 20 - 2:36 PM

NJ.com's Keith Sargeant reports that "barring an unforeseen event in the next five days," Rutgers HC Chris Ash will be back for the 2019 season.

Sargeant cites two sources close to the decision-making process. One university official told him that so long as nothing goes sideways in the near future, "there's no way Ash isn't coming back." Rutgers AD Pat Hobbs has shown consistent support for his head coach, going so far as to respond to a summer hot seat column by CBS Sports' Dennis Dodd with a tweet telling Dodd to remove Ash from the list. Rutgers sits at just 1-10 this season, and Ash at 7-28 for his three-year career with the program. The Scarlet Knights will close out the season against Michigan State on Saturday.
