Uncommitted four-star 2019 ATH Quavaris Crouch will make his commitment at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Jan. 5.

Or should we say, Crouch will make his commitment public on Jan. 5. His actual decision will come a few weeks earlier, as the four-star stud has plans to make a "silent" commitment prior to the early signing period later this month. As for the contenders in this race, Michigan HC Jim Harbaugh paid him an in-home visit on Monday and Clemson HC Dabo Swinney will likewise be checking in with him on Saturday. These are believed to be the two finalists for his pledge (with Alabama and FSU also having outside shots). While Crouch could play a number of positions once he hits his preferred campus, he told the Washington Post just prior to Thanksgiving that he would be playing linebacker at the collegiate level. On the 247Sports composite board, Crouch ranks as the No. 39 overall prospect in the 2019 class. He had been drawing five-star status earlier in the fall, but has slid a little in recent rankings releases.

Miami promoted OLB coach Jonathan Patke and S coach Eprhraim Banda to co-defensive coordinators.

Well that was fast. The Hurricanes almost immediately filled the vacancy left behind when outgoing DC Manny Diaz accepted the head-coaching position with Temple on Thursday. Rather than conduct a massive search, HC Mark Richt instead opted to cover for Diaz's departure with a pair of in-house promotions. Given that Miami is in the thick of December recruiting, this kind of move to preserve continuity on what's almost certainly going to be a strong defensive team next season (even sans Diaz) is one that we can respect.

Multiple outlets are reporting that Utah State will hire former Western Kentucky HC Mike Sanford to serve as offensive coordinator.

Stanford was fired by the Hilltoppers following a lost 2018 campaign in which his team finished with a 3-9 record. He hasn't had to wait long to land on his feet, though, now set to come over to HC Gary Andersen's new Aggies staff. Sanford has had success as an offensive coordinator in the past -- he previously put in stints with Boise State and Notre Dame -- and makes for a serviceable enough hire despite his inabilities to handle head-coaching duties at WKU.

North Texas junior WR Rico Bussey (hamstring) is questionable for Saturday's New Mexico Bowl date with Utah State.

Mean Green HC Seth Littrell said that Bussey would likely be a game-time decision for Saturday's bowl. It appears he's still dealing with the hamstring issue which he sustained against UTSA in the regular-season finale. Should the 6-foot-2, 190-pound junior be unable to take the field against Utah State upcoming, that would represent a tangible blow to the UNT offense. During the regular season, Bussey caught 68 passes for 1,017 yards and 12 touchdowns.

North Dakota State promoted DC Matt Entz to head coach.

Entz receives the promotion with Chris Klieman accepting the job at Kansas State earlier this week. While he is a first-time head coach, his past five years with NDSU -- one of the winningest programs in the NCAA -- figure to have helped to ready him for the next step. If you'll recall, Klieman, himself, was given the head-coaching job with the Bison after Craig Bohl left to take the gig at Wyoming several years back. This is a program which is more than well enough equipped to weather the loss of a head coach.

Michigan State junior CB Justin Layne declared for the 2019 NFL Draft.

Layne (6'3/185) logged a career-best 72 tackles to go with an interception and 15 passes defended while starting 12 games during the 2018 regular season. This strong body of work earned him second-team all-conference honors from both the coaches and the media. He has serviceable speed, size and a nose for the ball, but will need to test well to cement a potential Day 2 selection. Layne is unlikely to play in the Red Box Bowl against Oregon on Dec. 31, though his status there has not been officially announced.

FIU junior RB Shawndarrius Phillips was arrested on an outstanding warrant on Wednesday.

A little bit to unpack, here. Phillips was arrested on Wednesday for suspicion of domestic battery by strangulation relating to an alleged confrontation with his girlfriend on June 17, with his arrest warrant issued on Aug. 24 -- before FIU had even kicked off their season. That warrant was outstanding up until the arrest was finally made this week, despite the fact that Phillips was easily, easily locatable. He appeared in 11 games during the regular season while making five starts. Even now, the team is not commenting on the case (specifically we're wondering whether or not they were aware of the situation prior to Wednesday), with the junior still listed on the team's online roster. Just a strange case on the whole in the way that it was mishandled by, apparently, everybody. Again, the warrant was issued on Aug. 24.

The Athletic's Bruce Feldman reports that Akron will hire Chattanooga HC Tom Arth to serve in the same capacity.

Akron a little behind the eight ball in finding their next head coach relative to other teams in similar situations, but looks like they've got their man, now. Arth has spent the last two seasons heading up Chattanooga's program and earlier served as head coach at John Carroll (D-III) from 2013-16. Arth owns a respectable 49-21 record for his head-coaching career, though it should be noted that he went just 9-13 at Chattanooga.

UCLA redshirt sophomore QB Devon Modster transferred to Cal.

Modster (6'1/250) announced his transfer intent in late September. He did not take a snap during the 2018 season. The redshirt sophomore signal-caller had a spot cameo near the end of the 2017 campaign, when he saw playing time due to Josh Rosen injury concern. In five games for that season as a whole, he threw for 671 yards with a 4/0 TD/INT ratio. Crucially, Modster spent the autumn in the JUCO ranks (though not as a football player) following his transfer declaration and is expected to be eligible to play immediately with Cal in 2019. The Golden Bears are almost certainly going to be having an open competition at quarterback this offseason and we could see Modster starting next season if he can show out strong with his new crew. He will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Alabama sophomore QB Tua Tagovailoa (ankle) was able to throw during Friday's practice.

Tagovailoa (6'1/218) underwent a minor surgical procedure on his ankle following the SEC Championship Game. He was initially expected to be working on a two-week recovery timeline and it looks like he was able to stay on track with that. The sophomore star has until Dec. 29 to get back to full strength as best he can before Alabama embarks on its Playoff run in a semifinal showdown with Oklahoma.
Dec 14 - 5:34 PM

Kentucky junior RB Benny Snell will play in the team's Citrus Bowl matchup with Penn State on Jan. 1.

Snell (5'11/223) declared for the draft earlier on Friday, but while many draft declarations come with a subsequent bowl skippage, that won't be the case with the junior standout. A potential Day 2 prospect for the spring, Snell is currently just four yards shy of setting a new season-best mark for rushing yardage. He's currently sitting on 1,330 yards and 14 touchdowns for the campaign.
Dec 14 - 5:19 PM

Wake Forest redshirt sophomore WR Greg Dortch (finger) has not been practicing in advance of the team's Birmingham Bowl date with Memphis.

Dortch (5'9/217) injured his finger in a blowout win over Duke to close out the regular season. The Winston-Salem Journal's Conor O'Neill passes along that the injury was "more serious than initially thought." While the redshirt sophomore does have a few more days in which to get right -- the Birmingham Bowl will kick off on Saturday, Dec. 22 -- he should be considered questionable to play upcoming. It would be a major loss if he can't play in the contest, as Dortch is as reliable as they come. For the 2018 regular season he posted an 89-1078-8 receiving line.
